I think for that Coventry we had 2 kids at the back which didn't help and Wimbledon were probably just Wimbledon as they were back then.

True to say we did suffer with injuries including Mooney.

Yeah and to be fair coventry had a quality team that season.

Hedman, Telfer, Shaw, Williams, Hall, Hadji, McAllister, Palmer, Froggatt, Keane, Roussel

Galli was before my time but since then no-one comes close to Cathcart.

Angella scored a lot but wasn't a great defender (hence why he was swiftly replaced moving to the PL and struggled at QPR I think too).

Those saying DeMerit don't seem to be taking into account the fact he played most of his time for us in the Championship.

Despite being an ex Pro, I still couldn't taketo his opinion on the game in boxpark Sunday seriously with that american accent.

Excellent question. A bit worrying that our current CBs aren't comfortably better than those in the struggling Championship teams! It's between Galli, Britos (of 2 years ago) and Cathcart for me. Page and Angella not far behind.

Just musing how far too many of our ex-heroes went on to play for QPR.

Angella a ball playing centre half would have done a great job for us in the prem imho ...... McClelland best ever but I loved Ian Bolton too

Maybe because he was a really poor lightweight defender ? The fact that his career since then has gone downhill says everything.

Well, since his underwhelming stint at QPR, he’s played two seasons at a Udinese team who on average finished higher than us, before playing this season at a club that finished 5th in the Belgian top flight, so I wouldn’t say his career has gone massively downhill.

Only playing a dozen games each season before dropping to the Belgian league when he should be at the peak of his career. Perhaps "really poor" was unfair but he wasn't great defensively in the champ..

He'd stroll into our team, and be one of the top scorers too.

Since 2000? Cathcart, this time around. When he was on loan here he was too young and made too many mistakes.
I have a lot of time for DeMerit but as has been pointed out, he was largely in the Championship.
    All time?
Sims and McClelland, followed by Steve Terry.

Never rated Terry. 10/10 in the air but barely able to kick a ball if it was on the pitch.

I'd have kaboul on the list ahead of hoban if we're allowed to include permanently injured players.
    Still went for Galli mind

What an extraordinary comment. Watford legend.

Doubt we will ever do better than McClelland though.

Don't see it with Demerit - courageous, committed and a grafter - he used to put out alot of fires with his pace...mainly fires he caused.

Galli was fantastic, but only with us for one season.

I went for Malky - solid, dependable and improved Demerit - scored against the filth - so an instant legend for me.

True though. Great in the air, never comfortable with the ball at his feet. Never really a first team regular, had spells in the team before being dropped, spent most of the times as cover for Sims. Extraordinary to list him as one of our best ever CBs.

Sims / McClelland clearly the best for me.

Clarke Carlisle was decent. Just a shame about his off field demons.

Agree regarding Demerit not being fantastic. Used to make so many last ditch “heroic” tackles.... because he used to be out of sync with the rest of the back 4, and cause them. Don’t think that’s his fault as he came into the game so late, but definitely caused a fair few problems.

I have to go for Cathcart as he’s been consistently good for us in the premier league and as good as they were I haven’t seen any of the others do it regularly at the top level .

I did love Angella , very composed on the ball , but I don’t think he would have cut it at premier league level as you always felt he was prone to lapses .

Looking through the list though we’ve had some very inspirational centre half’s who wee real leaders as well . Page , Mackay , Demerit all spring to mind .

Incidentally, I thought Prodl was brilliant when he first arrived , but no idea what happened to him

Must have missed all those games that Sims, McClelland and Steve Terry have played for us since 2000....

Could they still do a job now?

Fitz Hall was pure class. Granted he was in the Championship and was injured all the time. He could defend, lead, distribute and knew where the goal was.

Malky. Not only a solid defender, but also smart enough at the dark arts - Leaving a foot in without being punished, making a foul look like a dive etc .

He also didn't allow himself to get bullied by the PC brigade, which in this post Farage world is to be celebrated, I believe.

Galli was just magnificent to watch. Physically he was well past it, but his game sense was so good he got away with it most of the time.

I've never seen a Watford defender before or since who could read a game the way he clearly could.
