Right, I'm going to irritate a few now, even more than usual.
Foster should play in the final because Foster is the better keeper.

I love Gomes as a personality, I love his enthusiam and I get that this would be the perfect end to his career. But we may not be in a cup final again in many of our lifetimes. You have to go with your best team.

I know he "hasn't let us down" but at this level you can't justify picking your 38 yr old pre-retirement reserve keeper simply as he hasn't made a mistake. At this level that should be pretty much a given. You can't "blame" him for either of the goals we conceded, but at this level it's about how many "unsavable saves" your keeper makes. Like the late save Foster made against Fulham. No-one would have blamed him if that had gone in, but he saved it....and countless others this season. Am I alone in thinking that Foster may have intercepted the cross to Doherty for the first goal ? Look how close to the goal line the header was. The second goal, would Foster have got there a little quicker and made himself bigger than Gomes did and so have a better chance of blocking ? Look how narrow Gomes' shape is as the ball passes him As I say I wouldn't blame him for either but I think the very best keepers might have excelled and prevented either or both. It didn't matter and conceding two led to an amazing match. I loved his emotion on the pitch and even the artificial over-choreographed dives following the 2 shots he pushed over the bar.
Despite the noises coming from the players themselves, I would really hope we play our best keeper on the 18th May.

I think if Javi was going to change then he would have done it for the Semi.

Are you bringing in new evidence that wasn't presented when this discussion was had prior to the semi-final?

Foster is the better keeper but Gomes is fine for the final.

The new evidence is that this is the cup final. Literally a cup final. Our last cup final was 35 years ago. Next one, who can say, but we may have to wait another 40 years, anyone over the age of 45 is likely dead by then. Play the best keeper we have who is Foster.

Yep, no chance Foster plays with how Javi's ethos. Even seeping towards Foster, he said on Twitter he'd refuse to play in the Cup final if picked ahead of Gomes! Think he's deleted that tweet tbf though

It's not about the saves, it's all on his kicking for me, they're two fine shot-stoppers. Not that Gomes is horrifically bad with the ball at his feet (he ain't great obviously), but I was so nervous any time Gomes had to kick, was so worried that on the off chance he'd be in any way at fault for a goal, we'd all be saying Foster would have done better, would have been so crushing. So yeah, all things being equal I'd prefer Foster, but given the vibes from them, it looks like it's set for Gomes so I guess I'll have to accept Gomes in goal, which ain't a bad option still

Gomes will play. I don't agree with the thinking behind it, but he will. The decision to leave Foster out is bizarre. If, for argument's sake, we'd signed a striker at the start of this season who'd scored 30 goals would we leave him on the bench to give a forward who was past it and couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo a run out in the final because he's a good bloke? Of course not. Why do the same with the goalkeeper? Gracia Out!!

Gomes was asked if we would be knocking on Javi's door to play in the final.

He replied, it's not about him, it's about the team.

Whilst I would prefer Foster, I have no problem with Gomes playing - he's earned it.

It's not FIFA. Sometimes the best player might not necessarily be the best choice.

I don't think the value of the togetherness within the squad can be overestimated. Gomes is obviously hugely popular amongst the players. His enthusiasm cannot be questioned. Like Deeney, Gomes may not be technically the best but he brings so much more onto the pitch.

I will be happy with either Foster or Gomes in the final. Both are worthy of a place in the team.

    In Javi I trust.

The role of "second string goalkeeper" must be the hardest in football. Normally the reserve goalie is a notch or two down in quality from the No. 1, but there's very little to choose between Foster & Gomes. Gomes has earned his final day in the sun (BUT I'd deffo have Foster on the bench).

The medal allocation is a bit different these days, in as much a the clubs get a total of thirty to distribute amongst the players, so in addition to those playing in the final, those who have featured earlier on should all get one.

Gomes had almost nothing to do on Sunday except pick the ball out of the net twice.
We have maybe a 10% chance of beating Citeh ? To win we would need our defence to be on top form as a unit and our keeper to play a blinder. Avoid conceding from maybe 20-25 shots and nick a goal from maybe 3-5 shots ? I could see Foster playing a blinder under constant pressure, making save after save. I can't see Gomes doing that, not now, at 38.

No problem with people wanting Foster to play, but making stuff up to justify it is just silly.

Not sure - if we play Gomes we'll lost 6-0, if we play Foster it'll only be 5-0, tough choice.

Bit of a bizzare statement ? You think Gomes made some great saves and kept us in the game then ? He was clearly so bored by the routine saves he made that he added a few extra dives for the cameras after each.

  20. Little strange that you say he did little else but pick the ball out the net twice. He certainly did more than that, and was rightly praised for reacting to the deflection off Cathcart's head that was going in at speed.

Your desire to see Foster in the final is totally fair. Your choice to belittle Gomes' involvement in the game on Sunday is just unnecessary, and a little on the offensive side. Gomes was a reassuring presence on Sunday and he did an aweful lot more than you give him credit for.

Make your case for Foster. There's enough good reasons without making up **** or having to belittle Gomes.

While we all know that Foster is the better keeper, we also all know that the point about who should play in the Final is moot.

This. 100%. If Javi has said to the players that Gomes is the cup 'keeper, then he shouldn't change his mind. We don't want the players to be distracted, although realistically it probably won't make any difference ………..

Oh, and I have much more confidence in Gomes than I did in Panty Lemon when he played against the Stripey Nigels in the previous semi final.

Undoubtedly I believe Foster should play in the final.

Not for the obvious reason but one of legacy. If Gomes made any howlers it would mean him leaving on a sour note.

He is a hero now as it is & I 100% want to remember him that way.

I haven't belittled Gomes. I've just point out that he had little to do in the game which I believe is correct, particularly given what will be needed vs Citeh. The 2-3 saves he made I feel were very routine. If you think they were great saves that any average keeper wouldn't be expected to make, then fine.

We're going to lose either way. If Gracia made a promise to Gomes that he was the cup keeper, then maybe it's better for the morale of the squad to play Gomes.

However, as someone who doesn't have to renege on promises etc., I'd play Foster, but promise Gomes that he'd be brought on if it looked like the match was going to penalties.

  31. Without making up **** like he didn't have much to do other than pick the ball up. He had plenty to do, and if you don't recognise that your opinion is compromised. There can be an element of opinion involved, of course, but when it comes down to it such a comment does not deserve respect because a bias is clearly being applied.

Then you make the worthless argument that because he didn't do anything wrong and only made a few decent saves he's not good enough for the final.

You are making nothing arguments and making out they carry weight. You are devaluing your argument because you are relying on the irrelevent to make your case, and ignoring the real arguments that may actually make someone think.

If Gomes is dropped for the final, it will not be because of his performance on Sunday.

No point having this discussion, it will be Gomes.

He has destiny on his side and we will win.

Re the semi, yes he did make saves, particularly good one after a deflection off Cathcart. He played well and if he was dropped it would destroy everything that Javi has built with the team and squad bonding. That cannot be underestimated.

Nor can Gomes performance be underestimated in what is likely to be his last game in the final.

There’s nothing to this debate that hasn’t been said before.

I’m more worried about Mariappa against their strikers. But even then the passion he showed for the win on Sunday has me swayed that he may just be part of something special this season.

The big thing I wanted to see on Sunday was that whoever didn’t play out of Foster/Gomes was on the bench. Dahlberg cannot be thrust into a big Wembley debut if disaster was to strike. That was a bigger concern to me than who started.
