I read this as Kevin Phillips.... Until I looked again. Not sure what that says about me but I did wonder about 'young' as a description...

KP was a great value signing, wonder what wed get for £10k these days?!

Think he's in the Gomes mould of a good shot-stopper but poor distributor. Certainly not as good as the Gomes of a few years ago, but roughly on a par with him now I guess

Could do a job. Never really given a chance in the prem.
Seriously I'd prefer to see him on the bench to Success.

We already have the oldest average PL starting XI - the three of them would be a step in the wrong direction. I doubt any of them could last more than a season of regular football at this level and I doubt they'd accep a year only contract from us.

Moreno is a good shout, and supposedly he was only on £40k p/w at Liverpool, but I wouldn't be surprised if he received higher offers from elsewhere than what we might give.

We've got enough "could do a job" attackers. The fact that Vydra had even less of an impact at Burnley than Gray did surely speaks volumes. That's two PL clubs now that've had Vydra on their books and hardly deemed him worth playing, just forget about him, please.

Leeds players have been discussed elsewhere in the transfer section; from what I've seen of them this season he wasn't one of their most impressive performers. Seemed to keep things a bit too simple, and didn't look quite at the level of Doucs, Capoue or even Chalobah. Norwich are supposedly keen on him, and that seems about right. I think there would be better options for us out there at CM.

Another one from the Belgium league, Wesley of Brugge. I'd thought about mentioning him before as he looked very impressive for them in the Champion's League, scoring 2 goals in 6 appearances, but then saw he'd been linked with clubs such as Arsenal, suggesting he might be out of our reach. However, turns out he's now being linked with Newcastle, so.
Has everything required to be a very good all-round number 9/lone striker, good in the air, quick, can hold off defenders and pick a pass, and a good age at just 22.

He said after the final league game this season that he wants to leave in the summer, and his preference is the Premier League.

I though the issue was he could attack but not defend - we have enough of those already !

No, we have enough back up "couldn't do a job" attackers in Success and Penaranda.
As I said I'd prefer to see him coming off the bench than Success and he would be dirt cheap after a wasted year at long ball Burnley. I wouldn't see him as a new £20m star striker, but as a £5-8m upgraded back up desperate to succeed.
With strikers the question always remains who will we sign for £20m or less who has a proven goalscoring record at this sort of level. There is no-one so it will be a couple more Okaka/Oulare gambles hoping that one of them comes off. I don't think that Cucho or Stuparevic(?) will be ready to start in the prem next season so it may well be TD/Gray/Success again....I'd swap Vydra for Success !

Success doesn't really get any minutes as it is, so it would be utterly pointless (and half the time he gets is more on the wing). Gray is currently our super-sub striker who we regularly see "coming off the bench". Vydra wouldn't be any more use than Gray, so it would still be a total waste of "£5-8mil" which would be far better served contributing to finding a striker who is an upgrade on both Gray and Deeney.

Maybe he can't defend well enough for Liverpool, I'm sure it's good enough for us. Overall I'm sure he'd at least be a like for like replacement for Holebas in terms of overall quality, and he'll be 100% better than Masina.

We won't be signing a striker for big money who is an upgrade on Deeney & Gray !
Success is getting some minutes and we need a back up if a striker is injured. We have been incredibly lucky with injuries this season. If Deeney or Gray or GD are injured for a month or two we are relying on Success and Pen to make an impact from the bench. Neither are capable.

As much as we have all the bluster about needing a striker the cold facts will point to us not getting one....

We will want a decent fee for Gray to recoup what we spent. I doubt many would part with the cash.
Deulofeu scored at a good rate at the back end of the season.
Deeney is the untouchable captain who is well in with Gracia.
Success signed a new 5yr deal not long ago.
    Cucho maybe coming in.
Lukebakio did brilliantly in the Bundesliga and is due back.
Even Cassidy had a good season as the youth team reached the FA Youth Cup semi’s.

I’d be quite surprised if the club signed anyone in that dept. It’s easy to say what we’d do - but it’s not Football Manager. What we have already isn’t easy to walk away from in terms of contract length or wages.

It will only be different if Gray forced a move (unlikely given his post-Cup interview), Deulofeu sulks about wanting a bigger club (think we’d block the move) or Deeney is somehow usurped as captain (but who takes on the wages? The Leicester fascination with him has gone away).

