Lots of beer and an accidental dose of night nurse washed the sadness out of me last night. It also rendered me temporarily zombified this morning but hey ho it got me over the worse.

*disclaimer. Kids and Moog do not try this at home.

Then there was a three mile queue just before Bridgewater on the A38. We usually come round on the B3339, you see, just before Bridgewater.
We decided to risk it 'cause they always say they're going to widen it there. Yes, well just by the intersection there where the A372 joins up. There's plenty of room to widen it there, there's only grass verges. They could get another six feet, knock down that hospital. Then we took the coast road through Williton - we got all the Taunton traffic on the A358 from Crowcombe and Stogumber.

    Perfect.

(Although this could be crucial intel for our West Country contingent.)

  5. I've read a load of reports; watched some footage of the game; watched countless videos of the flag waving; faced many messages of condolences or piss taking.

I'm now going to go and get a Chinese and watch the golf, stop going on twitter, ignore WhatsApp and generally stay away from most forms of social media for a week or 2.

It will be forgotten. We will get the "did you cry at Wembley" for a season. We will get endless repeats of it every fa cup weekend for a season or 2. But it will be numb in the memory by then.

I want to get excited about football again so will eagerly follow transfer news and gossip, and I'm looking forward to next season. Hopefully with a bit of a stronger first 11, a bit of a stronger squad, and a push for a decent top 10 finish.

But tonight. Tonight is a Chinese and the golf.

I thought I would be mortified but I'm fine.
Mr IBB is expecting a delayed reaction rant but it won't happen.
I even chuckled at the Scunthorpe fan saying he thought the flags should have been white. I then told him there is no such thing as original sin.
Almost everyone else has been avoiding the subject,as if it were a death in the family and they didn't quite know what to say.
I'll be annoyed if there's a hangover in August however and hope,as well all do to see a cb and a few other good signings.

Further thoughts on this - some perspective from the mouths of babes.

I was at Wembley with son no. 1, age 12 and Watford veteran.

My 5yo son was at home watching the final on TV with his grandparents.

He has attended one game, Wolves at home this season.

Was glued to the match until at 6 down decided he didn't want to watch any more.

His gran asked if he still wanted to support Watford, he was only little and it was ok to choose another team (as an aside -how could she?! My own mother!)

He said indignantly 'No I don't want to change from Watford. And I hate Man City'.

Even in defeat true loyalty shines through. Another true follower joins the yellow and black rollercoaster of emotions.

My feelings after Saturday, and the season as a whole, with the bittersweet emotions in the last couple of months, harken back to a year at school, the first year of my GCSEs.

In the first term, I got a really good school report because I worked hard because, well, I wanted to get a good report after patchy ones the previous year. However, as I developed a video game addiction (16-bit technology was amazing during the early 90s - showing my age there!) and probably due to the usual issues adolescents face, the quality of my work gradually declined, and at the end after I got distinctly mixed exam results (did very well in maths and languages, mediocre in science and awful in history) the summary of my report was that my work had been bedevilled by “very poor organisation” (a phrase teachers use euphemistically when they really mean you’ve been a lazy git).

So it was with this season in its own way. Although in this case I don’t think the players’ commitment can be questioned, and the decline didn’t really set in until the closing weeks, I had similar feelings of what might have been, and more frustrating as this time it was totally out of my, and every Watford fan’s control.

During the opening four-game winning streak, I felt pride as a Watford fan that I hadn’t felt since that awesome year 2015, with our winning promotion, Iggy’s seemingly never-ending scoring run, Troy breaking his duck in the top flight in front of a jubilant away support at Stoke, and the brilliant start to 2015-16 with those fantastic wins over West Ham and Liverpool. Not only were we winning convincingly and with style, setting the tone with our utterly dominant win against Brighton, but we destroyed several hoodoos in that winning run alone (away form, winning at Burnley, beating Palace at home, beating a top four side, and from a goal down!) with revelatory performances from key players, notably Capoue and Holebas, two players for whom many fans only three months previously would have happily paid for a taxi to the airport to take them back to their homelands for nothing. As expected results thereafter were mixed, but we maintained a high league position and very rarely were our performances less than average. And highlights were many, even in defeats, whether the battling performance against Man Utd where we nearly got a deserved draw, outplaying the Gunners on their own patch, almost knocking out Spurs in the league cup with ten men, the convincing away wins at tough opponents Wolves and West Ham, the turn-around at Palace, doing the treble over them in the FA Cup, big but not totally one-sided wins over the relegated sides, Del’s hat trick at Cardiff, the crazy if frustrating thriller at Bournemouth, culminating in that epic vs Wolves at Wembley, and being in 7th place with four games with three winnable home ones to go and dreaming of a return to the glory days and European nights. There was a team spirit and togetherness, with a fair few games won or drawn from behind, sometimes in the last minute, and this with a squad with no major signings, and which with Deeney, Gray, Cleverley, Hughes, Mariappa, Cathcart and the return of Foster, had a more British/homegrown feel than any of our previous Pozzo-era squads. And like said above, it was great to see key players return to the first team or back in form, like Cathcart, Holebas, Capoue, and Gomes for the FA Cup, it reinforced the feeling of being reunited collectively as a team and fan base.

