Presume it will be for 5 minutes at the end and if we don't win/fans boo Rooney won't swear into the camera ..

    I beg your pardon?
Is this a very early April Fool?
Nonsense, but highly likely as it is the FA!

The muppets at the FA doing what they do best by ******* things up. They devalued their own cup competition in an instant by letting Man U opt out to play in China. They turned Wembley stadium into a corporate soulless bowl, which they’re now trying to sell off. Now they’re devaluing the honour of an England cap. They’re as useless and corrupt as FIFA

Just when you thought an England cap couldn't be devalued even further...

Rooney has, for the most part, been a massive let down in an England shirt. Why anyone feels he's owed a farewell appearance is beyond me.

It's astonishingly poor. I might understand, but would still disagree, if he had 99 caps. What a complete joke.

This sort of selection occurs quite regularly in Seniors GB tennis ( 35 and over in five year age groups).
Players recently have been selected because they were a friend of the captain and another, as a reward for financial help to their county.
I don't know whether to be shocked or disappointed.
    I probably shouldn't be either.

The Rooney equivalent in tennis would be Henman being called up for the next Davis cup match as he didn't get a proper chance to say goodbye to the supporters.

It's a friendly.. against the USA. Personally i wouldn't care if they selected Mickey Rooney.

Come on it won't hurt if he is given a few minutes at the end, after all Chalobah got an outing last time out and he isn't even fully fit yet!

I couldn't care less about the match or the result but I do care about Southgate picking a team that serves some sort of purpose otherwise where do you stop ? "Win an England cap" competitions on the back of weetabix packets ? Play a few celebrities to increase the level of interest ? We should be looking to blood a youngster for 10 mins rather than a last hurrah for a former player.

    Disagree.

Sir Bobby has been stuck on 49 goals for 48 years.

Time he put that hoodoo to bed.

And he has been critical of the fans in the past - might not be the heroes reception he would hope for.

    Beckham will want one next.

You could stop after letting Rooney play a small role in a friendly game so he can get his 120th cap? It's not like this sort of thing comes up often. In fact i can't recall any other occasion.

Is the English national set up so fragile that this would upset the development of the team? There seems to be plenty of opportunities to blood the youngsters.. as we have done recently. Actually perhaps having a very experienced international in the squad environment might be just as useful as letting one of the kids have a run around.

Yes I would stop it. I don't think caps should be awarded for purely sentimental reasons under any circumstances. Not even for 5 minutes. It devalues the match even further and sets an awkward precedent. what is so special about having 120 caps rather than 119 ?

    It's like one more man.

Seriously though that's not the only reason. There's the charity angle plus some clever marketing spark has worked out that what with him playing in the USA this will increase interest in the game. Rooney was still playing for the national team 2 years ago.. and still plays top level football (albeit in the states) It's not like they are going to have to push him out there in a wheelchair.

Maybe also Greavesy, to make up for 1966.

We could do with a Greavesy.

He's 78 so Gino would probably keep it to a 4 year contract.

Caps should be earned, not given out as consolation prizes.

It sends a very bad message and somewhat devalues the worth of a cap.

He suffered a major stroke a couple of years ago.

For some random reason, we went to WHL during my first Vic season. I stood on an orange box & Greavsie (I spelt it right this time) scored 4.

Why would Rooney accept such a tawdry invitation?

Will he do a Baddiel & Skinner style re enactment of his South African monologue as he is subbed off?

Don’t really care but don’t get the relevance of getting to 120 caps, since when has that ever been a significant number?

Would people have looked back in years to come and said that Rooney, what an absolute loser he only played for England 119 times?

    It's all very odd.
Siobhan Nicholson played Fed Cup for Ireland but Seniors tennis for GB.
It appears all sports can do exactly as they please regarding who plays for whom and what counts as a cap/call up.

It's a ridiculous thing to be doing - but he's the record goalscorer. Not sure that constitute's being a 'massive let-down'.

What is even more crazy is the stories this morning - the FA have labelled it as being in aid of his charity foundation, but the press have seemingly discovered that not a penny is going to charity.

  34. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

Not sure what's suddenly so relevant about a '120th' cap?

The charity thing is being shown in the media this morning to be false-advertising as not a penny is going to his foundation.

If you ask me, the whole thing is being done to drive ticket sales as they struggle to fill Wembley for friendlies against lesser opponents. I'm actually very shocked that Southgate has agreed to the idea. But there again, he has named 4 GK's in his last 2 squads so nothing should surprise me.

Southgate is a classic upwards managing suit.

It wouldn't enter his head to disagree with his boss.
