Battersea Power Station...Little bit surprised Chelsea considered it as an alternative to Stamford Bridge tbh, it being so close to Watford

Probably the Watford Steam Laundry - formerly the Rookery Silk Mill - looking at JB Nunn's Book of Watford.

Watford used to be the site of Charlie’s Chocolate Factory

It's the somewhat over-engineered foundations for the Watford General Hospital temporary overflow car park. Eventually someone saw sense and knocked it down.

There are two distinct industrial buildings, to the left with the two chimneys is the Watford council destructor. Basically a giant oven where all rubbish from domestic bin collection and the sludge from sewage works was burnt. Destructor’ was the term used for incineration 100 years ago. It was first adopted by the aptly named Albert Fryer who patented his furnace design when one of his incinerators was built in Nottingham in 1874. Manlove Alliott, the first large-scale manufacturers of destructors, then copyrighted the term for a while before destructors came into much wider use and production. Before World War One, destructors became the disposal option of choice for most large South East towns and most of London. Several destructors also generated electricity for sale, and many were linked to sewage pumping. Electricity generation also led a significant number of councils to adopt electric refuse vehicles, at least for their flatter collection rounds near to the plant, so they could manage the essential heavy weights of batteries onboard. Destructor production also became a significant UK industry with Manlove, Babcock and others sending their engineering to all corners of the empire and beyond. Rotary screens were added to take out fines, and metal recovery targeted cans. But the rest went on to the burning grates, often loaded one floor above the area where the grates were later emptied. Rows of destructor ‘cells’ were each batch fed, allowing plant to be built to the size needed locally. The resulting inert clinker was often used in roading or other reclamation, the process having consumed nearly all the calorific value and organic content.

The larger multi(6) chimneyed gothic building to the centre is the Watford Council electricity coal fired power station. Built in 1900 to provide electricity for the town. This was nationalised in 1947 and given to the BEA which became the CEGB in 1957. The station operated until 1968, and later replaced with a gas turbine station with two large concrete chimneys.

I confess I was aiming for a Like & pressed Reply instead.

On my phone it takes about 5 mins to delete the reply post so I’ve opted to actually reply instead.

Now I’m, so to speak, holding the mic, my question is how do you know this?

Apparently the mortuary has seen promise in an 'at your seat' service for 19/20 in the UGT.

That new block directly behind the GT doesn’t sit well does it. It looks like it will land lock that side and any expansion of the stand could be limited.

  13. Very weird picture. Why are the new hospital buildings at a 15% slope compared to the ground?

    Slope of the pitch?

They didnt want all the beds sliding down towards the Rookery 2nd half.

Yeah.. i didnt zoom in on the pic last night but now i have i can see we've got even less space if those are the plans they decide to go with. I see there's a green space (bloody tree huggers) between the larger buildings and that block. Just move the damn thing over 25 meters and we can talk stand redevelopment. Mind you i also see the old buildings on Vic Road (the original Union workhouse entrance?) are still part of the plans. Listed maybe? So we are always gonna be restricted by that.

Someone has posted they are number 818 on the waiting list for a season ticket. Has the club ever indicated how long the total list is, because it’s surely an indicator as to the viability of expanding the stadium?

No they haven’t. Though they also forgot to say what the prices are for season tickets being offered next week - I had to email to ask. Seems a curious oversight.

Thank God and a genuine Big Thankyou to all posters on this entertaining thread.

It’s the only thing that’s keeping me sane in the barren summer of endless Brexit and politics nonsense and nebulous transfer speculation on this forum ...

Discussion and plans and pics on stadium expansion, Watford Council incinerators, size and location of TV screens, guest appearances of Baz, debate on ratio of female to male toilet facilities (when we know we’re all morphing into one big humanistic unisex blob so there will only be unisex toilets), car park ownership and location, restrictive listed building location, season ticket waiting list speculation, escaping Oompa Loompas, critical info on Stevo’s remotely controlled sex life...

It’s all entertaining and this is by far the best summer thread on the forum.

As for the chances of expansion to a 30,000 seater stadium with safe access and enhanced car parking at the Vic, it seems to me..

There is a statistical way of working out how many are on the list if we know where enough people are in the list.

I’m not sure I’ve got it entirely right but if we assume a normal distribution (unlikely for this forum) :

From the 3 we have if we add up the numbers and assume they are all the mean number in the waiting list, take the mean and then double I think that’s roughly there so I reckon 1,500 ish on the list.

If there were 10 people on the list and we knew that someone was first on the list someone 9th and someone 5th we’d know the mean is 5th and the list probably 10.

I’m using hacked maths here but if someone else wants to jump in be my guest

    I’ll jump in.

As you say there is definitely not a normal distribution on this forum.

But by using my own cognitive dissonance and your double think theory and taking it’s original source which is 1984 and using the full extent of my statistical knowledge p=0.05, I can confidently doublethink there are 3,968 on the waiting list.

(Apologies, I’m bored and we’ve already won the cricket..) :(

    Confidence intervals or GTFO.

Also, if P=.05, then it’s not <.05, and therefore would usually not be deemed statistically significant. That’s the only reason that we should not take your statistics seriously.

By far the easiest way of finding out the length of the list would be to find someone on here who has recently been added, and has the lowest Home categorisation.