But then, it started to go wrong with Deeney’s sending off, a couple of bad Foster errors and that Shane Long goal from which the team never really recovered and we finished bottom half after not being out of the top 10 all season, save a week or two - and then our final chance for redemption, as we all too painfully remember, was blown in spectacular if not totally surprising fashion.

Going back to my school days, the decline continued during the second year, and after only rallying in the last couple of months after getting terrible mock results, I only achieved two A’s, way below what I was capable of. Let’s hope the same thing doesn’t happen the following season, and we get the reinforcements that we haven’t managed to get in the last 12 months - I really think this summer is make or break, and the make will determine whether the club is on the cusp of the greatness that we’ve been dreaming of for over 30 years. C’mon u Orns!

I keep reminding myself that at least we lasted 93 minutes!
That's 61 minutes longer than Natasha Zvereva did at Roland Garros in the '88 final.

    On the plus side;
    • The first half was pretty evenish. Take that chance and get that penalty and it's a different game.
    • Started the second half well and were the better side for 10-15 mins.
    • At 0-3 we could have gone into the bunker and played for a 0-3, 0-4 score but went 3 upfront as our only remote chnace of getting back in the game
    • Teamsheet and tactics meant we gave it a go and didn't park the bus
    • The fans over the last 15 mins
    • Hammered but were playing the best team in the land, a million miles better than us, realistically what did we expect

    On the negative:
    • Why didn't we park the bus and play for a 0-0, 1-0 win ? Surely a better chance of winning.
    • Players seemed slow to close down, lethargic, tired. No attempt to make it difficult for them to pick a pass.
    • Joint record defeat
    • It can never be right to bring GD off and bring IS on. Never.
    • The abuse to come over the next season. Not looking fwd to the CP or WW games.

Still not sure whether to be disappointed, angry or just accepting. In my pre match prediction I'd said getting thrashed was more likely than a win and not to rule out a record defeat.

They were excellent and basically kept going till the end whereas were seemed to suffer more and more as the game went on - and as TUT says threw on more attackers when maybe a more defensive approach might have stemmed the flow (but maybe not!)

Perhaps our good positive start to the 2nd half actually got City going more than if we'd just carried on sitting back watching them pass around us!

Still think 2/3 of the goals could have been avoided by us with better passing/marking etc.

I don't want to be overly critical of our manager but would a Graham Taylor team have lost a Cup Final 6-0?

Sorry, in my self-indulgent ramble above I didn’t answer the question directly. So, how to process Saturday’s result:

    (1) Pretend the last five games never happened
    (2) Find a Premier League table from after 34 games of the season, add it to your Internet favourites, maybe even print it out and pin it to your bedroom wall (although your partner may think you even weirder than you are)
    (3) Re-read reports and fans’ comments on favourite games of 2018/19 to remind you what a great season it was up to Shane Long’s 7th second goal
    (4) Pretend that due to a succession of late spring deluges all fixtures apart from Man City’s were called off, the FA were unable to reschedule them in the limited time left, WFC were unable to field a team for the final due to a sudden flu epidemic affecting three quarters of the named team, City were awarded the cup by default and we are playing in Europe after all

I'm proud to be part of this club. Despite the in fighting on here and the fact we have a few **** players. There are a few other clubs that would have sung their hearts out at 5-0 down. But not many. Yes it was a futile defiant reaction to being ****ed but watching videos of man city fans giving us a round of applause is a bit reaffirming of our worth.

This club is and has always been a great team to follow.

“What can we do? They’re too good for us.” That’s a lazy approach in my book. GT would never have accepted that.
By the way, Liverpool were also very dominant in the 80s. We lost every league match on Merseyside in all six seasons we spent in the First Division - and that includes at Goodison - but there were no capitulations.

    Personally, I like Maple Cross.

A3 is a classic, with equidistant access to Heathrow & Gatwick.

And, for balance, how about the one just North of the Dartford Crossing?

You can smell Basildon from there.

We did set up for 0-0 at 60.

A deep & narrow double block which worked fine for the first 25.

The Doucs loss of possession was almost as crucial as the Bobby incident. V unusual for him to be outhustled & we were bellowing at him to pass.

Anyway, fearing the worst in the replay.

So, the only time we've got anything at Liverpool was that Mooney-inspired win in 1999, and the only time we've got anything at Everton were the two draws in the Pozzo era (opening game of 2015/16, and the draw that was so agonizingly nearly a win this season)? Have we ever beaten them or taken them to a replay away in a cup competition?
