    DELE-BASHIRU OFFERED WATFORD DEAL

Watford have offered a contract to ex-Manchester City youngster Tom Dele-Bashiru.

The 19-year-old rejected the offer of a new deal at City so the club would be due compensation – believed to be £220,000.

The midfielder has also had offers from clubs abroad including Hungarian side Mol Fehervar.

6 year deal. Wow. Could be a great move if it comes off. Different kind of transaction than most of the young guys picked up on frees recently !

One year for every goal conceded at Wemberley. Revenge is sweet. They won't mess with us like that again.

6 year deal. I’m excited to see how he does on his season long loan at Rochdale in 2 years whilst still having 4 years left on his deal...

In all seriousness, Man City’s academy is one of the more highly-though of and obviously not many Manley the step to the 1st team at that level so the kids must be different. I’m a fan of this signing if it means that Wilmot is considered as a CB option again.

Ok after 2 mins research he is a Doucs replacement ,which would release funds for Sarr and possibly one other if lukebakio leaves.

Can't be immediate though surely ? 6 year deal says we absolutely believe in him but it would be a hell of a risk to assume he's going to immeduiately be a regular ?

The key thing is 6 year deal for an unproven youngster. They must really believe in him. Any indication whether MC wanted to extend his deal or just released him ?

interesting signing and completely out of nowhere.

definitely one for the future, but might make a couple of appearances like quina last year.

I believe I read somewhere that man city wanted to extend the contract, hence we are paying compensation.

Joking aside, this totally vindicates our decision to pull out of the old youth system.

We will have invested a shed load in Jadon Sancho a few years ago* only to see him leave for City the moment he looked like a prospect and therefore missed out on seeing him in a yellow shirt as well as all the £££ when he inevitably moved onto a higher level. Aside from some misty eyed notion of contributing to the development of local talent, we got the bum-end of that model.

By contrast, we can now invest the money we would have ploughed into those academy kids in buying a handful of graduates such as this lad (and Domingos Quina) who are so much further along with their development and therefore represent much less of a gamble but aren't getting the opportunities at City. If only we'd done this with Sancho...

*not to mention the cost of developing the many contemporaries of his who weren't good enough to make the grade but who you have to develop on the basis that 1 in 100 will make it

He impressed me during the 1 Nigeria game I watched at the U20 WC - loves to take players on, can pick a pass and is a good physical presence in the middle - he reminds me of a cross between Doucoure (a similar box to box player in the way he surges up the pitch) and Quina (the close control, clever passes and ability on the ball)

Exactly, I posted in another thread that I think we're personally gearing up to potentially close the academy. This was touted last year (https://www.hertfordshiremercury.co.uk/sport/watford-overhaul-academy-structure-create-1141683) and our youth team signings certainly seem to be suggesting that could be the case soon - why spend years developing youngsters for them to get poached by one of the big clubs for practically nothing when instead you pick at their scraps (again for practically nothing) when they're much more likely to be closer to the "finished product". It's a low risk, high gain strategy that's worked well for Brentford since closing their academy.

May be good got us, but extrapolated it seems bad for football and for the players who fall between being good enough for high level football and being released down the chain.

Eventually they may settle at the right level, but the sorting will take longer as big clubs hoard young talent on big wages, few of whom will ever be good enough, but who are too expensive to move down a level or two, where they should.

Wearing my Big Society hat I couldn’t agree more. But wearing my Watford supporting hat I see no reason why we should continue to fund the development of players for the Man Citys of this world to plunder for peanuts.

The rules need to be changed so that smaller clubs get a proper fee for youth prospects who get poached. And by proper fee I mean a fee not just to reflect the value/cost of the player bought but which reflects the fact that an academy needs to be run for many years (and many 100s of players need to pass through it) before a Jadon Sancho is developed.

Just proves what an absolute farce EPPP is when a now-established Premier League club like us doesn't see a point in running an academy when we can just hoover up dissatisfied talented youngsters originally poached by the big boys.

An absolutely terrible state of affairs for grass roots/lower league football.

It's never been worth running a proper academy because of the compensation rules. It's all so heavily weighted towards the bigger clubs, that it's just not financially viable to run one. Ok, it's good for soundbites when you can say you're doing your bit for English football by bringing in the kids, but in reality, all it does is produce players for the lower leagues, who cannot afford to buy these players so you end up releasing them for free.

The other side, when you get a good one like Sancho, they just get cherry-picked for a pittance. Is it really worth investing the millions it takes to run an academy just for the occasional player who may be at a EPL level but not attractive enough for the big boys to go after?

The higher up the football pyramid a club like Watford go, the less likely they will be able to create players good enough to play in the Watford first team. That's the sad fact of it, no matter how idealistic a good academy sounds, it just doesn't work for a club like Watford.

Can't wait for the compensation payment to be set way above what we got for Sancho.

Also, massive news that we beat Hungarian side Mol Fehevar to his signature.

Two completely different sports, but you can draw parallels between the NFL and the youth system here.

It’s a complete farce that the current system is so heavily weighted towards the big boys. The draft system in the NFL does the exact opposite and favours the worst teams, with the college kids being the equivalent of academy players in this analogy.

It’s pretty shameful that we let the already big, rich and successful clubs plunder the smaller clubs for their best young players, when other sports see it as an opportunity to level the playing field.

The real joke is the lack of protest against the EPPP when it was introduced. The result was inevitable. I still think Gareth Southgate's a **** for supporting the idea!
