Yeah, who needs players in their peak years when we've got a squad full of either soon past-it has-beens like Foster and Gomes, or prospects still far too young to really be expected to make an impact, and where it's not even obvious that they'll ever even be good enough, such as Dahlberg?!

Same story with most of our team really.

Must be sending one of the other 2 younger goalies out on loan again.

DB reckons he can challenge Foster for the number one spot - is he in for a surprise?

If going to Falkirk is a surprise then probably a massive one.

Until they're tested we won't know if they're good enough. Expect Gomes as third choice helping out with the young South Americans and Bachmann as number 2.

Olsen has had a very poor season and Foster has enough time left before handing over to Bachmann or Dahlberg. It would be a waste of precious funds buying another GK with no real reason to do so. In my opinion, this is a prudent move by the club - if the idea is to promote Bachmann or Dahlberg to No.2 and have Gomes as No.3 and a mentor to others.

Being young doesn’t equate to being not good enough. Your comments about Dahlberg are the same as Cucho - you seem very reluctant to believe that they should be given a chance. Not sure why.

With Dahlberg I have absolutely no idea whether he will or won't be good enough, even less so than most of our other youngsters as I've never seen him play.

However, it's obvious that he's very unproven and not seen as ready yet by the club (he's not played a single minute for us).

I've got nothing against our young players being given a chance - that's a completely different thing from my opinion of Cucho not having shown himself as being good enough for us yet in the matches he has played in over the last season.

Pleased he's staying. He's such a positive influence in the dressing room and will help Pedro a lot when he joins.

As for Foster, I'm concerned about him for next season. He was one of our worst performers at the end of the last one, and that's saying something. Combined with his supposed inability to train fully due to his ongoing knee issues I wouldn't be surprised if another gk was called upon sooner rather than later. Bachmann could well be ready to step up already though.

Certainly looked it in the cup final.

He didn’t do too badly in the few games before, but I don’t see any need for us to manage his decline. Should have let him go.

Always a good character to keep, certainly good enough as a backup. Will be instrumental in keeping Joao Pedro happy and training Pontus Dahlberg. Hope we can keep him on a staff member for many years.

Football, don’t you love it? Fans pleased we are paying someone somewhere between 500k and a million pounds to hang around and be affable.

If we are worried about Joao Pedro settling in just get him a puppy.

Excellent news. Means we played an old man in out biggest game ever for not even sentimental reasons.

Yeah or like pay 2 or 3 nice, religious Brazilians to hang around, make him feel welcome, get his hands on the tons of meat and beans they like to eat and keep him out of trouble.

Such a goodwill squad shouldn't run to more than 100k per year.

I am looking forward to sentimental celebration Mark II when he plays the run in next year because squad morale will be decimated if he doesn’t. Apparently.

Much as we love him my thoughts are broadly in line with lowerrous a la his initial post.

The thing is, it's a gamble, because as lowerrous has also said, the Foster situation is up in the air. He's a top goalie, but he's also at an age where he's walking a tightrope suspended from one end of Schrodinger's steel chamber to the other. He will continue to be evergreen and brilliant until the second he stops being it, and that could be any second from now. It could, in fact, have been a previous second, near the end of last season, when he seemed to forget who he was with about four matches left to go. We won't be able to tell definitively when that second was, or is, or if it has occurred or indeed will occur, until we open the chamber and observe him playing in the upcoming season, and it either has or does/does not.

If it does turn out to be the case, then that means we might end up being forced to rely on Bachmann to come in and be the number one (yes, it's also possible that Foster might be preserved as No.1 regardless of how badly his form might dip, we can't tell). If that situation does come to pass, it's a risk. An interesting one, and Bachmann did extremely well at Kilmarnock, earning his spot and a succession of rave reviews to boot (I for one am very intrigued to see how he might do, so I certainly hope it's the case that Gomes is basically here for his leadership and influence behind the scenes, and it's Bachmann who gets the cup games) but whatever way it goes, only time will tell, and it's also possible that Daniel may not yet be cut out for the top level.

A horrendous token gesture and colossal waste of money.

Sure he’s a lovely bloke but sorry, this is a poor move.

I am not sure why this is considered a bad move by Gino. unless people think Foster is not good enough to start as number 1. I don't see how the other two young keepers can be argued to be better options. No other keeper established in the Premier League is going to come as number 2 to Foster. So the arguments against Gomes, suggest that Foster should now be our number two keeper.

Gomes, from what you see, is a big positive personality at the club, and that has a value. I also think his performances in the matches he played were pretty good. compared to a new signing his wages are probably marginal too.

My suspicion is he is being kept close, because Gino thinks he may develop into an employee/associate when he does give up playing.

Oh great. So if, as rumoured Joao Pedro doesn't come until next summer, we'll have to give Gomes another year just so he can buy him some winter clothes and take him out to Brazilian restaurants.

He’s a footballing geriatric. Slow and indecisive these days. Is going to get worse and likely his effectiveness will fall off a cliff soon. Bachman has played well out on loan and should be the number 2.

Seems a good bloke so if they want him to be a non playing employee the do it now.

  32. Heidar

Everyone seems to be ignoring this.

Yeah, let's just ignore it and say it was a terrible idea to keep this man here. Gino hasn't got a clue what he's doing. Token contract. Character and team spirit is irrelevant to football anyway, ability is everything.

Perhaps we should give him a 5 year contract?

In seriousness when we fail time and again to ungrade our poor centrebacks people suggest we can’t afford it. Perhaps not extending ancient keeper contracts and not giving 30 year old Prodl a 4 year extension might help in this regard.

Your adjectives are a bit much no?

Fair enough, disagree with the move. But it’s hardly ‘horrendous’ and even less so if the idea is for him to be 3rd choice then it’s a smart move given his sway in the squad and character. And ‘colossal’?! I doubt he’s on a huge wage. We have bigger contributors to wasted money within the squad than Gomes. Given Foster’s performances over a large part of last season, I’d say it’s obvious he will be No.1. Would be a bigger waste of funds (of which I doubt we have loads) to sign another GK when we already have Bachmann and Dahlberg as well - these guys have to be integrated towards first team football at some point.

It’s understandable that people have doubts over his ability and age - but let’s see what the clubs idea is with the move before it’s massively criticised. Not saying he will be ever-present (far from it) - but most of us wrote Holebas off as too old and not good enough and last season happened. I’m sure there is method behind this that goes beyond him being No.2 and playing in the cups again.
