Mind you it doesnt really answer your question about the differences in standards of football pitches. That i will answer.. eventually.

The main variable with cricket pitches is the pace or bounce.

Is that a consideration with football pitches or do you just use the soil you have?

    Nice phrase.

Has a ‘Do I not like that’ ring to it.

    Certainly evokes Verdun 1916.

Great credit to Brentford for building what looks like a fantastic, intimate, modern stadium.

Potential stadium share whilst Gino is building his legacy site on the M25/M11 junction?

As long as it’s still got a pub on every corner I approve of Brentford’s new ground .

I know it’s a step in the right direction but it’s a shame that these new grounds lack individuality.

One thing you've got to hand Deeney is that he's made himself a far bigger figure than his position and influence would usually allow.

Even though he's going into his 5th season as a starting Premier League striker, which even now sounds faintly surreal and incredible in the context of having watched us and him throughout our/his journey, he far outweighs his position as one of the strikers and captain for one of the 'smaller' clubs that's ever featured in the league and is in essence a consistently mid-table team.

Every football fan in the country knows Deeney, and what he's like and what he's supposedly about. He's chosen by the editorial/marketing departments of the major publishers/broadcasters to promote their products above others/even when it's not just a token 'one representative from each club' deal.

I would challenge you to think of a similar figure from, say, Swansea, or Stoke, both of which having had recent spells twice as long as ours in the top flight. Similarly, who is Muff's, or Burnley's, or any club of a presently similar trajectory? I think, whether they love him or hate him, he has very much come to embody an incursion of what football used to be in the middle of the modern game, and people respond to that.

That's not to get dewy-eyed about 'what the game used to be' and 'old-fashioned values', because I don't really care about that too much, and I'm not saying Troy necessarily represents them. But what he does represent is an extremely forthright, throwback fighter of a centre forward who also occupies a position at the heart of his club that very few other modern players do in an age when those figures and relationships between player and club barely exist. That inextricable link may well start to cause us trouble as he begins to wind down, indeed, but at the same time its wider impact has already been felt.
