I'm only up to the third episode but really loving Safe.

Yes. Without a doubt. I think her stage show was what she originally took to the Edinburgh Festival which basically 'wiped the floor' with everything else and was adapted for the TV series.

Started brilliantly but became a bit too schmalzy and predictable by the end, however, I guess there needed to he some sort of payoff and resolution.

I love seeing how some reviewers are torn by the obvious quality of the series and their hatred for Gervais. It's hard for them to praise it.

This seems to me to be a massive hit with critics, but it's not as good as MMM for entertainment in my view.

Even though it's got new writers, it seems like old, unevolved partridge, with him making silly noises and talking weirdly for humour, rather than actual comedy in the language.

The March for statues of dogs though was a good idea. It's too close to life to be satire.

An excellent review, RD. I would just take slight issue with one point: I don’t think it’s “not funny” - it has its moments - it’s just nowhere near the standard of Partridge/Coogan’s best work. It’s just too broad, not nuanced enough.

Interestingly (or not), Mrs Keighley was guffawing away at the first episode on iPlayer last night, and she has never been a Partridgophile.

It certainly does have its moments. How could it not? But they tend to be when Alan is the sole focus doing something funny.

MMM was an excellent psychological study of a middle aged man bouncing back from crisis & the ‘story arc’ of his relationship with SS was beautifully sketched out.

From the moment of ‘this is great banter’ to that of ‘never, never, never, never, NEVER do that again’ (the HMRC hoax).

I was musing on this whilst making dinner last night. It was curry so I could give the matter some thought.

Fish tonight so any analysis will be more superficial.

Interesting point. I find it a bit too 'meeja in-jokey' (which isn't such a bad thing, much the same as the very two-halved masterpiece 'The Black Adder' which was three very clever episodes, 1-3, and three very funny episodes, 4-6). You have the whole Alan/Jenny dynamic (Kate Silverton & Philip Hayton 'rumours'), the death of John Baskell (Saville) and how much social media pressure (FFS!) vegan/vegetarian meeja 'talent' are under to be very, very active promoters of it and other 'quackery' (Sarah Pascoe and Thandie Newton).

Bit underwhemled with the whole series tbh. A few vintage Partridge bits here and there but overall spread too thinly and consequently not that funny.

I feel like he’s winning too much in this series. His co-presenter doesn’t pull him up on being weird and inappropriate, he got one over the reporter last week (I think they were arguing about grammar) and he finished the 2nd episode by busting his predecessor for being a sex pest.

Partridge should be a loser, like the first series of I’m Alan Partridge. It’s been the same guys writing it since MMM brought him back, which was brilliant, as was his ‘autobiography’ and the other book Nomad. I think the format may be to blame here, too choppy and they get drawn into a lot of obvious jokes because it’s a parody.

Exactly this - however, I do like it when he scores his victories, however, like you, I noted that he's ending up "on top" far too often.

Whilst Barbara was all taut denim, we mustn’t overlook Margo’s fragrant, chiffony qualities.

American comedy is too often not very funny, and I don't remember watching any of their sitcoms since the days of Home Improvement and Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Indeed, for decades my diet of US humour consisted solely of the Jerky Boys and cartoons.

Thirty years of prejudice have been instantly eliminated however with the utterly brilliant Modern Family. I even found myself still laughing at the previous wry witticism when the next came along.

    Modern family is excellent.
While much US comedy is seemingly humourless, Friends and Cheers were a notable exception. Friends was, and still is, brilliant.

I only realised after posting how old Modern Family is. Guess I'm s bit deprived of western TV here.

    No "Songs of Mother****ing Praise".

Actually what could be a good one (I've only seen ep1 and it was 'alright' - although there are rumours (internet bollox) that it gets a bit shyte after ep4 presumably because they've stopped closely following the original film's plot) is the TV version of Jermaine Clement's (and Taika Waititi's) absolutely farking brilliant film What We Do in the Shadows.

TBTH, and not trying to sound like some 'big girl's blouse', I loved the Beeb's two 're-takes' on gore/horror 'Being Human' (even after the complete change of cast) and the masterful 'In the Flesh' (the was cruelly cut after just 9 eps).

I watched the first episode. Shows that police judging and dismissing victims because they are poor/uneducated/sex workers is nothing new.

The lessons of this case should have been learned and helped protect the likes of the Rotherham abuse victims, but it didn't.

The revamped 'Twilight Show' started last night and one of the two episodes 'The Comedian' has been getting extremely favourable reviews pointing out that 'Black Mirror' has been deposed from its throne of TV goodness...

One to watch out for on Amazon Prime, Hanna. There was a film a year or two ago which was pretty good and this appears to be a series based off it.

About some sort of off the grid trained assassin badass girl. Only 3 episodes in but entertaining. Not UHD through which is disappointing as some of the Scandinavian forest photography deserves it.

It wasn't too upset when the 'fun' Z Nation was finally 'mercied' after its 5th series (1-3 mostly wonderful*, 4&5 very much less so). The team behind it have just had their prequel series 'Black Summer' released and it's very different to the 'original' (much darker) and very, very good (they have used the device of shortening the episode length throughout the season which really ratchets up the tension and dividing each episode into a number of 'episodettes') - although saying that the final one is a bit 'meh' which is probably due to the constraints of leaving an 'open ending' for any future series.

*Zombies destroyed by the world's largest wheel of cheese, zombie/ganja hybrids, a zombie Geirge RR Martin chained to a desk and frced to write the next installment of 'GoT' and some of the sharpest satire about the Trump/Clinton election campaigns I have seen amongst many, many other gems. Some told me it's all on Netflix.

How do you set up for Amazon TV? I want to watch the tennis now it's cleared off from Sky.
I've bought a 'Fire Stick' and put it where my rather pleasant Sky chap told me to!
I want to know what to do before Mr IBB returns home on Wednesday and laughs at my incompetence, again!

You could, if you're feeling devilish, plug it in when the TV is on instead.
