  1. Thankfully we don't have to pick, and I trust Javi enough to make the decision. I am sure he will not pick Gomes if he believes it will effect our chances of winning. He's in a better place to know than I am.

Yes, 100% sentimentality behind my desire to see him play. But I don't think it will effect our chances in the slightest. Gomes has a fair shout for being the best 'keeper we've ever had. That his skills have deteriated are an assumption you are making based on your insecurities and tendency towards conservatism and fear of change. I have seen nothing that indicates to me that Gomes can't do the job as well as Ben would.

If Ben were injured for the rest of the season I wouldn't bat an eye lid.

But wet your panties if you wish.

  2. I did. You are seriously having a laugh.

Take a look at the view from in front of the goal and just think to yourself at which point Foster would have been able to confidently take it, where he would have had to stand to do it, and how empty the rest of the goal would have been, for a Wolves tap in that would have saved them putting in the cross.

  3. I was paraphrasing you, not quoting you, and the clear message is that Gomes has made far more unsaveable saves for Watford than Ben has.

It was also responding to the clear fact that you were citing Gomes' performance on Sunday as being reason enough to drop him in favour of Foster.

I have no problem with the rest of your argument and have repeatedly said that, so I think it is a bit unfortunate that you are trying to imply that my intention is just to rubbish the Foster for the Final argument.

For the sake of the forum, perhaps we can now disagree to agree on PMs...

I don't think he could "confidently take it". I think he could have moved his feet, come out and punched the ball away before it reached Doherty rather than accept being out of the game from the moment it was crossed. I'd have saved it :).

  5. Then I back your selection for the final.

I don't think there's anything more to say. I'm not implying you are rubbishing the "Foster for the final" argument. I'm implying you are suggesting I'm rubbishing Gomes for the final argument based on his performance yesterday, which i wasn't. Anyway, life's too short, let's move on.

Let me check if I'm free before we get too carried away with this idea. Saves me having to buy a ticket and spending 4 hours on that bloody website.

The FA will insist you still need a ticket. And you can't take in a bag bigger than A4, so best to wear your kit on the tube.

TUT3000 licence costs start at 2 FA Cup final tickets and some large GK gloves smuggled into the ground.

    Exactly.

In fact, the interview edited out the 'Not' with which Ben finished each sentence.

    No chance.

Gomes loves to come off his line to clear things out, punching etc etc. From my recollection, he does so more often than Foster. There isn’t a GK in the world who risks coming for that.

I understand your point about playing the best players - it was made before the S/F and obviously you’re entitled to your opinion - but to claim Foster would have done anything different than Gomes for their goals just isn’t really a fair reflection IMO.

No problem. Being a black lesbian disabled remainer I'm used to being in a minority. (Though I may have just ruined my chances of a call-up to the final).

Start a thread about replacing Mariappa with Kabasele/Britos - you may get more traction with that...

I think that either Chalobah or Cleverly would have tracked back with their man to stop him having a free header into the onion bag.

Gomes to start and play until the first stoppage in play. Bring on Foster. Sorted.

Absolutely, without question, but I still feel, excellent though the cross was, that a great keeper would have made an attempt to play it, but i'm in a minority of one

    Chamberlain.

Only joking. It will be Gomes. If this is to be his Swan Song before he moysee's into the sunset of
well earned retirement - he deserves it. He has been terrific for us these past seasons, never
complained about not being picked, joined in almost all goal celebrations and has etched his name
in Watford Folklore alongside the greats.

Why does Gomes swan song have to be in the (joint-)biggest match in the entire history of our club?

Why not let him play in the last home match to receive his rousing send off?

Can one of the sentimentalists explain this to me? Thanks.

That's a great reason to love the guy but not a reason to play him in the cup final. I think Masina and Britos have not complained about not being picked and joined in the goal celebrations too - do they qualify too ?

Foster is the better goal keeper and to play the better goal keeper would be logical, however we didn’t get here by being logical so Gomes should (and will ) play , and I would rather have Gomes that a lot of other keepers

I suspect that Javi is a man of principal , Gomes has made no big mistakes on the way here so doesn’t deserve to be dropped, it’s harsh on Foster that Gomes will be in goal when we win the FA Cup, but he shouldn’t worry he will be in goal next season when we win the Europa cup.

If Gomes plays and he makes just one mistake we will all think he should have played Foster our best keeper, but if Foster starts and has a ‘mare we will all think he should have stuck with Gomes

Hypothetical question but if we didn’t sign Foster this summer Would Gomes would have played every game this season? Or would we have bought someone else in to be no.1?

I think the view was that Gomes was regressing, so a new number 1 was needed. I think Gomes has earned his place in the Cup Final, but the views of some people on Gomes current ability verses Foster when he is literally about to retire are bizarre. One of the usual suspects was comfortable if Foster was ruled out for the season! Foster being a keeper who has excelled all year. There are some strange posters.

  30. I think he said he wouldn't bat an eye lid if Foster were injured for the rest of the season, in the belief we have adequate cover.

    Are you saying we don't?

  31. Jumbolina

    Jumbolina First Team

I think if Foster had been ruled out early in the season it would have been a disaster. He's been fantastic. I don't think Gomes would have matched some of the performances. I do however think Gomes would have been decent cover. Difference there. Like a Liverpool fan being happy for Origi/Sturridge to cover Mane.

  32. Steve Sherwood played in goal for the biggest match in our history mate. The FA Cup now is nothing compared to what that game was. I'm chuffed to be there in 2019, but in 1984 my mind could barely deal with the reality of it. I'm still seething because we didn't get an 'FA Cup It's A Knockout'.

As you often say, second means nothing, so I don't see why you have a problem with Gomes filling in.

  33. Jumbolina

    Jumbolina First Team

So in 1984 the reserve keeper for Sherwood would have been unacceptable because FA Cup was more important? I'm up for Gomes playing in Final but I have no idea what your point is here?

  34. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

The only rational argument for playing Gomes is if you think he is a better keeper and therefore likely to save more of the on target element of the 25+ shots he will face than Foster.

Anything along the lines of "he deserves it"' "we can't drop him", "hes almost as good", " it's his swan song"' "he has amazing passion", "the players love him" "he won't let us down"' "he was our best ever keeper" is irrelevant.

It's the FA cup final FFS, not a testimonial or meaningless end of season match. It could be the most important game in the club's history. PLAY YOUR BEST 11 !! If you believe that best 11 includes Gomes, then fine, but don't pick him for any other reason.
