Too eloquent and not full of ****. Is leaving a line of blank text between sentences a MC trait though ? Pads out those boilerplate reports !
Anyway i tracked his business down based on info he gave re a new director's name, and it certainly wasn't a MC business. Prostitution if I remember correctly.....

  8. People who use tech on plane take offs and landings.

Now let me start by saying, I've no idea if they have that much of an impact on plane functionality.

However, if someone asks you to turn it off, then turn it off. Are people so tied to a device that they can't spend a millisecond of a fraction off it?

2 examples on 2 recent flights.

    1. 2 couples of pretty young and seemingly immature eastern Europeans. Flight attendant comes past and at least 4 times says to switch the device off. Each time a second later it's on again. The final time it's begrudgingly turned off with a scowl to the attendant - "who do they think they are telling ME what to do".

    2. A bunch of 4 20-something middle Eastern guys. 1 of them decides to watch a film on his tablet as we are taxiing. Not just watch it, but without headphones so the rest of the plane has to hear it too. 5 times told to turn it off. 5 times it goes straight back on a second later. Attendant gives up in the end and film is watched on take off. As we prepare to land again asked multiple times to turn it off. Same reaction. Watches film as plane hits the runway.

I mean, are people so stuck to devices now that they cant spend 10 minutes off them? And the insubordination that anyone dare tell them to switch it off.

Infuriated me beyond belief. But what can you say. Me and my wife aren't exactly going to tell a bunch of people to do something if the flight attendants clearly can't get them to comply.

Just feel like the youf of today have literally zero respect for authority or safety - whether it be safe or not.

Simple solution is to have them kicked off the flight and then pass the cost of missing the take off slot on to the passengers in question.

Although this always used to be the way, me and the wife flew for the first time in nearly 5 years last month and the advice was you could do what you wanted during takeoff/landing with electronic devices so long as they were in flight mode. Who were you flying with?

I had it explained to me as being a result of how cellular (FFS! that looks like an ancient term now) devices communicate with the 'towers' in each cell using minimal power. I tries to locate a 'base' with a minimally powered signal, if it can't find one it increases the power to the signal and continually ramps it up (the electromagnetic version of screaming) until it finds one. A plane's sensitive navigation signals can possible cope with one or two phones doing this but there comes a point...

I *think* all flight mode does is switch of this process.

I still haven't had a successful explanation of why I've got to switch of a phone in a hospital/surgery other than the fact it's bloody annoying.

Actually doesn't @Meister have a degree in practical and applied witchcraft (or something) extremely pertinent to this discussion?

Mobile phone use in hospitals is more relaxed now but you really wouldn't want to use it in an MRI scanner.

The relaxation for flight mode is useful but the problem now becomes "How the hell do you know if a device is actually in flight mode or not" ? If passengers "can't be arsed" or don't know how to switch the flight mode, the crew would never know.

I guess they're not that fussed. It was Flybe. I just checked their website and they say handheld devices in flight mode are fine in 'all phases of the flight'. Laptops etc have to be stowed for takeoff-off/landing - which implies they're more worried about heavier objects flying around the cabin in an emergency. And Bluetooth devices have to be switched off at all times after the doors are shut apparently. Though I don't remember that last bit being mentioned at all.

I’ve just passed through LHR security.

The official in charge v clearly requested, that is, instructed, everyone to take off their shoes.

One chap blatantly ignored this & sauntered through, despite the stares of fellow passengers.

He went unchallenged & was off picking up his belongings moments later.

My excuse is that I have a bad back. Also good to keep officialdom on their toes.

If they're not fussed, why ask for devices to be switched to flight mode at all ?

No formal qualifications, but I am an amateur warlock.

With my electronic engineers hat on:
Whilst plane's navigation and other electronic systems are robust enough to ignore interference from GSM & wifi devices, I'm told that pilot's radio communications can be affected. Similar to the sort of pulsing interference you get on some audio systems when a mobile phone starts to ring near by. Whilst it's minor multiply that by 20 or 30 phones and it can cause issues with hearing air traffic control.

With my, my friend is a pilot hat on:
It can be bloody annoying having to get atc to repeat themselves, particularly in difficult landing conditions. Also in a rough landings you can get heavy objects with corners flying out of peoples hands.
Air crew are generally tasked with getting everything switched off and put away as they don't have the time or knowledge to ensure flight mode is engaged. Passengers need to be careful and do exactly what the air crew say because if they don't they'll get dragged off the plane once it's landed by big blokes carrying guns, even in the UK, but for god sake don't try it on a US bound flight.
My mate has had cause to divert a plane once or twice due to an uncooperative passenger. I'm told it generally results in a future flying ban, certainly from his airline, and also a large bill and some time locked up. Also the airline if it doesn't want to carry you back doesn't have to and doesn't have to give you a refund either. Good luck getting someone else to bring you home at short notice for sensible money.

It’s once a month to the US, usually NYC.

This time an exotic diversion to Kentucky & Nashville before a trade show in Florida.

I packed in corporate life almost 9 years ago but the project I got involved with became a business.

I enjoy the traveling but, in a way, can’t wait for it to end so that I can devote more time to the forum.

In what could be a major result, the prem economy cabin is virtually empty. I’ll be able to spread myself.

Well, as Rookery Dad's example about airport security proves, the vast majority comply with instructions so it's possible the <5% (?) left are considered acceptable compared to the need to inconvenience all those who abide by the rules.

Flybe seem relatively relaxed in general. Their website even says:

"Passengers may wear headphones at all times during the flight unless instructed by the crew otherwise. It is recommended that passengers remove their Headphones for the Safety Demonstration, though this is not a requirement that will be enforced by our crew."

Premium economy. What an experience. Found myself upgraded a couple of times out of the last 4 or 5 trips home. May have been blacklisted now after my 2 year old lost his mind at his toy vacuum being placed in the overhead for takeoff. Helpful head through the curtain from business a minute or so into the meltdown informing me that I could take him to the back of the plane once the seatbelt sign was off.

Extra leg room was nice. Felt like a huge let down when back with the peasants for the return leg and subsequent trips following the unhappy toddler.

Generic hold music. The electronically generated stuff because the company you're calling is too tight to shell out a proper licence. The one I'm being subjected to repeats every 20 seconds and it's been 15 minutes now.

Also when after a minute or so the music stops, you get a click thinking you're about to speak to someone and it's just an automated message suggesting that your call is important to them. Lying fecks.
