The way some are posting you'd think Gomes is a massive downgrade on Foster.

There's very little gap between the two and Gomes would be playing the last professional game of his career if selected. That's the sort of thing that gives anyone added motivation.

Also worth noting that Foster is 36. Gomes is only 22 months older.

Regardless, should we lose in the final it almost certainly won't be down to the keeper.

You really are a bit of a fool aren't you ? Re-read your first 3 paras above ? What are you talking about ? Where have I said he should be dropped because of his performance on Sunday ? I simply said he didnt have much to do and that Foster is a better keeper.

    If 100% fit Gomes.

  4. Well. A poster on here disagrees with you, and he can make that point much better than I can. Please pay attention to what he says. He's a very intelligent lad and I think you should respect his words...

The whole point of the thread you started is to discuss why Gomes should be dropped for Foster in the final, and you used Gomes' performance on Sunday as a being a reason why Big Ben should be preferred.

Undies. I love you. But you are a complete and utter numpty sometimes.

When it comes to Gomes, I am still trying to contemplate the "uncountable unasaveable saves" he has made to help us get where we are today. When Ben catches up with him, wake me up.

They're better than us in every position. Their subs are better than ours. Not a single player in our squad would make their starting 11 (Doucs might manage the bench).

If we don't match them elsewhere (and we don't), the marginal difference between Gomes and Foster isn't likely to matter. What matters is whether or not the team collectively play out of their skins on the day (and whether City decide to show up or not, of course).

We have a more astute manager, a more abrasive number 9, more committed support, the mascot, a more profitable business model, more hunger, a more violent defender (yes, him), an equal midfield pairing, bigger record sales &, now, 4 stands.

    Difficult to call.

We really are in a good position nowadays if our worst option in goal is Gomes!

As of now, I do believe Foster is our best keeper but Gomes is definitely worthy of a shot at it.

At least we can breath a sigh of relief that we no longer have Pantillimon within the ranks. We'd have been knocked out of the cup ages ago if that were the case.

I actually think Javi's hardest test is picking whether Deulofeu or Gray starts. Really tough to pick after Sunday.

So what happens if we manage to cling on to a draw until the 89 th minute and then another ropey Gomes clearance and City regain quick possession score ?

We lose . From a game situation that Foster would have a better chance of stopping because he is a better keeper in the form of his life . In fact several commentators have said that Foster has been one of the best keepers in the EPL this year.

To drop Foster for Gomes , for sentimental reasons , is disrespectful to be thousands of fans who have supported this club through thick and thin in its 138 years of history .

No player is bigger than the club.

What happens if Mariappa gives away an early penalty that Foster wouldn't save but Gomes would?

What if the squad fundamentally disagrees with the decision to play Foster and the team spirit is damaged?

We can play the "what if" game until the cows come home. It's not a very useful exercise.

Ultimately there's very little daylight between Gomes and Foster, ability wise. They both have areas they're stronger at than the other and the marginal difference is, as I said, highly unlikely to be the sole differentiation.

Regardless of who is in goal they'll be good enough, which is all that matters. This isn't an Almunia/Bonham gulf we're talking about.

Why are we debating. Clearly the decision has been made subject only to Gomes fitness.

  17. I wish I could understand your posts. I think it would open up a whole new exciting world of discovery for me.

  18. To drop Foster for Gomes for practical and valid reasons is a no brainer. Team spirit and faith in your players is worth a mint. Your lack of faith is understandable, but it is emotional rather than logical. There has been nothing in Gomes' appearances to suggest he cannot do the job. We know he is capable of the most outstanding saves and has an incredible anticipation when it comes to movement in the box. Aye. Ben makes saves that Gomes wouldn't make, but likewise, Gomes makes saves that Ben would not have got a whiff at. If Ben plays, I'm happy. If Gomes plays I'm happy. I would, however, like to see Gomes play for us in the final.

