Rooney to play for England one more time.

I guess it's just a nice round number but 120 caps puts him one ahead of former Hornets goalkeeper Pat Jennings (boooo!) and level with another former Hornets goalkeeper Mart Poom.

For sure it's to generate interest in what would be a pretty low key friendly but Southgate has said he see's the benefit of having a seasoned international involved with the squad.

I agree, but as I said in another thread, if I had already purchased a ticket for this it would be returned as I can't stand the w***er.

Mostly against weaker teams like San Marino, though, which has been a longstanding criticism I happen to agree with. Every time he needed to step up against the big boys, he was anonymous.

He played in three World Cup finals and has 1 goal to his name there, which says it all (the 2-1 loss to Uruguay in 2014). That's a dismal record.

When it mattered, Rooney simply didn't produce at international level. Owen was a far superior player for us (pre-injury obviously) despite having less goals to his name.

Made worse by the amazing impact he'd made at the Euros as an 18? year old. So much potential. So little end product for England. Can barely remember a crucial impact in any of the 119 games bar those first few in the Euros eg Croatia.

I think all friendly matches outside of qualification games for a World Cup or continental competition should not count as caps or the goals scored in them. It would render some of the caps records players have accumulated meaningless but considering how many more international fixtures there are it makes sense to me.

I prefer the rugby and cricket models where caps are only awarded for Test matches.

England Women now doing something just as pathetic. It totally devalues international caps. How can they not see that?

England manager Phil Neville has "banned" captain Steph Houghton from playing against Austria on Thursday so she can earn her 100th cap at home three days later against Sweden.
Neville said he wanted the occasion to be a "celebration" of her international career on home soil in Rotherham.
"Steph won't be involved on Thursday. She wants to play but we told her no," said Neville.
Striker Fran Kirby and midfielder Keira Walsh miss out through injury.
"I wanted to make Sunday a special day because she [Houghton] has earned it," said Neville. "She deserves it so she will be rested and it can be a celebration of her England international career.
"She actually doesn't want it to be about her because she is so humble and she wanted to make her 100th cap in Austria. But we have almost banned her from playing. It is very doubtful she will even be on the bench."

Aside from anything else it looks like a basic manager fail. If you manage someone who says they don't want a fuss about something and would rather it was kept low key, and you go ahead and make a big show of it in front of everyone, you're an arse. And almost certainly thinking of yourself rather than the person you manage.

TBF who wouldn't want to celebrate their 100th cap in Rotherham in front of 2500 fans and 5000 kids with free school tickets.

Welbeck injured (appears to be a very nasty one) so probably means Rooney will get more time than expected on the pitch.

Looks like Neville's circus backfired completely. First home defeat in 3yrs.

  13. Nice to see Wilson bringing his Bournemouth diving into the England team. Shame the international refs are a little better than the prem or we'd be 1-0 up now.

I only switched over as the tennis hadn't started and all I saw was a white shirted player on the floor.

Wasn't much of a fanfare when he came on - maybe that is after the match?

USA have had most of the ball since Rooney came on .

That was exactly the sort of dive which is no longer considered a dive in the modern game: the forward, anticipating ‘contact’ from the defender or goalkeeper, collapses his knees at the right moment just as the challenge comes in. On this occasion, to his credit, the ref didn’t give a penalty but next season under VAR these will all be given.

Got free tickets to this so decided to pop along. Thought the US played some good football with Pusilic and Wood being the main players. Sancho and Winks were superb throughout and Chilwell was awful.

Take comfort. Brother Rooney will always be with us. You just need to close your eyes and he's there.

Rooney looked in better shape last night than he did for the last 2 seasons he was playing football in the PL.

I'd imagine part of the reason is he's playing regularly for DC Comics rather than the 10 minute cameos he was afforded for Mourinho United.

Thought it was a fitting gesture. Good luck to him.

Despite his sad private life plastered all over the media, he was a pleasure to watch in his prime & a good servant to the English game.

Just watched the highlights on ITV and Lee Dixon basically said Wilson had a right to go down because the goalie came rushing out of goal to challenge him and missed the ball!

That is a former hard nosed defender saying that so you just know how accepted trying to con the officials is .

Rooney would have scored one of the chances we've missed today !

And typically Croatia now score ..

Absolutely dreadful for that goal. Ambled back way behind the play like he was on a Sunday stroll in the park before finally putting himself in the way (as Croat bloke took 30 seconds on the ball in the area!) and deflecting the ball beyond Pickford.
