Pies

Yes, the pies where very nice, I had the beef and blue cheese and very nice it was....however the problem was there were no signs showing what was on offer so they had to show you a scrap of paper of what was on offer. Also we should mention good beer from Harvey’s. apart from the football a good ground to visit

 

I try to avoid eating at any football ground. A Crunchie will cost £80, the hot drink is not only undrinkable, it is un-holdable, as well. The plastic fork breaks and you know the pie will burn your fingers and then disintegrate all over the floor at the first bite. You are forced to stand and the last shelf is already occupied by other 'diners'. And the people, my dear, the people...……..Shouting "You'orns" with their mouths full.
I go to football grounds to watch and maybe talk about football, not to eat.
Away travel presents problems - if possible get up to the town early and eat out somewhere. If you can't find somewhere decent a greasy spoon is preferable to a football ground. (But never, ever a MacDonalds).

The pies in the Directors Box at Brentford are sensational.

 

If I was in Falmer looking for somewhere to eat I would go to The Amex for a pie and a pint of the excellent best bitter they were serving (someone enlighten me)*. Went to West Ham, had pie and mash at Maureen's in Chrisp St market. Horrible.

Best pies I ever had at a sporting venue were at The Oval cricket ground, unfortunately I don't know what the brand was but I believe they were made by a local company near to The Oval.

 

Can a pie still be called a pie if it comes in a tin like those Fray Bentos Frankenstein efforts?

 

Used to love them.
As a student it was a traditional Sunday lunch.
We used to have a competition in the house to see who could get theirs to rise the most. Used to pee off my mate so much that I always won. What he didn't realise is I used to sabotage his by running a knife round the edge of his so the steam escaped. He deserved it. He was a lazy arse who never did any cleaning.

Steak and ale was my favourite although they did a chicken curry one for a while which was amazing.

In answer to your question I think it's already been determined that pastry doesn't need to be sides and bottom so as such it does constitute a pie.

 

I *think* that's a description of stewed meat with pastry on top.

When I was at QMUL a lunchtime treat (especially taking foreign staff/students) was getting the bus to Crisp Street Market (All Saints DLR). Just you go into the market there's this place that does stewed eels and its pies were "alright". Inside the market is this place and its pies were consistently (very) good.

 

See my post somewhere above. I went to Maureen's before W Ham and it was just horrible. Nondescript mince beef pie, mash (OK) and liquor (absolutely foul.) Maybe it's gone downhill.

 

When I worked in the city we occasionally ordered in pie an mash.
I was a 1/1/1 guy. But we had one chap we used to call Ted Rogers because he ordered 3/2/1.

Liquor = thin wallpaper paste + parsley + vinegar. I'm sure I saw a box of solvite behind the counter.

 

It *must* have been an off-day as we frequently had to queue to get in at lunchtime. Their Kate and Sidney was always pretty good.

 

There were queues when I went. God knows why.
