After years of claiming his colour prevents him getting a management job Sol has landed the gig at Macclesfield.

Cannot lose really as they already look doomed so will just blame the previous manager/players if they go down or if he keeps them up will be a hero like Paul Ince was.

Bet he doesn't last beyond February.

When a player can so easily jump ship and play for your arch rivals then that says to me that person has no moral fibre. If I was ever in such a position to choose a club manager then the last person I'd be choosing is someone like Campbell. Did he ever consider that may be a reason?

Do you believe that his being hired for the Macclesfield job is glaring clear proof that all he has said about racism is football is instantly disproven?

As you say, they look doomed - well adrift at the bottom of the 4th. It's not a job many will have fancied and will pay very little too I should suppose.

Much as I dislike Arsenal, I don't wish Campbell any ill will in this venture.

No because you can probably never get rid of racism totally sadly. but it does seem a lot of black players do believe they simply don't get a chance due to colour even in today's modern society - I'd like to think a lot of clubs don't think like that this days given the multi cultural way football is now.

They might well have been a right 10 years ago or so when the likes of Campbell and co were coming to the end of their careers.

You'd agree that there certainly seems to be a notable disparity between the number of black players and the number of black managers and chief executives - right?

What do you think is the cause of that phenomenon? Just luck? Just the way the cookie has crumbled? Black people are better at athletic activities than managerial and executive ones?

There may be a multitude of reasons that Sol C hasn't been given a chance but the fact are the facts when it comes to the number of black players becoming managers. There is clearly is an issue. The trouble is any black player, like Sol, who wants to be a manager can point at those numbers as a reason he's not been appointed.

There certainly have been issues in the past with people being discriminated against but I do think now days any such agenda has decreased but guess I cannot speak for everyone inside the world of football!

You'll probably get people now saying he has only got the job because he used to be a high profile player!

I think he comes across as a bit of a muppet which is maybe why he hasn't been chosen in the past. I wonder how many ex black players apply for managerial jobs compared to white players. I suspect not many which will also help explain why there are not that many black managers. In fact there are many reasons why they are not chosen, sadly racism is probably one of them but certainly not the only reason. Good luck to Sol but I suspect it may not last long.

I honestly think in the past it was simply more out and loud and proud.

We don't get monkey noises or thrown bananas very often anymore. We've even moved on from the likes of Ron Atkinson assuring everyone that black players can only play when the weather's fine. People know they can't reasonably do that any more.

However I'm convinced that for many, especially of the older generation, prejudice is still hanging on strong - even if subconsciously - in the decisions and choices they make. Especially on big aspects that affect your life like such as whether to hire or not to hire, whether to accept as a tenant or not, whether to 'routinely' pull over and check or not, whether to prosecute or not.

When I first read your post I thought you'd written that it was 'deceased' and was about to start thumping the keyboard in response! I'd agree that I think it has 'decreased' a little, especially amongst the urban younger generations who are so well integrated with no problems and so deeply mixed into assorted multicultural families, that the concept of racism becomes blindingly obviously nonsensical.

However there remains, I'm convinced, a deep-seated racism amongst the older generation - especially the suburban and rural. A feeling that white people are innately superior of intellect and managerial capabilities. A feeling that Britain is a white country and that brown people are here on sufferance. As immigrants and guests. Nasty bitter opinions reinforced by the Daily Mail and such.

Unfortunately that same older kipper generation are often the boss, landlord, magistrate, football chairman etc and hold the reins of power. The statistics in all areas of crime, imprisonment, educational achievement, average income, employment rates, life expectancy, infant mortality (and yes, league football managers!), for me, show that there is a far greater level of racism going on than many British people would like to acknowledge.

The cleared conclusion from the discussion is that white English players are significantly under represented in Prem.

I agree with that, except that I think it was Ron Noades, not Ron Atkinson, who said black players could only play in the sunshine. The stereotype was that black players could only be pacy forwards, but Big Ron signed Batson as well as Cunningham and Regis.

There is definitely a disparity between the number of black players and black managers but the reasons are not clear. As we seem to have so many managers in England that are not English and in most cases never even played in England as well as many non-English owners we need to look at football as a whole not just the English game.

Yes but there are some....plus its easier to assess the ability of a player when you choose who to retain/release. The ability of an ex player to become a manager is more of a hunch. I believe that there is still a perception that black guys are less disciplined, structured, less likely to enfore authority, more free-spirited etc, and are therefore less likely to be suited to management generally. I think we see that bias in other industries too, not just football management.

Of course racism is an international problem. Worse in some countries than others.

I was going to write that it exists in "almost every country", but then I couldn't think of one single country where it doesn't happen to a greater or lesser extent in various forms.

Surely it hasn't helped Campbell's chances that he comes across as a massive buffoon every time he opens his mouth? I hope he succeeds at Macclesfield as at least there would then be some hope that a full time football career would keep him away from politics.

Yep amazing job given where they were last season. Interesting to see how he does next season, either there or if he gets snapped up by a team higher up the ladder.

Do you mean earlier this season? As last season they won the Conference and, without checking, I’d guess more winners of that league survive their first L2 season than don’t. A lot seem to even challenge higher up.

Well 3 fairly newly promoted sides finished in the top 7 of League Two so yes some do pretty well.

Fleetwood, Accrington, Stevenage have all held their own too.

Macclesfield haven't had the money some of those clubs have though and infact couldn't pay their players on time for a couple of months this season.

When Campbell arrived in late November they were 4 points from safety and 3 points behind Notts County. So a good performance to keep them up but not a miraculous one.

Yes. I'm reading soccernomics, which makes the point that it's much easier to judge a player's contribution than a manager's. Therefore, boards make the safe choice, somebody who has done it before and hasn't ****ed up completely.

Boards are mostly comprised of ageing white guys who find it easier to relate to younger white guys than to black ones. The Rooney rule doesn't guarantee that black applicants will get a fair deal, but at least it ensures that one of them will get a hearing. There's plenty of evidence from non-sport businesses that people with black-sounding names are less likely to get an interview.

Mind you, I still think Sol Campbell is a pillock

Wasn't it Notts Co who Sol joined as a player on some ridiculous contract in Div1/2 about 10 years ago ? Then left after about a month ? A bit ironic he has saved Macclesfield at their expense. Might be wrong and the media don't seem to have mentioned it.
