  2. I don't understand why you think Gomes is such a worse 'keeper than Ben, or why you don't think Ben could do with a break. Gomes is a better 'keeper in some situations, and Foster in others; and Foster has shown signs of tiredness and suspect judgement in his recent games, leading to three goals that would have had people calling for Gomes to be dropped if he'd conceded them. Ben is in the driving seat because he can better sustain a full season of brilliance, not because he is a significantly better 'keeper. Gomes has made many more unsaveable saves than Foster. At his peak, which I believe he is still capable of achieving if not over used, he is the better of the two in my opinion.

Take the league seriously with Foster, take the cup seriously with Gomes.

Javi will not select Gomes if he thinks it will reduce our chances of winning. Have some faith in both of them.

Foster will play if Gomes is not up to it and rightly so. Don't count on Gomes not being up to it though.

I feel the same about 1984, but our lack of enthusiasm for the cup on 2019 is as much about the fact we are now old and jaded as anything else.

My one and only problem with gomes is I think foster is much the better keeper and his displays this season have been stellar. Gomes weakens us, especially his distribution. My heart is in my mouth every time a player plays it back to him...

    Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!
Where have I said he's "such a worse 'keeper than Ben" ? It's not a case of whether Gomes is "up to it". It's not a case of whether Foster is "a significantly better keeper".
It's simple. Pick the best keeper, no matter how much better one is over the other. If you think Gomes is better pick him. If you think Foster, then pick him. It doesn't matter how much better one is over the other, just pick the best keeper FFS ! I believe Foster is the best keeper so i would pick him for our biggest ever match !

  5. Cool. I'd pick Gomes then.

You are not being honest about your argument though. You are not accepting that other people believe Gomes is an equal or better 'keeper than Foster. You are saying Gomes is not good enough compared to Foster, and that is a fair opinion. But then you FFS other people's opinion.

If you merely want a discussion, you can leave it at that, but rather than state your opinion, you are attempting to persuade people they are wrong, and put forward poor arguments that prove nothing except that it is just a matter of opinion.

I’ve followed most of what you have posted to be fair as it has a sense of logic (if questionable). This is a walk in the park compared to your Brexit posts.

I've absolutely accepted that others might think Gomes is better than Foster.
I've only said they are wrong to choose Gomes for any reason other than ability. The FFS applies to anyone who does.
I've not said they are wrong to choose Gomes if they think he is the better keeper but I've made it clear that I believe Foster is better.
    OK ? Cool ?

Perhaps the reason the squad is so strong right now is because the manager keeps to his word and is totally respected. If he said Gomes can play in all cup games this season then so be it.

They are both excellent keepers and I am sure neither of them would let us down on the day.

It seems that Ben is happy to stand aside for Gomes , but at the end of the they we must put our trust in Javi, he has not let us down so far and he sees them everyday in training not us, I am sure it will be his head not his heart that that influences his decision, but whichever one he picks, the other must be on the bench not Dahlberg as his time will come.

  11. Ah. The root of the problem.

Fear of change and risk aversion. I wonder if the leavers are more open to Gomes than the remainers?

Judging by the likes you got there could be something in that. No offense intended. Just an observation. I didn't bring up Brexit.

Voted Foster (even though it will never happen).

They'll press high and Foster is better with his feet.

I get that Javi doesn't want to upset the squad. But he upset GD and look how that turned out.

I'd bring Gomes on for penalties if it gets that far, and if not, play him in the final game of the season where his foot skills won't be so important.

Not sure if this was a "who should play?" or "who will play?" vote as the answers are different.

I think he’s prone to a mistake but I think Kabasele is better than Mariappa on the whole.
Deulofeu is better than Gray but he had earned his start on Saturday - and it worked to devastating effect.

The point being that the best players in terms of ability aren’t always best for certain game scenarios. I think it’s brilliant that we now have a strong squad and not just starting XI and I really don’t have any concerns when certain players are swapped and dropped. There has been no dissent to that this season from any player

Gomes has been immaculate this season in ‘cup’ scenarios. Yes, Foster is a better GK in terms of ability. But football teams are not picked exclusively and only on that aspect - maybe Foster is mentally weak in playing one-off cup games? Maybe Gomes excels in that scenario? I think Gracia has shown understanding of those types of things, proved it and therefore I really don’t understand the clamour from certain quarters to change. In season’s gone-by, players overlooked like Gray, Chalobah, Kabasele have been at time this season would be revolting through agents and social media. That doesn’t happen anymore and I think it’s singularly down to Gracia’s methods - and they aren’t to be taken lightly when saying we should simply play Foster because he’s a better GK.

If we're still going for 7th in the final game of the season people will think it's just as/more important.

I tend to agree with you, but goalkeepers are picked exclusively on their ability. Its different for outfield players.

Some outfield players may be technically inferior to others but work better as a part of a team, or with certain tactics, but that's not the case for goalies. They are on their own. One goalkeeper is either better than another or not. There is nothing else to consider. Foster is a better kicker, shotstopper, cross taker, communicator. Everything. The only thing gomes beats him on is being a character. But unfortunately being a character doesnt win you trophies.

I suspect our entire squad is aware of this fact so would have no problem whatsoever with the better keeper being picked. To suggest the morale of the squad would disintegrate and be replaced by rebellion, chaos and anarchy is risible.

I wouldn't say it's about importance of match, unlike others. I think that we need more calmness in our kicking against City, who press really high up and try and win the ball from you in your own half.

The plan is going to be clear. Long balls over the top, into the channels and onto Deeney's head. We're going to need great accuracy and calmness at the back.

I trust Gomes to do a job against any team. But it's probably the number 1 match where the best parts of Foster's game most outweigh the best parts of Gomes'.

Foster has only ever lost 1 match in goal for us in any cup competition.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/4565044.stm

For the record, in 2005/6 he never played in any League Cup match but did play in our FA Cup 3rd round loss v Bolton.
In 2006/7 played in one LC match, beating Hull. He played in most rounds of the FA Cup but did not play in semi-final loss against Man Utd.
This season, he's not played in any cup match.

Although strictly not a cup competition, he played in all of our play-off matches in May 2006 without conceding a goal.

Only if you could make it stronger ? E.g if Doucs had been suspended for the SF would you exclude him from the final ? All comes down to a poster's view of what the strongest team is.

    Head says Foster
    Heart says Gomes

I was concerned Gomes might lack match practice on Sunday and I didn't agree with decision to play him - for the same reason I believe he should have played against Palace in the QSF season (plus he was a far superior keeper...)

It's rare to have such love for both keepers, and on Sunday I was reminded how much I love Gomes (having focused on the Ben love this season).

Both have emotional ties to the club m and neither will just go through the motions which other players might.

It would be a hell of a story if Gomes won the FA cup in his last professional match

You say that but the key thing is it's a nice day out in the sun, a few beers, facepaint for the kids, have a good old sing song, and a chance to say thank you to a few great servants of the the club over recent seasons. I believe John Eustace and Robbo are pencilled in for a run-out for the last 20 mins to say a proper goodbye. Steve Palmer to start in goal.

...and you're forgetting the Herts Senior Cup.

It’s going to be Gomes and we all hope he has a brilliant game and helps us win.

I think the squad back that decision and appear to love him so maybe that adds the tiniest amount of ‘togetherness’ that could help.

But Foster is clearly better and having a great season and I wish the above wasn’t having to be taken into account.

I am truly amazed at how many Premier League standard coaches we have here. Not only PL standard but also have a working insight into into everything concerning Watford. Gino and Gracia especially must be truly grateful to this forum to know who (it's subjective, it's correct, it's not whom) he should pick.
