I'm actually quite shocked by this, but Watford ARE officially the 7th best team in the Premier League. The fact we're not 7th is down to our lack of ability against the top six. But the table below shows we smashed it.

    .........……...….....P..W..D..L..Pts
    Watford...….....25..13..8..4..47
    Everton...……..26..12..6.. 8..42
    Bournemouth 25..12..6..7.. 42
    Wolves...……...26..12..5..9.. 41
    Leicester City. 26..12..5..9.. 41
    Newcastle...….25..10..9..6.. 39
    West Ham......25..11..4..10. 37
    Burnley...…….26..10..5..11..35
    Cardiff City....26...9...4..13..31
    Crystal Palace 25...7.. 9..9..30
    Southampton 25...7...9..9..30
    Brighton...…..26...7...7..10..28
    Fulham...…...25...7...5..13...26
    Huddersfeld.25...3...5..17...14

Looking at our goals for and against, this is also quite revealing. We scored 43 of our 51 goals in 25 matches against the rest. Only getting 8 against top six. But defensively this is probably the biggest reveal. We conceded 27 in 25 games against the rest, which is very respectable, but a dreadful 28 in just 12 games against the rest.

It's clear we've got to dramatically improve against top six opposition. Most teams around us are averaging 10-12 points. Leicester got 10, Everton 11 and West Ham 12. Wolves got an incredible 16 points against top six.

Only the three relegated sides, Fulham, Huddersfield and Cardiff did worse against the top six than us. Even Southampton and Palace obtained 8 points each against the elite this season.

We picked up just 3 points against the top six, and that was in our first test of the season. Since then we lost the remaining 11.

If we beat West Ham and Wolves lose at Liverpool, which is possible and probably likely, then we'll finish just 4 points behind them. Just one win and a draw. Just a small improvement, whilst maintaining what we've already got.

Good analysis. It's a shame we've been so awful against the top 6 teams. We're where we are because we've been excellent against the rest only. Whereas Wolves have done well against the rest but been exceptional against the top 6.

    The current position is:
    • 9 points better than this time last year (50 vs 41). This is 3 points worse than after the last game.
    • 12 points better than the comparable fixtures last year (50 vs 38). This is the same as after the last game
    • 11 points better than the '40 point' line (50 vs 39). This is 1 points worse than after the last game.

Nice to see we've kicked on and the form vs comparable teams has improved slightly looking a the gradient.

This puts the Wolves success into some perspective. Gaming the system or not with their super agent, they are not simply buying success with bottomless pockets.

    Fair play.

I believe we actually finished on 53 points but "someone" didn't want to have to increase his "y axis" again.

True. The analysis doesn't include transfer fees but I don't believe they paid any spectacular fees.

So 1984 was the only other season we had 50 points after 38 games. We also finished 11th, reached the FA cup final and had our left back sent off the week before the final. All sounding strangely familiar.

Amazing! So it’s nailed on for a creditable 2-0 defeat, then?