To say it would be disrespectful to 138 years of fans is really cheap and trashy. I think it is disrespectful of you to impose your opinion upon those thousands of fans, and disrespect their memory by suggesting they would have had the same lack of faith that you show in Huerelo Gomes. You should go down to the cemetery and apologise.

Foster is marginally better and he would always be my preference over the season, but it isn't always about ability, particularly in the Cup Final.

I just wonder if Gomes playing could just give us a bit of an edge, a media focus, a distraction, a potential fair-tale that everyone can latch on to - away from the potenial hiding we could be getting.

I can see Gomes playing, and playing a blinder.

I could also see Foster playing, and dropping a clanger.

I think a fair more important consideration is whether or not our game plan is to sit back, invite wave after wave of attack and hope to keep them out or have a "controlled" degree of enterprise and try and keep them with something to think about at the back.

As I thought. You have done your usual trick when trying to win an argument 424. You argue against what you wish the other poster had said rather than what he did say. Happens so many times. For full effect you have even put speech marks around the words I didn't say and even added a typo for effect :). I haven't said "uncountable unasaveable saves". Just for your benefit, to summarise, I made it clear that I didn't blame Gomes for either of the goals but suggested that Foster is a better keeper and gave examples of how he, as a better, excellent keeper might have stopped one or both of those goals. He might of course have stopped neither. Gomes is a reasonable keeper, Foster is an excellent keeper and has just won an award for his keeping this season. We are in a cup final where we should play our best 11, even if that seems harsh on Gomes. Well at least that's my view. If we lose we can at least say we gave it our best shot. If we concede 2 or 3 goals there will always be that question whether Foster might have saved one or two with one of his "unasaveable" saves.

But we conceded 2 goals on Sunday and I haven’t really seen anyone other than yourself question whether Foster would have saved them?

I watched the highlights again last night (couldn’t help myself!) and watched their first goal with your comments in mind - it’s a devil of a ball in, not a GK in the world is coming for that.

I see people are now peddling a myth that Foster is just a little bet better than gomes. Laughable stuff. Foster is miles and miles better than gomes in every single aspect of goal keeping.

Just admit that you want gomes to play for sentimental reasons and thus are reducing our chances of winning the first trophy in the entire history of our club. There is no need to make up these extraordinary tall stories about them being almost as good as each other.

And anyone thinking the squad harmony will disintegrate if the manager decides to pick his best players is also delusional. I'd say not picking the best players is more harmful. Ben foster can quite rightly be appalled if he's not picked. I wouldnt blame him if he left at the end of the season.

I know most posters here are monstrously obese and have never actually played football for a team, but let me tell you, being dropped for someone clearly inferior to you is unthinkable.

Yes I accept that. The forum is for debate and this thread has served a purpose in that posters have different points of view. Great cross but the time the ball was in the air I think a great keeper could have got to it and punched but no problem if I'm in a minority. I understand those wanting Gomes to play and accept he almost certainly will. I will just be disappointed if that's the case. I feel that we should play our best 11 for what may be a twice in a lifetime opportunity for many of us and I would hate to be left wondering at the end of a narrow defeat. It's not that I expect Gomes to make a mistake, it's just that I feel Ben is more likely to put up the sort of dominant performance that would be required if we were to sneak a win, which is what it's all about !
Some may feel Gomes is as good a keeper as Foster and therefore it doesn't matter who plays. That's a perfectly valid view. I just feel that there are 4 or 5 players who are real key players in the team, not just for their individual performance but for the effect they have on their team mates. Foster, Doucs, Capoue, and this season Deeney and Holebas.
But that's just my view and I've no problem if others disagree.
Personally I'd like to see Gomes tell Foster he must play but it seems the opposite has happened !

I disagree, it seems that Javi has the utmost of respect from the players, a far far cry from the days of Sannino and Mazzarri.

Whatever Javi does for the final, and the PL games in the meantime, the players just go and get the job done without any fuss or dissent.

Indeed. My first instinct at Wembley was that the keeper should be cleaning that out so close to his goal, but after seeing it again on TV it was just a brilliant ball in which was nigh on impossible to deal with.
