Well my son and I got a result - the waiters (all gooners) in the restaurant in Chinatown on Saturday evening upgraded our order of a quarter crispy duck to a half crispy duck as starter. ANd come to think of it our orders of barbeque looked much bigger than usual.

Hadn't really thought of that, good point. I'd like Mariappa to stay honestly, he's one of the few links we have to the pre-Pozzo era, and he's one of us, but I certainly don't want him being a regular Premier League starter, we should give him the role Britos played this year (ie playing in cups against lower league opposition, only in the Premier League in case of emergencies). Cathcart has had a decent season overall but his form has nosedived considerably, at this stage I wouldn't be upset if he loses his place in the team at all.

We should absolutely do our utmost to keep Deulofeu, he may go missing sometimes but he's by far out most likely player to come up with something special. Don't think he even did that badly on Saturday anyway. Pereyra can go, he's had his moments with us, but ultimately has been a bit disappointing considering the hype around him (for reasons not entirely of his own doing). I've enjoyed his good moments here, cursed his bad ones, but ultimately if he wants to go back to Italy I can't blame him

On the plus side, our 'best' players won't get a look in from the top teams after that performance.

On the negative side, I want half of those 'best' players to fark off

On the basis of one mauling against the best ever English top flight side and one of the best sides in Europe? That’s harsh.

Just out of interest, who would you consider to be the best players, and which half would you gladly see “fark off”?

Mostly an exaggeration to be honest but there are some that need to go.

For example, I think it would be fair to say that Pereyra leaving wouldn't be such a shame after such a poor 2nd half of the season.

Don't get me wrong, he has had an important contribution to our season but if he can only handle half of a Premier League season, it would be wise to cash in and replace him with someone with similar but a more consistent quality.

You say that, but it's only just over 3 weeks before the new fixture list comes out, only 5 weeks before Wolves play their first Europa League qualifying match and 6 weeks to the day before pre-season starts for Watford.

    1. I think it will have convinced players like Delofeu, Doucs and Peryra that they will never win anything here so they may as well **** off to somewhere where they won't win anything either, but get paid more.
    2. I think it was the end of the road for some (Mariappa, Cathcart, Gomes) - I agree pretty much 100% with HB's list of players we need to get rid of this summer
    3. It may persuade the Pozzos to fund replacements (best case) but it may also indicate to them that the gap is so huge there is no point in slinging more money at it (worst case)
    4. It meant I didn't need to get a tattoo

We will never bridge the gap. They would be very very happy with 11th every season, understandably. That Final won't have made an iota of difference to their plans for this summer, other than that recruitment would have been a little easier with the carrot of mini-Europe.

I agree with most of your list but what I find strange, and you’re not the only one who has said this, is the willingness to sell Lukebakio. I watched our pre-season games last summer and he looked good then, a part from that one header he missed from about 4 yards. I was surprised to see him shipped out because he was by far our best player during pre-season. Then he goes to a terrible team in Germany and bags himself 14 goals and 3 assists in all competitions (10 in the league). Scores a hat-trick against Bayern, scores against Dortmund and has finished the season as one of Fortuna’s best player. A team tipped for relegation and he helped them finish 10th. I want to see him in a watford shirt next season.

Kabasele and Sema we need to keep as squad players.

Then there is Foulquier. Again another player I would like to see in our squad. Helped Getafe qualify for Europa, nearly the CL, and people want to toss him to the side. Granted he has played mainly as a RM this season but his best game was when he played at RB. He’s been used this season to play LB, CB and CM as well. I agree to sell Janmaat but why spend money on a replacement when we could potentially already have him on our books.

    Penaranda needs to stay too.

isnt it the case that lukebakio has said he never wants to play for us? I'm sure someone said that on here. I might have dreamed it admittedly.

He's been quoted from in the foreign press showing little love for Watford or the thought of returning. His agents seem particularly keen to engineer a move, so they can have their cut.

    Why ??

  23. hornetboy1

    hornetboy1 First Team Captain

He doesn't want to play for Watford, by all accounts. When I watched him for us, he looked lightweight. Some players are better in other European leagues. It suits them better. I think he's one of those, plus we will get a decent sum for him.

I have no problem in keeping Kabs, but not if it blocks an incoming CB. With Prodl, Britos going plus Kaboul already gone, we are down on numbers with CB's. We've got through an entire season pretty much with only 3 three CB's. If the club can afford two Premier League CB's plus, Cathcart, Mapps and Kabs, then I'm fine with that.

