Ever since we became trophy contenders, I’ve lost the ability to care about boring mid-table merchants like Everton and even our perennial rival from the south coast.

Agreed - we are more Arsenal and City now then plebian also ran no mark teams like Palace, Bournemouth and Everton.

Won’t be long before we are threatening the top 4

I admire the owners generosity in trying to build the club but his lack understanding of football is going to lead to him losing a lot of his money without any trophies to show for it.

Our whole 1st team cost only slightly less than Siggurdsson or Richarlison.

Maybe the Big 8 or 9.

Let’s check in a couple of weeks.

There's no way I'm clicking a link from that paper, but from the words in that link I'll assume it's the Richarlison/Barca story from last week.

No chance - for a few reasons

    1) He isn't good enough to play for Barcelona. Maybe he will be one day, but he certainly isn't right now.
    2) There's no way Barca would pay the money we would want. After paying 40 odd million for him, to sell him after a year, you'd be talking probably quite a bit in excess of £70m (and TBF his return of 13 league goals is pretty good this season - only Mbappe and Jovic who are 21 or under have scored more than him in the top 5 leagues, I believe, so we would be justified on this)
    3) The Silva thing - I'm genuinely not convinced the lad is mature enough to think he can play for another manager just yet.

He's an odd player. His skill set is unusual for the position he plays. Quick without being lightning quick. Doesn't really dribble past people. Not especially creative. But he's hardworking, really physical, good in the air, a total nuisance and has a great knack of getting into goalscoring positions. Even what he brings to the table isn't the sort of skill set you'd expect Barcelona to want in their team.

Overall, he's been worth the money we paid (don't think many people thought that would be the case last summer), but he's miles away from being the finished article and the level that Barcelona or Real Madrid would want.

Absolutely. If they decided he was the one they want, there isn't a great deal we could do about it other than make sure we get a good price.

Far bigger clubs than us struggle to keep their best players when Barcelona come calling.

A small part of me wonders whether this is linked to the Andre Gomes stuff - we are negotiating with them about a permanent deal for him, so perhaps his name has come up in conversation

It would have to be £60m+ just to get Everton to the table. He is not a value buy, but does not (yet) have the ability to be at a top club.

It would be a very strange time for him to move to a club like that.

Not sure if he'll ever be at that level. More Bebeto than Romario.

    Good to see you, TB.

    One q.

Is Richie Boy good enough or not?

You say he’s not but then cite data that he is (top 3 in Europe for his age group).

He’s done very well this year but I suspect he’s well short of Barca level.

He’s a persistent & aggressive trier but he lacks finesse.

Man U would be improved by him but Citeh would not.

  14. Jumbolina

    Jumbolina First Team

Yes he was. But Barca opted for Romario.

Depends what you mean by "good enough". Good enough for Everton? Absolutely. Good enough for Man Utd? Probably. Good enough for Barcelona? No.

That's not to say he'll never be good enough for them. I like him a lot, he's much better than I gave him credit for when he was at Watford. He could eventually be a 20 goals per season player. The goals he's scored this season at the age of 21 and the scope for progression make me think he's potentially a really top player, but there's a level of player that Barcelona require which transcends "top player", it's the absolute elite. For all my optimism about how good he might become, I still think it's unlikely that he will ever reach the Barcelona level. Hope I'm wrong.

For what it's worth, we had Deulofeu at 21 and I was probably more inclined to think that he would eventually be Barcelona level at that time than I am about Richarlison now. With Geri, what became evident was that he lacked the desire and willingness to put all that talent to best use. With Richarlison it's the opposite - I don't think he's got the natural talent Deulofeu had/has, but he has desire in bucket loads and it's often that focus and willingness that turns a good player into a great one.

Sounds like that Lewis Swarez guy Barca are actively looking for a long term replacement for.

You've probably seen as much of him as I have, do you think he's potentially Suarez level? I can see similarities in the aggression and workrate, but not sure Richarlison has the same sort of God-given talent Suarez has

I think he has a lot of the same attributes as Suarez albeit require development. I could see Richarlison at Barcelona. They like a striker who can play wide as well.

However, I don't think they'd spend big on him until he had a big season in the PL. They'll have bigger fish to fry this summer.

At home they seem to have found their mojo.

Mind you probably think if only they'd turned up before Xmas and still had some iffy results on the road.

Typical Everton really - doesn't really matter who they have playing for them or as manager they'll be top 10 with a few "ifs and buts"

Richarlison seems to have done pretty well for them in all fairness goals wise and lasted a whole season!

He's definitely had a bounce recently, so he'll probably get an offer from abroad in the summer & will leave them. Doing what he always does.

We've been pretty good since you beat us in all honesty. Think we are 4th in the form table since then. And we had been pretty good until we played you before Christmas. It was the bit inbetween which killed the season. He's easily done enough to get another year. Football has improved a million per cent, goal difference is loads better than last season and we will finish on more points too. Just probably wont finish any higher than we did last season.