Any decent money we have should be going on CB’s as an absolute priority.

Cucho won't come in for at least another season, not least due to work permit issues.
Lukebakio is not a number 9.
I pray to GT that Deeney reverting back to being dreadful at the end of the season will see him being dropped again, as he briefly was by Javi at the end of last season and at times in the beginning of this.
Cassidy still has a long way to go, even if he'll ever be ready.
Success is also not a lead the line striker.

I doubt Wesley would cost any more than £15mil, and I reckon could easily usurp both.

Less than a goal every 3 games at 22 in the league that suggested Oulare would become a star ? Sounds more like another reasonably cheapish punt than a likely prem starter next season.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t disagree with much, if any of this. But I’m just pointing out that every summer we point out that these big changes need to be made but they rarely are. Because it’s not financially prudent to do so.

At the ‘At Your Place’ event, Giraldi said both Lukebakio and Cucho would be assessed this summer and will stay or go dependant on if they are needed for the year ahead - the idea last summer was for Cucho to get one more year on loan and then come in. It’s not as cut and dried as you say I’d suggest.
Lukebakio may not be a No.9 but he has been played as a striker. I doubt Gracia will change tactics much next season and he fits into our side in the same position he’s been playing at Dusseldorf.
What you say about Deeney may happen - but I think it’s a personal wish, rather than what will happen. As long as he’s captain, he’ll play. Being instantly reinstated after suspension tells me he’s Gracia’s first choice striker.
Cassidy may not be ready - but I suspect he’ll be considered for a few minutes over the summer.
I agree completely about Success and think the club should cut their losses on him before his stock falls further as I think it will. But the length of his recently signed contract may be a factor.

We can of course do some sterling work in the market to allow us to strengthen our strike force - I just think as the land lies, conditions point to it being unlikely, regardless of what I or other fans think to the contrary.

Well to be fair: Lukebakio is unproven. Kabasele is poor in my view. And Jan Lohman is Dutch.

I saw the highlights of Bruges' group stage CL games vs Atletico, Monaco and Dortmund and he caught my eye on a few occasions in those, looked a general handful. Scored in each of the games against Monaco as well (albeit they're quite poor). Also scored one of Bruges' two goals at home to RB Salzburg in the Europa League.

His goals per minute in the Jupiler League was actually 225 - so more like a goal every 2.5 games. He also got an assist at basically the same rate as well. Sure, these stats aren't exceptional, but they're solid, especially for his age, and shows his all-round play is good - he is useful not just as a finisher like Gray, or a hold-up/flick-on merchant like Deeney, but he can do both roles well as a lone front man, which is the main thing we miss as it forces us to always play 2 up top.

He just looked to me like a player ready to kick on to another level. Maybe it'd take him a few months to adjust, but he'd be ready to be a starter sooner than any of our other striker prospects and I think his upside is very high. If he can already hold his own in the CL I'd say that already puts him ahead of any of our current lot.

I'm not dissing your considered view but I'm just nervous about signings from the Belgian League. It seems pretty easy to look great in that league, similar to the Scottish Prem, ....and his stats aren't great in that league... Might be worth an Oulare type punt but if we really want an immediate upgrade on TD & AG I don't think he's the man yet.

It's understandable to be nervous about signings from the Belgian league, and he would be a bit of a punt, sure, but certainly not as much as Oulare was - he's already shown more than Oulare ever did before we signed him. For one thing, Oulare hadn't even scored 10 goals in his whole senior career, let alone in one league campaign. Nor did he score in

It would be great if we could sign someone guaranteed to be an immediate upgrade on Troy and Gray, but there are very few of those around and would likely cost far more than we would ever pay. Out of all even half feasible forward signings that are already PL proven and therefore not be much of a risk, I can only see Mitrovic, and possibly Batshuayi. However, it's incredibly unlikely we would get either. Therefore, pretty much any striker we sign will have some degree of risk attached to them as they'll be coming from another league.

I have hope that after the near signing of Fran Sol last summer that we are still trying to find the right striker to gamble on who is capable of becoming a new target man, and I haven't seen many other players in Europe's main leagues who could fit that mould, be realistically attainable, and with as much possible upside as this guy.

PS on a random tangent, I just saw that Fran Sol ended up getting sold to Dinamo Kiev in January for just €3 million; perhaps the Pozzos were right to dodge that bullet at the last minute.
