The U20 World Cup kicks off tonight, I fully imagine the Pozzos will be scouting this pretty heavily - especially since 2 of our players (Cucho and Jaime Alvarado) will be playing for Colombia (and both are apparently starting tonight).

Cucho is one of the players tipped by the media to make a big impact at the tournament and his performances could well end up factoring into a work permit decision. I can't say I know much about Alvarado other than the fact he's a central midfielder so will be interesting to see how he plays.

Colombia U20 vs Poland U20 kicks off at 7.30PM for those with nothing better to do (like me) and is apparently on well-known sports channel Freesports (channel 422 on Sky)

Remember raving about Peñaranda to my Geordie mate two years ago, only to see perennial Newcastle back-up Freddie Woodman save his penalty in the final lol. Two years on, nothing much has changed for those two!

    England didn't qualify?

But I thought our young playas were the bestest?

I only watched the first half but it was a pretty forgettable half of football. Cucho did nothing of note (and was subbed after an hour), and I only remember Alvarado touching the ball twice and one of those was a shot that has probably reached Jupiter by now.

Next game is against Senegal on Sunday (5pm ko). Hoping for better performances as I was pretty underwhelmed with the pair of them (although according to the commentator the Polish CBs are very highly regarded)

Several notable absentees from this edition. Brazil were knocked out from CONMEBOL qualification. Germany, Spain, England and Holland from Europe. Poland took an automatic spot which meant UEFA qualification is harder. The u20 are a vital progression for many countries national programmes. Generally out of a squad of twenty three six to seven players will make it to the national team for many of the CONMEBOL teams. Uruguay looked particularly excellent in their win against Norway.

Colombia fell to a 2-0 defeat to Senegal in their second group game. Didn't watch the match but Alvarado played the full 90 with Cucho subbed off after 74 mins. Their last group game is against whipping boys of the group Tahiti (who last 3-0 to Senegal and 5-0 to Poland). Colombia can still progress provided they make up 3 goals on Poland (so ideally Senegal will beat Poland knocking a goal or 2 off Polands GD). Would really expect Cucho to open his account against Tahiti. Game is on Wednesday at 7.30PM

I watched some of the Uruguay vs Honduras game and thought the overall quality was pretty disappointing. The Colombia vs Senegal match was a bit better. The only real bright spark appeared to be Schiappacasse, though he missed a couple of very good chances before eventually scoring. He's also already signed for Atletico Madrid. I didn't see their game vs Norway, but I wouldn't be surprised if they largely looked excellent against them because Norway are rubbish - they just managed to lose 2-0 to New Zealand ffs.

On another note, Portugal vs Argentina this evening should be interesting.

Of course they are. EPPPPPPPPPP has been a huge success and is massively increasing the output of good young players. A veritable production line.

It certainly isn't designed to favour the biggest clubs and let them steal young players for peanuts.

Assuming they beat Tahiti, that'll basically be Colombia through anyway as the best 3rd placed teams qualify for the last 16 too, though obviously finishing 1st or 2nd should get them an easier draw.

Spooky how three of the teams in that group were also in the same group in Russia last year, back to the future, eh?

So the tie of the tournament so far between pre-tournament favourites and reigning u19 and u17 European champions Portugal and Argentina. Ends with a 2-0 win for Argentina. The Albiceleste dominated the early exchanges but after the opener Portugal pressed forward and only the excellence of Manuel Roffo in goal and Nehuen Perez curtailed any damage with Jota giving Facundo Mura a torrid time down the right flank.

However both sides failed to score several chances in an entertaining game. Batista the coach of Argentina employed a 4-3-3 to play on the counter with three pacy forwards supported by Barco from midfield who will soon be on the route from MLS to Europe judging by his performances so far. Both teams are also under strength due to injury and non selections. Domingos Quina is the notable absentee along with Joao Felix for Portugal while players like Facundo Colidio, Benjamin Garre and Leandro Balerdi were amazingly left out by Batista.

Didn't get called up for their Toulon squad either, wonder if he's still nursing that shoulder injury.

I hope you're not being sarcastic.

The best thing for a player is to be stuck in the reserves of a mahusive club, get paid ridiculous wages and think they've made it before they've turned 17 before being released into the lower divisons. The top 4/ the FA told me so.

https://streamable.com/5oflb - Cuchos third. Tahiti are bad, their keeper looks like a Sunday league keeper - quite large for a footballer!

Full-time, 6-0, Senegal and Poland draw 0-0 in a predictably dull game, so Colombia finish 2nd in the group. Will play second place in group C, either New Zealand or Uruguay (New Zealand just need to draw against Uruguay to top the group)

Just imagine, we might have Cucho and Pedro playing for us after Christmas.

Cucho is still not that great. Scoring 3 goals vs Tahiti doesn't change that.

Erling Braut Håland, Norway's 18 year-old striker, just scored 9 goals vs Honduras, for comparison. The way Honduras played looked dodgy as hell though.

Nope, RB Salzburg bought him from Molde in January for €5mil after he'd already been scoring 1 goal every 2 games in the Norwegian top flight. Supposedly Man Utd were also keen on him. If Ole stays at Man Utd, I suspect that if he ever moves again it will be to there (perhaps via RB Leipzig first).

PS, he is Alf-Inge Håland's son.
