It's a roller-coaster of emotions, nothing wrong with that. YES, it's a pen. OH NO, it's being reviewed. YES, it's been given!

Analogous to OH NO, it's a pen. Alumina has saved it. OH NO, it's gone back to Knockaert again. Almunia has saved it again. Cassetti, Anya, Forestieri, Hogg, DEENEY! Only in a slightly more routine way

There’s one misconception some still have on this thread. The referee can not ask for VAR to confirm a decision. VAR reviews all the major incidents that fall under its remit and advises the on field referee accordingly.

I thought it worked well. Didn't take too long, and the people around me all knew what was being checked. No problem with the way it operated, although I would like to see what was being reviewed ………..

I agree with your last paragraph, and overall I hope it's here to stay.

I thought the announcing was rather weird though and as for the penalty review it was kind of exciting in weird sort of way, though I might not have thought that had the decision gone against us.

I read the Premier league have decided that the on pitch official won't go and look at a screen for decisions which we saw happen in the World Cup and in other leagues.

Is that a good move or not?

The penalty was fairly clear cut without needed Oliver to watch on TV but others won't be.

Maybe it's improved. I haven't watched more than 10 mins of rugby for a long time, largely because of the agonising for 5 mins over a possible stud in touch before the try.

Likewise the 3 mins to take a conversion. And then the nonsense at scrums.

The days of Barry John, Gareth & a platoon of pacey Williamses seem a long time ago.

    And I'm English.

Given the reports on Molyneux Mix it seems that at least 50% of their fans were pi$$ed or high as a kite before kick off. Inspired of their club to so the mosaic with bags that doubled up as vomit bags.

If this is true I think it’s great news. Not only does the visit to the screen take even longer, but it puts unnecessary pressure on the ref to change his decision. When VAR tells the ref to have another look it’s clear they think the decision is wrong. Just confirm or change it as in cricket.

I like VAR and look forward to it permanently next year. It will of course evolve and improve over time but it will stop the most ridiculous decisions that have happened to us and all other teams.

Just been used in the Spurs game - didn't think it was handball so justice done with the penalty save .

Yes....I agree. Those accidental handballs cannot be penalties. You'll be getting 5 or 6 penalties per match if that is the case. It could become farcical if it's going to be used in this way.

I thought it worked very well overall.

How refreshing it has been to go through a post match experience without a single debate on offside/onside, penalty/not a penalty, red card/not a red card. Those questions were answered during the match while it still mattered, and neither team is left feeling aggrieved about the decisions of the match officials.

Instead we get to discuss the game itself, rather than what the referee got wrong to change the outcome of the match.

There's a lot to like about that.

I haven't seen it but I understand it has been given as Rose made himself bigger and as a result if it hits your arm it will be given.

All clubs were invited to a meeting and VAR introduction last year by EUFA for the CL and it was made clear to them.

If it’s a ‘really tough decision’ then it’s not a ‘clear and obvious error’ and therefore VAR should take the side of the ref and not overrule.
For me, these things should be looked at by VAR from 2 different angles maximum taking 20 seconds or so, and if they can’t see an obvious error then let play carry on.

Not if I want to have a good old debate at the pub after the game. They'd be nothing to talk about with my mates as we get smashed.

    That's what it's all about.

My guess is most people would just like it to help referees make the right decisions as best they can. (Clearly it would be best if it was not too ponderous and slow).

I think it is a good move as the ref actually leaving the pitch really does hold the game up too much.

The VAR ref is equally qualified and has the technology to help him, so there is no need for the on field ref to leave the pitch IMO.

Is it just me, or wasn’t there an announcement in the week leading up to the games that video replays of VAR incidents were going to be shown to fans for the 1st time?

    That didn’t happen.

EDIT: My error. Just seen that would have only happened if a decision was overturned.

Agree. Only one I wasn’t sure about was the tackle. The coming together of heads was clear what was being looked at. I said to my friend at the time, if they send Holebas off for that there’d be outrage based on walker getting off for a far worse move of the head the day before.

The penalty decision does add to the drama and stress but I don’t think it took too long and the right decision was upheld. I like the fact that it will stay with the ref unless a clear error has been made (at least as clear as is reasonable).

I can see an issue occurring where two seemingly identical incidents are handled differently and the media go into meltdown replaying each over and over whilst wheeling out “experts” to support/slate VAR. Guarantee this will happen within weeks of the start of next season if not before. Could have happened at the weekend had Holebas been sent off for the above incident.

Agree with this. No one around us had any idea what the two red card announcements were about and the highlights ive seen since have only explained one of them - the GD incident

Don't the new rules for next season mean any contact with the arm in the penalty area will be a penalty?

  33. hornetboy1

    hornetboy1 First Team Captain

Apparently so, but they are actually doing it this season as well in the CL. It's a bit of a joke. You'll be getting players deliberately lifting the ball from close range at a players arm and a penalty would have to be given.

I think this rule will be short lived as it will become farcical.

The hand ball penalties are about making your body larger so I can see that reasoning. This is why the Mee penalty was reversed as it was a complete accident.
