With all of this talk about Watford needing new centre-backs this makes me ask the question: who is the best we've had in modern times? Craig Cathcart gets my vote for his consistency in a higher division.

Only went and missed off big Danny Shittu...

Galli by a mile. DeMerit and Mackay were above average and would walk into today’s team. I think Angella gets in too and was wrongly discarded.

    The rest aren’t even close.

I was torn between voting for Demerit and Page. Loved both of them, but went with Demerit.

Galli. I remember when he scored against Walsall at the Vic then seeing a massive grin on Vialli's face.

Good player but one we could not keep due to costs. DeMerrit was also a great one, got stuck in.

Also wasn't he about 37/8 but still had it all - could tell he'd played at the very top level.

Not sure the likes of DeMerit and Shittu would have allowed us to get the run around we did on Saturday.

Then again they might have not lasted too long!

Galli is the best defender in the history of our club, followed by Angella since 2000.

It is a crime that we have italian owners but no italian centre back. WTF is that about?

  14. My favourite is JDM, but that’s a different question.

Sims and McClelland are the best ever.
    Keith Dublin 3rd.
Galli was great, oozed class but ancient and short term, plus was operating in the second tier.

Think we swapped Dublin with Tommy Mooney so worked out ok in the end....

Was mooney at the cup final? I wonder what he made of the gutless performance from 2-0 onwards. I don't recall us losing 6-0 when he was in the premier league, and there was a way bigger gap between us and the rest back then.

Fight and heart go a long way.

Can’t believe no one has mentioned Ramon Vega. Dangerous in both penalty areas was our Ramon, and well worth the wages we paid him.

He sidesteps the Terry Butcher head bandage fashion nightmare & makes it a perky hair accessory.

If you want to start a 'Became an established player in asset management/private equity' thread maybe more appropriate.

If you think DeMerit would get in, why do you think Cathcart shouldn’t come close? Deserved mainstay in an established Premier team and five seasons in top flight vs a player with only one, and more international caps. I liked DeMerit and he was great for the level we were at at the time, but there must be a reason why he never played in the top flight beyond the Aidy season. I actually rated Shittu more highly at times (more powerful presence, but with a lot of energy for someone of his bulk, not bad on the ball, and more of a threat upfront). Even Britos and Prodl were better for a while than DeMerit was in 2006/07, and he was one of the better players in a struggling side.

I’m with you on Angella though, we should’ve never let him go. Maybe Hoban will finally come good?

Whilst not Italian, I would go for Cathcart.

A weak end to this season but a stalwart for us over several Prem seasons playing alongside less capable players.

NI Player of the Season in a stronger than usual NI team.

Apologies. Seem stuck in the Angella groove.

Anyway, a sneak preview of Udinese's back 3 for next season.

Think he was - our worse defeat then was 5-0 to Wimbledon and a 4-0 at Coventry.

Aye, I wasnt at the wimbledon game but was at coventry. Horrendous scenes. Though mooney was injured by then if I remember rightly. Just looked at our team for wimbledon...

Chamberlain, Page, Palmer, Robinson, Ngonge, Hyde, Johnson, Wooter, Gravelaine, Williams, Cox

    Gravelaine was well ace.
