I can curl one out after most runs. It shakes down all the ordure from your intestine.

However, I'm not that bad. At least two of my wife's friends have had to go al fresco on runs, as emergencies hit them.

Fortunately I'm so absolutely horrified at the prospect of anything other than a well provisioned pooing environment, that I've never had the urge to poo sans porcelain.

I use map my run. I've used it for years so don't want to lose my track record, though I know many more people using Nike, Strava or Runkeeper.

I also have switched to audio books. I have a few running playlists, full of epic metal and rock masterpieces, but if I'm running 4 times a week, as I'm trying to stick to now, the overlistening to songs makes them boring.

Getting lost in a good book whilst running does make the time fly. The good part is essential though, as otherwise my mind wanders and starts worrying about splits and maths.

I invested in a Fitbit Ionic. Built in gps, music storage and heart rate. Thought it would have everything to enable me to leave the phone at home.

Unfortunately the music storage is not fit for purpose. Mp3 files only, or just recently an option to subscribe to a streaming service call Deezer. I know people who use ITunes, some who use Spotify and some, like me, who use Amazon. I don't know why who use Deezer.

Over time it became more and more annoying, to the point I sold it on EBay for 150 quid less than k paid for it. It's a crap smart watch and a moderate fitness tracker. Better off either having a standard step tracker or a proper smart watch. Prefer my gen 1 LG urbane, which is more or less obsolete tech now, but allows me to skip songs on my phone and view map my run stats whilst my phone is in my fanny pack.

My heart rate used to be at 190 some times during a run. I didn't die and it was happening consistently.

It was obviously strenuous effort, but I could push through, so probably, I just have a high heart rate. I don't know what it is atm as I'm not using a hrm.

What's the rationale behind this Gestapo approach? I understand if routes include roads with traffic, so as to make people aware, but otherwise it sounds like pure jobsworthery.

For the summer 10k run in London two years ago, temperatures reached 26 degrees. I’m not good in the heat at the best of times and I’m always too hot, even in the winter.

My heart rate, over 45 minutes, averaged something ludicrous like 185bpm. I don’t think it was very healthy, but was within my maximum (220- age)

5.05K tonight, 4 minute brisk walk, 3 other walk breaks, did it in 36 minutes. I think its fair to say I should do park run in 35 mins or less.

So what do you runners recommend to drink? Obviously water is perfect right now but is it worth getting some electrolytes in before a run?

Before, water is absolutely fine. During (depending on distance) and after you'll need something else. I use High 5 Zero tablets.

Been doing a few 2 mile runs and bike rides preparing for my first parkrun on Saturday. Hopefully I can get in the 25 - 30 minute bracket but we'll see. A chap I work with has done the 5k in 17 minutes before! Incredible effort.

In my opinion, no. Anything under ten miles I don't use any supplements at all. If it is more than 5k I'm doing then I'll have breakfast first (porridge with honey and banana, a cup of coffee and a pint of water). You'll soon suss out what works for you but for a 5k run some water before and after is all you need. You may also soon be about to discover 'runger' a short while after a run...that is my danger zone and is when I'm most inclined to reach for a Mars bar rather than filling up on good stuff.

First park run completed today at Rickmansworth Aquadrome. Under 31 minutes without stopping so I'm pretty happy with that for #1. I was surprised at how busy it was and that I couldn't get past anyone until well over 1km had gone by, (so should easily beat that time next time out). Really well run event with a little chat for first timers which was appreciated. Was so much more enjoyable running with other people than on my own so I intend to do many more, (when football and building work don't get in the way).

Just been given a ticket for the Bournemouth game as well so a good day all round!

StuBoy, did you get round to doing yours?

Been injured for 6 weeks and only just back running. Marathon in 8 days. Not looking forward to it one bit :(

I had a two week break from running (after 166 consecutive days) and dragged myself out for five miles yesterday. For the two weeks I didn't exercise I felt lethargic and was waking up knackered every day. Just one run back and I have loads more energy already.

Next up the is the Leighton Buzzard half in November. I've also booked Salzburg half in May with a night in Munich afterwards to refuel with copious amounts of beer and meat.

Good work. If you keep doing parkrun I'd recommend a wrist band with your barcode on it. You can get them from the parkrun website, they're about £15 but worth having.

I joined a running club at the start of the year & have really enjoyed the competitive side of local races & has also helped talking to other runners & seeing how they train. I did the Chester marathon on Sunday which was well organised event & after a race this Saturday am taking a few weeks off to rest some slight niggles.

Need some advice after todays park run. Started at a really good pace and felt very good, was just past the 2 mile mark and my heart rate went suddenly very high so I slowed down. Heart rate wasn't coming down then suddenly my left calf just went into what I can only describe as a spasm. After that I couldn't put much weight on it so basically hobbled to the finish. Ended up finishing in 32 minutes but was looking at 27 on the original pace.

So why would my calf muscle go like that? Is it a poor warm up, bad running technique, (I know I tend to run on the front of my feet rather than the heels), lack of electrolytes? The heart rate suddenly climbing then bang also concerns me a bit, though apart from the calf I felt fine.

Any advice will help. If you see someone hobbling towards the match today that'll be me.

OK, so it seems the above was caused by stupidity. Spoke to a couple of the chaps today who run a bit and they put me straight pretty quickly.
Last night a few glasses of wine followed by absolutely no hydration whatsoever this morning was the cause. Calf muscles screamed for fuel, heartbeat raised quickly trying to provide that fuel, nothing being provided. Calf muscles says "f*** you".

Don't drink the night before and seriously hydrate before a run seems to be the fix!

Been running again after recovering from my own stupidity and finished the park run in 29.30 ish. I'm happy with that and if I can get that down by 15 to 20 seconds every week then the 25 minute mark should be reachable quite soon.
What I'm starting to find about the park run is that I'm recognising the people that run around me and can use them as progress markers. It's a very good way of pacing myself as well.

It really depends on your feet and gait. Get yourself down to a running shop who will do an assessment and give you a few pairs to try on that suit you. Only way to get something right for you.

If you're a penny pincher like me, you can memorise the pair and size that you like and suits you best, say "I'll think about it" then go and buy them online for less.

Definitely do this, you could save yourself a fair few quid by looking online when you know what you are after.

Also, be wary of sweatshop now. They've been bought by Mike Ashley and his mob so the top quality service they used to offer has gone firmly out of the window and they try to push you towards Karrimor which in my experience is not a good route to go down for running shoes.

Yup, but not easy. 'Undulating' is the description but there's a fair bit of climbing. Fast downhill finish though. Well worth entering.

  35. Man, I need to do a lot of runs to work off holiday and Christmas. The older I get, the more difficult it seems to be to shift.