Sema is a great personality to have around the place, but he's not really at the level we need. But he is very affordable, so if he's willing just to play a bit part, in an emergency, then I have no problem with keeping him as well.

You have to be careful though, as all these "backups" mount up, take a salary and contribute very little. As a club, Watford cannot afford too many passengers.

I would also add another name to the frame and that's Gray. This is purely for financial reasons though. I think he's good enough from the bench, but can the club really afford the luxury of the record signing and highest wage earner being a bench player? He's good enough for the squad, but we're paying through the nose for it.

To be fair, as much as he hasn't helped himself since signing for us, we haven't managed him well neither, sending him here there and everywhere when he could stayed in one place in Spain, got citizenship earlier and been able to come to England. Would like to see what he can do with a pre-season under his belt

A little harsh to judge him on 20 minutes against West Ham(?)
His agent is doing what all agents do, drumming up interest in their client. I would at least like us to take a look at him unless somebody offers us silly money

I'm not sure. He's done nothing for the last 3 years ? Couldn't get a game in Italy, Spain (2nd time) or under Gracia. Need to loan him out somewhere where he can get a full season under his belt and rebuild his career. Wouldn't do him any good to hang around here for another year.

Probably more consequences for city. They are already in trouble over FPPP. Many thinking they are too dominant and if their success continues for much longer that thinking will grow

Because you don’t just throw away a 21/22 year old with bags of potential who is trying to find his feet in a foreign land, learning a completely different language, away from family, all whilst getting to know his team and head coach for the first season.

  29. hornetboy1

Maybe, but I saw him in the pre-season games too. It's just the general impression I got from seeing him. But you have to have players wanting to play for the club. He's been quoted on numerous occasions that he doesn't want to come back, so for me, that counts him out.

  30. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

Largely agree with that, although I don't think we should get rid of three right-backs if we can avoid it. Gomes we should definitely keep around the place in some capacity if we can even if he retires as planned. Would sooner get rid of Kabasele than even Mariappa, though I wouldn't be opposed to keeping him as 4th/5th choice with Britos and probably Prodl off in the summer. Have absolutely no idea on Foulquier, Lukebakio and Cucho, they'd add to the squad, but I'm not sure if they want to be here, in which case it might be better off getting as much as we can for them

I just did a quick google because I remember some news or some comment from somewhere that he said he didn't want to return - but having looked, I can't find it? Any have any idea? All I've found were this comment...

Watford midfielder Dodi Lukebakio wants Fortuna Dusseldorf to be his last loan club.
The youngster has enjoyed an outstanding season with Fortuna this term.
And he said, "I do not like that at all. It really bothers me, because it was never my intention. It proves that I do not control my own future.
"I want to stabilise myself and play for a club that suits me well, who often has the ball and where I can enjoy my freedom."
Since 2016, the 21-year-old has also been under contract with RSC Anderlecht, RSC Cherleroi and FC Toulouse.

From what I have read in other articles, he certainly backs himself as a talent. And maybe a swagger of arrogance is good. But he also needs to be respectful and some of the comments from himself and his manager in Dusseldorf suggest he's over-confident.

I can’t find a single article where he is quoted stating he wants to leave. Granted I didn’t go past page four on google. The only articles I could find were the ones saying Schalke, Dortmund and Leipzig want to sign him.

Obviously if he has come outright to the press, declared he never wants to play for Watford and wants to be sold in this window, then sell by all means sell him. I just can’t find where he has said that.

  33. R4E

He's never said it as far as I'm aware. It's all hinted in foreign online news reports... He's "thought to have wanted to stay in Germany" or "was unhappy at not being given a chance at Watford" etc. All planted by his agent who probably sees Lukebakio as the type of player he can move around every 18 months for a fresh bit of commission.

  34. hornetboy1

I thought it was common knowledge. I know I’ve read many things in the past that’s alluded to him wanting to stay in Germany and doesn’t want to come back to Watford. He didn’t like how we treated him.

  35. UEA_Hornet

There's a Lukebakio thread on the Team Bus forum which has some of the articles on it. Depends what you want to read into them and the motives of the person talking to the press.

For example, these are his own comments. He didn't want to stay and fight for a place in the team last summer and forced a loan move instead:

    http://sportwitness.co.uk/bad-choice-special-player-unhappy-watford-transfer/

I'm happy to give him the benefit of the doubt but it doesn't seem like he's going to return this summer keen to earn his place in the matchday XI. Implies he doesn't trust Javi. He thinks he's already made it. So if someone offers silly money we'd be wise to take it in my opinion.
