Liverpool didn't really want to win this, it's a consolation prize. Like when Razer won the World Title in Robot Wars but not the UK title.

Yeah. Spine-tingling. Never see anything like it before.

Another match influenced by a referee.

He gives a penalty, and people try to justify it. He gives nothing and no one would say a thing about it.

Too many games are won and lost on the whim of a match official.

Was the penalty even reviewed by VAR? If not, then it's not worth having.

You cant defend with your arms up like that. It was VARred and it was a pen. Awful game though. Amazing how many liverpool fans have crawled out of their holes on facebook.

It seemed like it was given because he had his arm out. Whether the ball hit it or not seemed irrelevant.

Never a penalty IMO. The referee has to go to his little TV screen to review it, and he didn't do this. It was not reviewed.

The ball hit the chest, so apparently that's enough to give Liverpool a goal. The most ridiculous thing is football fans are being slowly convinced this is a correct call. It's farcical as far as I'm concerned.

What Kompany did against us in the cup final was far more of a penalty than anything Sissoko did.

Below is a quote from the rules. The ball brushed Sissoko's underarm AFTER it hit his chest.

But situations like Sissoko’s would not be penalised, as there would be no free kick or penalty if “the ball touches a player’s hand or arm directly from their own head, body, foot or the head, body or foot of another player who is near”.

I’ll start by saying that, for me, should never have been a penalty. The balance is swinging much too far in favour of the attacking side.

But that quote is from next season’s rules. This season is much simpler - was the contact deliberate? Didn’t look like it to me but the referee decided differently.

Agree with you that it was never a penalty. It’s a shame, because it could have been a decent game. As it was, the early goal killed it completely because Liverpool could just sit in and wait for chances to break.

Had he not given the penalty, I struggle to believe that people would even recall the incident later on, as the ball clearly hits his chest/armpit area before bouncing onto his arm.

    Did Kane touch the ball?

Was he ever within 20m of the ball?

Didn’t watch the game so I thought I’d google the score.

The headlines tell me everything I need to know:

Gerrard muttering something about ‘a deserved win’, ‘listen to Klopp’s interview’ and pictures of Liverpool players with they’re tongues out like they’re 5-year olds.

I agree it shouldn’t have been a penalty but the unfortunate thing for Sissoko was that his arm was moving downwards just as the ball deflected onto it. At full speed it did look as if he was trying to block it, so I don’t blame the ref for giving it. The VAR, however, can analyse it further and should have recommended the ref have a second look in this case. The ref only has have a second look if the VAR recommends it, not every time an incident is reviewed.

Whatever anyone says, like Liverpool or not they deserved something from this season, I feel if either of the teams had been playing foreign opposition and won everyone would have been pleased for them, because it's two English teams playing each other people forget how important the game is, treat it like a P.L. Game and moan about whoever won!

The game badly needed a Spurs goal!

Agreed. Disgraceful that a penalty like that should be given in a game like that. VAR seems pointless. Just a mechanism to find a way to justify the decision made on the pitch. Referees not wanting to overrule referees.
Just like BBC's "Points of view".
"I spoke to BBC's head of political broadcasting."
"We were right to air ........because............".

I think it's time they change the rules for penalties.

A penalty should only be awarded if a clear goal scoring opportunity is denied. This would stop accidental handballs, or diving being awarded as a penalty.

All other minor infringements should be freekicks within the penalty box and can be direct, but not penalties. If the infringement occurs closer to the goal than 12 yards, then free kick should be taken closest to the incident but on a 12 yard arc line. This way players can stand in a wall in front or behind the keeper.

If a clear goal scoring opportunity is denied outside of the penalty area, then a penalty should be awarded but no red card.

I think this would be a much fairer system.

Penalties should be reactively rare and only awarded if the referee feels a foul has been committed which has denied an clear goal scoring opportunity, anywhere on the pitch.

Latest skill for all players to learn this summer? Rather than try and pass to a team mate in the area, they try to kick the ball at an opponent's arm, the latest trick in the repertoire of those looking to cheat the ref into giving a penalty. Meanwhile, defenders will be working on how to run around with their arms gaffa-taped to their sides like Michael Flatley doing that daft Irish dance.
