You never, ever used to see Watford stuff on sale in other towns.

Not even in the London tourist tat shops. We didn't even reach that far. ManU, L'pool, Chelsea, Spuds, Arsenal, West Ham etc. - plenty. Hornetware - nothing. Absent.

When I was in Oxford the other day walking through the shopping centre, what should be on sale - right in prime position front and centre? The Watford FC Annual! I was thrilled. I didn't even know we had an annual.

Anyway, it seems clear that we are now NATIONAL rather than local, like we used to be.

    Proper big time Charlies.

Oxford United also play in yellow - you sure you didn't mix them up?

I was at Loughborough market the other day, one trader was selling some hideous club badges engraved in stone, I think intended for the garden. Taking pride and place alongside Arsenal, Liverpool,Chelsea,Man u & Barcelona was our moose. I gave the missus a little nudge, she could see the emotion on my face. One of the proudest moments of my life.

Afraid to say it isn’t international yet.

The street child selling handwoven bracelets in down town Karon Beach, Phuket only had Leeds, Notts Forest, Newcastle and the usual top 6 teams. I’m too tight to pay her the outrageous 20 Baht she wants to hand make a Watford one

More than twenty years ago I was going through Doncaster market and there was a stall selling framed aerial photographs of football stadiums. On display next to Elland Road and Old Trafford was Vicarage Road. So I bought it. I asked if he had one of Belle Vue - and of course he didnt. Only did the top two divisions!

I bought a WFC calendar in a shopping centre in Bristol. Choices were Man Utd, Liverpool, Watford or Barcelona. Loads left on the shelf as the local people here don’t use calendars as they have a farming cycle system based on using their 12 fingers.

Think she had one with a snake on it.

I could buy that as a present to give to Silva and hand it to him at the game to wear next to his massive watch

It would be nice to walk into a JJB Sports in any city and see a yellow hornets shirt hanging pride and place next to a Man Utd top.

Maybe next season when we win the Premiership title then do the lucrative treble the season after.

I remember talking to a stallholder in Bovvie Market when I bought my son a previous season's top (I *think* it was the "Le Coq Sportif" one) and him explaining to me that he was the only one, other than the Hornets Shop, allowed to sell 'fishal* Watford merchandise.

*A word not frequently used in conjunction with anything bought from Bovvie.

I knew we made it when the Woolworths (where McDonalds is now ) in Watford had WFC shirts in the window.

That was the season we go to the FA Cup final though -1984.

Football badge towels on sale on Snorbens market - Liverpool, the Manchestets, Spurs, Arsenal but no sign of Watford last time I looked.

You might think that our fame doesn't travel 8 miles in this direction, but the excellent Flagship Wines stock a good NZ Hornets sauvignon blanc complete with Watford badge on the label. Apparemtly the winemaker is an expat with excellent taste

Dinosaur! Metal and plastic are consistent in quality, cork isn't. Though I'll drink both (the wine, not the closures).

    Cue vigorous and ill-tempered debate.....

I know, I know I just can't bring myself to drink wine out of a bottle with a screw cap (any wine, port or sherry).

I'm a materials engineer by trade and I know this. I teach this. I correct students/lay people on doubting this but...

Try it from a nice glass rather than just glugging it from the bottle. Worked for me.

Blimey, talk about cutting your nose to spite your face.

So you are unable to drink almost all New World wines then? Certainly at the lower to middle end of price.

I spent a month in NZ, drank some superb SB and PN, and never used a corkscrew once.

Life's too short for daft principles like this!!

I know. My insanity goes even further.

Before getting "doctored" for a summer I was the manager of a Thresher's Wine Shop. Don't be fooled - Thresher's (AKA Whitbread) took their brand image and staff (management) product knowledge very seriously (e.g. I had a weekly budget of around £100 for staff/customer tastings) and I was sent to lots of "events/tastings/courses". The one that really stuck in my brain was at the Mexican Embassy where they were pushing to expand their wine trade (really, really good spicy, woody reds) a tie-up with TetraPak as this was ideal solution for storing wine. The cartons were internally coated with a variety of low, medium ad high density polypropylenes (and exceptionally inert polymer) that they had *fixed* the problem of oxygen diffusion into the product - the only way you would effect the wine would be by boiling the carton up to above 170 oC and causing the polymer blend to melt exposing the paper/foil support.

And all because the chief taster/blender* of Moët & Chandon** in Rheims gave me an almighty bollocking for opening a bottle of wine at lunch with "pop".

*Who smoked Gauloise disc bleu sans filtre constantly.

**A champagne that tastes consistently the same and is a blend of up to 60 different wines.

I've just remembered that in Split we saw a set of wooden Russian dolls with Troy's name on the back of his Watford kit. And that was in our Championship days.

Hajduk or Hornets? Tough choice for Splittites

I once spent part of an evening drinking wine from a plastic watering can. It had originally been decanted from one of those 4 litre cardboard boxes with one of those silver packets inside. What the Australians would refer to as 'goon', if I'm not mistaken. I was in Dublin at the time. The bouquet was positively intriguing.

Will you be bringing the canapés? Remember a combination of styles - ones to cleanse the palate, some to compliment the wines and some to eat with a wooden-chipfork.

When our sponsor was Phones4U, about 15-20 years ago?? I was at a JJB sports or whatever it was called and looking through the jersey rack. Mostly Liverpool Everton and Man U, but in amongst them one white Watford away top and a green goalkeeper one, both reduced. The away top was XL and I'm average size, but I bought it coz it was about a fiver. My wife made a pillow case out of it, like the old awful @Kit Toshiba top, which just reminds me of the sh@tHouse Vialli.

Since then, not a sniff of any kinda WFC stuff for sale on the high street up here.

That white away shirt is my all time favourite - and that comes from someone who doesn't give a flying fig about how good or bad our shirts are.
Think it's the only away shirt I've ever owned.

Just a heads up from CPOWAG - I saw that Lidl has got its delightful Toakj Furmint in and two Canadian "ice-wines" that would be a perfect compliment to Xmas pud - it's really odd that for all our love of sweet-sugary things, us Brits have never picked up the habit of dessert wines.
