He’s dreadful. Recouping 5 million should be viewed as a triumph by Giraldi to put a sticking plaster over his earlier buffoonery.

Hold on. It’s an open secret from ITK posters that Villa are struggling to recruit players (ignoring the 60/70 million they have deployed already).

£25m for Mings has the air of desperation. Villa look like this years Fulham. Spend big but take the drop for fun.

  4. Jumbolina

Doubt it. Before adding freely they already have a 100 million midfield duo in McGinn/Grealish.

Mings is also a significant upgrade on any of our centre backs but we aren’t capable or willing to operate in that market.

Mings has down well at Championship level, that is it. Dawson and Cathcart have done it at Premier League and vastly more experienced. Villa have very little up top. Supporters are too easily impressed with money being spent, we will end up way above Villa

Given the choice you’d pick journeymen Cathcart or Dawson over Mings? Really?

As for up top Wesley will wipe the floor with Deeney and Gray and, heaven forbid, Success.

I have no idea why people think Villa will struggle.

Wesley who erm scored 1 in 3 in the Belgium league. Absolutely hilarious.

Disagree - they're spending money, but on what I think will actually be good Prem players. By contrast, I said at the time last summer that Fulham's signings seemed poor.

They also will still retain a large chunk of the core of the team which got them promoted, unlike Fulham who tried to replace pretty much everyone.

Mings looked good for Villa. But I can’t agree that he’s a significant upgrade on what we have. He’s only played a handful of games at CB and not many games in a number of years in any position.

Decent player, would theoretically have fitted in well here. But it’s a huge gamble for Villa to pay that for him. I wouldn’t pay any more than half that given his relative inexperience at CB and in the PL - and his injury history.

If Mings was that good surely he would have been playing for Bournemouth? Let’s see how he gets on.
Similarly, everyone seems to assume Grealish is an England player but we’ve yet to see him as Villa’s main man at Premier League level.

If he likes London so much, surely he could have got a move to Palace instead of them signing Jordan Ayew?!

Isn't Mings injured a lot too?

Wesley 10 in 28 in Belgian league doesn't scream "wipe the floor" but never seen him play so who knows.

I feel like we'll announce two / three signings in a relatively short period of time together and that'll be that.

Personally, I'd like to see a right midfielder as I'm not particularly sold on Hughes there, if Deeney is starting striker then we need goal scoring wingers AND an alternative shape too rather than the rigid 4-4-2 thing Javi loves.

The problem for Mings at Muff is that they have Ake in exactly the same position.

As for Grealish, I do agree that he's hugely overrated; whenever I saw Villa play McGinn and Hourihane looked more useful.

Mings was used predominantly as a LB for Bournemouth and that’s where he played at Ipswich previously. It was only at Villa where he was converted to CB full-time so it’s not certain that Howe would have seen him the same as Ake.

There is a lot to criticise about Bournemouth dealings in the transfer market at times - but they’ve played a blinder to get £25m for a player who cost them £10m and suffered 2 serious long-term injuries and played 20 times in over 3 years.

Agreed on Grealish and McGinn though. Both decent and I think Grealish could do well in the PL as he’s comfortable on the ball and going past players in CM (not many are these days) but £100m for the pair? Absolutely no chance.

I thought the long-term belief with Mings was that he would eventually end up as a CB - he's just gone down the same route that Ake did before him, and many other defenders, of starting out being mostly used as a full-back while younger, before eventually being shifted.

Muff have done well to get the fee they have for him, but the market is a bit nuts at the moment and Villa had him as their priority signing for the summer based on his appearances for them.

I don't think Grealish is even as good as Maddison, despite being older, and Maddison was sold from Norwich in the Champ for £22mil, so yeah.

If Mings is a good player then the fee is irrelevant. If that's what is costs, so what ?

We won't finish as high as 11th this coming season unless Gino adds some real qulaity to the squad. He won't as we can't afford to. Maybe a surprise at the 11th hour as we see who is still standing without a chair when the music stops. It's the economic reality of operating in this league vs richer clubs.

£25m is a lot for a player who's made less than 20 PL appearances over the last 4 years. Likewise, £17m for Targett is a lot to pay for the team that finished 16th last seasons backup LB. Villas recruitment has been a bit iffy so far imo

I'm not sure why we haven't gone for Maupay at Brentford. Exactly what we need imo and looks like he's going to Sheff Utd.

Based on what they would go for in today’s market. Man Utd apparently preparing bid for 50m McGinn. Villa quoted 40m to spurs for grealish a year ago and he has improved since then.

  24. Jumbolina

I’d say the chances of Villa selling Grealish for £22 million are zero. Whether he represents any value above that is another matter.

  25. Burnsy

Because they want £20m for him and we would need to sell a striker or two first before we buy another?

I certainly don’t think we will be breaking our transfer record for a well-stocked position this summer.

  26. Burnsy

There was one iffy article about United bidding £50m for McGinn. He cost Villa £2.5m within the last year. Doesn’t take much to believe that story was complete rubbish.

McGinn would not fetch anywhere near £50m. And wasn’t Grealish quoted at £20m-£25m (even as low as £15m) until the American owners bought the club and stopped the deal. I think they just said he wasn’t for sale after that. I don’t remember any stories about it being £40m.

  27. Burnsy

We’d likely have been rejected by him as I bet he wants to go back to his old club - but Burnley have had a bid of £10m accepted for Jay Rodriguez (release clause activated). That’s a decent price for a decent player at a good age if we were by chance thinking of adding a striker...

  28. Harrow Orn

Well stocked in terms of numbers, yes. In terms of ability, no. I really rate him and think he'll score a fair few next season in the Prem.

We'll never improve if we continue relying on Deeney and Gray. Unless Lukebakio is staying, and Pedro hits the ground running in Jan then I will be disappointed if we do not buy another striker.

Deulofeu plays as a striker and has plenty of ability and scored enough when played there last season. A whole season of him up front could bring decent numbers. Deeney and Gray are acceptable foil for that. A striker would be nice - but when funds are limited, we really need to strengthen elsewhere before bringing in a striker.

AS in Spain saying that Cucho’s move to Valladolid on loan is indeed quite likely. Ronaldo being majority owner is a big factor.

Also says Watford won’t entertain selling him at any price. If that has any truth about it, seems we have high hopes for him still. Reading between the lines, it would make you believe he has a new deal or his contract has more than 12 months left.

So the West Ham links come to fruition - they're signing him after paying his release clause of £45mil!

He'll be a good signing for them, but that's another very large fee.

  33. lowerrous

What has Ronaldo being an owner got to do with anything?

Watford's stance could also easily be just posturing to try and get a higher fee were he to be sold.

Daniel Levy offered 15m. Villa told him to get stuffed. If you are going to claim (multiple) media articles are rubbish about McGinn probably best not making up your own nonsense about Grealish?

Search for “Grealish £40m” and suddenly you will find all the stories you don’t remember.

The story that Utd might bid £50mil for McGinn was the most farcical nonsense to appear outside of April Fool's Day.
