This is the table showing record transfer fees paid. Not doing bad are we.

After 12 games above United and just 4 points behind Arsenal.

Of course it depends which quoted figures you use. £18.5m for Gray includes add-ons (anyone know when they kick in?), but Soccerbase has his fee at £11.5m and according to them our record buy is £12.75m for Success.

I rarely look at the league table closely. Most times you see it and only the basic parts of shown, like points, games played and goal difference.

I just looked at one of those old fashioned league tables, you know the ones which actually show P W D L F A Pts Gd.

I didn't realise how good our defensive record was. Only 14 goals in 12 games. When you think we had a 0-4 at home to Bournemouth included in that stat, it's quite a remarkable achievement.

So in the other 11 games we've conceded just 10 goals. It's clear where our biggest improvement has been this season. It rarely gets the credit, but the defensive unit has improved beyond all recognition.

Many consider our defenders a little sub-standard for the Premier League, but it just goes to show what good organisation, attitude and coaching can achieve. It reminds me a little of our first season after promotion. This is how QSF got us. We had an "amazing" defensive record under him. After 29 games we had only conceded 30 goals.

The big difference from then to now, is the style of play. We are carrying a much greater threat going forward and have a fluidity to the way we play. Still, there is room for improvement of course, but I thought the much maligned defence deserved some overdue credit.

Out of the first 12 games we have
    Won half. (6)
    Lost a third (4)
    Drawn a sixth (2)

    Perfect maths!

Which is why duodecimal counting is much more sensible than decimal. 12 can be divided by 2, 3, 4 & 6. 10 can only be divided by 2 & 5.

A couple of other interesting stats from the EPL site.

    https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/clubs/saves?se=210

    • We have the 6th best record for goals conceded, whilst Foster has made 4th least saves. Conclusion being we are concededing very few chances before a save is even needed to be made.

    • Only City have created more "Missed Major Chances " than us. However our goal scored ranking is quite low at joint 10th. This tells us what we already know , that we miss a lot of chances. It is commonly accepted that creating the chances is the hardest thing for a team to do, so plenty of encouragement there.

On the back of that, "Big Chances Missed" will be no surprise to anyone. We've missed 25 big chances. By big chances I suspect they mean clear cut scoring opportunities. Only City have missed more. They've missed 26, but when you consider the quantity of chances they create, it's understandable they will be missing a lot.

    https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/clubs/big_chance_missed?se=210

With regards to Foster, he's made the most catches of a high ball in the league. He's made 17 high claims.

We've apparently only hit the woodwork once, and that must have been Pereyra last week at Southampton, and this is the lowest in the entire league.

We are midtable when it comes to shooting. We've had 150 shots this season, although it doesn't state how many are on target. I should imagine that figure to be quite low.

I'm surprised to see how low down we are for passing and touches. I would consider us quite an attractive passing side, but we're down in 15th.

As always, we are very high for yellow cards. We're in 2nd place. Only West Ham are above us with one more booking.

If you compare goals and chances missed we have a very poor success rate. Only Wolves, Palace and Southampton have a worse ratio than us.

Surprisingly the top 3 are Burnley, Arsenal and Brighton.

Complete contrast with QSF season where we were the most efficient in front of goal creating very few chances but converting many of them mainly thanks to Ighalo.

The duodecimal system was used by the Vikings...the traditional Anglo-Saxon system was decimal...nothing to do with the French...the Normans used the duodecimal system as, although they spoke a sort of French, they were Norwegian in origin...

The duodecimal system was used by the Sumerians along with the sexagesimal system, which is why we have 12 hours, and sixty minutes in a clock. By combining these counting systems you can easily count to sixty on your fingers.

Interesting to see the Premier League currently contains 12 previous winners. That's including the old Div 1.

I was surprised to see Southampton as runners up in 1984, although they did have a good side back then. Palace 3rd in 1991!! Even Burnley have won it....wow

    Three observations
    • All of the teams who have been Football League Champions or Premier League Champions since 1888 are currently in either the PL or the Championship, except for Portsmouth and Sunderland, who occupy the top two places in League One.
    • It's getting on for 100 years since the Giants of Tyneside were Football League Champions
    • I can never remember if CPFC were going to be the "team of the 80's" or the "team of the 90's"

Re Palace I think they were going to be the team of the 80's with Malcolm Allison at the helm, Terry Venables behind him and Fiona Richmond with a helping hand!

It was team of the 80s but it was definitely after Allison in the Venables era of the late 70s. To be fair to ‘Tel’ however, it wasn’t his claim; it was a media thing. He soon sloped off to irritate us with his offside trap at QPR.

Sorry for the slow updates - work been manic recently.

Enjoyed the last few minutes of that game.

    The current position is:
    • 2 points worse than this time last year (20 vs 22). This is 1 points worse than after the last game.
    • 5 points better than the comparable fixtures last year (20 vs 15). This is the same as after the last game
    • 4 points better than the '40 point' line (20 vs 16). This is 1 points worse than after the last game.

Yes, the worst return from 15 games, but it's all very marginal. We are probably on par with all the other seasons, so statistically we've not progressed from that team in our very first season. That team still is the one that recorded the most points in a season.

So it looks like we're on target for another 40 point total, which is disappointing.

I expect we'll lose at Everton, but I'm hoping things will pick up after that. It's all subjective, but I believe we're a much better team now, than this time last year, even though results do not support that.

We are missing Richarlison, but only the Richarlison from the early part of last season, or the Richarlison that's playing for Everton this season. He's a player that can force a goal for you. We don't have anyone that can do that currently. We have to create many gilt-edge chances in order to score one, and that's just not good enough.

We are better organised defensively, and we are creating plenty of chances. These are all good signs. I firmly believe we're on the right track, but we're a couple of players short of being a top half team. We are in that small bracket hovering just above the drop zone. This is where I now see us, so I've revised my opinion of potentially "best of the rest", although I don't think we're miles away from that. If we have a good January window, then we certainly could storm up the league and stay there.

If the last 11 games are replicated for the rest of the season, then we're in trouble. 11 games from only 15 played is the vast majority, so is a valid snapshot in which to make an opinion. However, I believe we're better than the results have suggested.

The trouble is, the last two games have seen a drop in performance level. This is a concern, but if we get to around 27 points by the turn of the year, we'll be fine this season.

It's the vs comparable teams that in my opinion is the best indicator. Apart from a couple of decent results early on, we've not really progressed at all.
