Christ, that Bournemouth badge really is terrible... Here hoping we don't implement a Hornet with an afro into our new badge
Hi again, I've created a few more variations on my original logo, any comments and feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks!
If you did number 6, but with there remaining a narrow gap at the bottom between the abdomen and the shield, so there is a gap all the way around the badge as per the Cagliari badge, then that might get my vote. The '1881' bit might need to be removed though, as it already is pretty tough to make out. Either that, or number 3, which I'm also def a fan of. Good work.
Actually I like most of these too. Isnt the word Watford odd? Say it over and over until it loses its meaning, seems odd
Found the flaw in the plan though. Looks like 3 pairs of thongs and associated bum cracks on top of each other. "Three builders bumcracks on our shirt, FA cup final flag waving trophy still gleaming, 140 years of hurt, never stopped us booing"
Like it. Perhaps double-check maybe that the proportions on the outside are correct vs other similar badges (eg Muff, Calgiari, Parma); in particular whether the outside is wide enough. It currently appears maybe a smidgen narrow. Also, another idea for a twist/expansion on it - also have the top of the badge slightly curved (perhaps the top of the text might need to be subsequently curved as well to match, perhaps not) - other badges that follow a similar shape eg the Muff and Calgiari badges seem to do this. After that, with the curved top it might also be worth checking whether the ball from badge 3 then works at the top or not. A final idea for a variation on this badge, once the other variations above have been already looked at, would be: make the outer part of the badge 50/50 split red on the left-hand side, yellow on the right (like on the current badge but swapping black for red); then swap the text colour for black.
With you until the 50/50 split. Its the thing I hate most about our badge That and the gormless moose and the general shape and all the colours used
When is the closing date? Are multiple entries allowed? If so, submit them all, let the people decide with a people’s vote. We demand democracy, what do we want ?.... when do we want it? .... oh sorry, wrong thread.
The deadlines the 17th July, I can submit up to 10 designs if I want so I'll probably put forward a few different options. I expect they'll receive at least a few hundred submissions though so it's going to be difficult to stand out.
My first impressions of your designs are they aren't a Hornet. While in the main you have a clean design, I presume the change is to align the badge with the nickname 'The Hornets', a recognisable link which I don't believe you have at the moment.
Can I ask what it is you see instead? My design is meant to be an abstract take on a hornet, so it's always going to be less instantly identifiable than a more literal interpretation featuring a fully illustrated hornet. That's something that I can be sure 100 other submissions will feature, so I looked for an alternative route to stand out.
Hmm, the 50-50 split doesn't seem to work in the end. I prefer it with that curve to the straight top though - so my picks would be either that one on the left, or badge number 3.
I think it's recognisable enough. The benefit of Barney's design is also that it actually still looks pretty good - as demonstrated by many of the suggestions on here, and my own observations, a whole hornet seems to be one of the most difficult animals to depict in a fairly stylish way for the purposes of something like a football badge, so reducing it to the most recognisable and easy to depict element makes sense. Maybe he could try adding some wings sticking out the sides if you want it to be more obvious? That could just be silly though.
I see a design using a repeated pattern with no discernible meaning. It's only because I know Watford have The Hornets as a nickname that I'm able to see the link but for new or as yet unfound 'customers' I don't think it's obvious enough. For me branding needs to be immediate, art is more suited to the slow burn. If you had 'The Hornets' where you have 'Watford' then it could possibly link together better? Maybe a much smaller sized 'The' sitting on the crossbar of the 'H' or wherever and have Watford (possibly even Watford Football Club) on a banner/ribbon type thing beneath the whole badge similar to the Hertfordshire crest. A quick google image search of 'Hornet logo' showed me the image below, a very stylish and modern design. Personally, I think the club would go for something like that - with wording - over a more abstract version.
Here is a hornet badge that doesn't look completely ineffectual or cartoonish (it's the bonnet emblem from a 1972 AMC Hornet)
