I see the logic behind no rebounds for pens, but the Deeeenneeeeyy goal wouldn’t have happened under this ruling.

    These monsters must be stopped.

  3. Why must they mess with pretty sound rules when there are bigger issues.

Leave the penalty rule alone. It works perfectly.

The "intentional" handball rule is actually starting to work really well now and the refs do get 90% of the calls correct.

Put some effort into stamping out bloody diving. Come up with plans to prevent so much time wasting. Don't fix what isn't broken.

The article says that's also under consideration by abolishing subs in injury time and to make subbed players leave by the nearest touchline rather than having to walk back to the bench on halfway.

  5. I should really read the article rather than just rant about the bits someone picks out and posts shouldn't I! :(

With regards to time wasted, I mean, reports suggest a ball is generally in play 50-60 minutes of a game so if the clock literally stopped during stoppages, would that make a game 120 minutes effectively on average (or a little bit longer if you add time out of play for the additional time being played - that made sense I'm my head)?

I could live with that I think.

    Ha.

There was a proposal discussed last year to reduce games to 60 minutes but have the clock stop for every stoppage.

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/jun/17/football-rule-makers-reducing-games-60-minutes

I don't know what came of the idea though - whether it got booted completely or put out for trial somewhere.

I'd go a step further and not allow any substitutions whatsoever after say the 95th minute whether there is an injury or not.

We did not even have substitutions at all in the past, so to make a team play the last 5 minutes + added on time with players short through injury would be no great hardship, afterall substitutions that late in the game are mostly to disrupt play and time waste so it would only serve to make the game flow better.

    This website's interesting:

    http://www.play-fair.com/

It outlines the strategy the IFAB and FIFA are working to in experimenting with changing the laws of the game. There's a big bit with ideas on dealing with time wasting under 'Increasing playing time'

Here's a novel idea. Just let the referee add time on at the end of the game. Job done. No need for a rule change.

How long does the game go on for then? I'm not sure it's that simple. As Horace says, the ball is dead or out of play for about 15 minutes a half. Time added on might favour a home side or a fitter opponent.

I'm not saying your wrong. But every rule changes causes a ripple effect.

I think the whole penalty aspect of the game needs to be fundamentally assessed.

In the original rules it was designed to penalise somebody who had prevented someone from scoring a goal.

In the modern game, it now signifies an area where any attacking player is looking to "draw" a foul from an opposition in order to "win" a penalty. A lot of time the penalty box is already crowded and the attacker has little chance of scoring a goal but a penalty is awarded.

In any sport its imperative that any punishment should befit the original infringement, in order to maintain a fair and balanced contest. In the current game Id say at least 50% of the penalties awarded are far too extreme a punishment for the originating infringement, thus creating an unhealthy imbalance between goals scored and team who performed better.

I think FIFA needs to sort out three major issues in order to drastically improve the game.

    • Diving- It has now become so imbred in the culture that if you dont dive ie cheat, then you are at a disadavantage in the game

    • Harassing the Referee - Just let him/her do their job. If they were nt so harassed you would have a better level of adjudicating as the refs wouldnt need huge egos and could concentrate on performance.

    • Time wasting.

In an ideal world I would suggest draconian rules for a season to eradicate cheating quickly and efficiently. It would be chaotic for 6 months but would be gone from the game pretty quickly.

Problem is referees are weak plonkers. 6 subs. 2 goals with painfully long celebration. A raft of players taking 1 minute to leave after substitution. Goalkeepers (Foster included) wasting 30 seconds every goal kick. Players rolling in agony.

"The 4th official has indicated there will be at least 5 added minutes"

We need men of substance who will add 15 minutes.

Agree with this - they're the three parts of the game I'd also like to see eradicated.

Diving needs be sorted out by a panel giving retrospective punishments. We have the technology to see if players are going down too easily, and we need to use it. First dive of the season could be a warning. Then an incremental 1 game ban per dive beyond that. If a player goes down clutching their face etc. the ref should log such incidents, ask the player what happened, and if the player said "I got hit in the face" and he didn't, the same punishment should apply.

I think anyone questioning the refs decisions in a raised voice, apart from captains (who get a bit more leeway), should get a yellow card. Get on with the game. If players run over to the ref and get in his personal space, again a yellow.

Time wasting is trickier if you don't want to stop the clock when the ball is out of play, which could lead to really long games. I wouldn't mind long games personally. You aren't sure how long a rugby game is going to last, but it doesn't seem to exhaust players too much. Players should have to use football to play out tight games, rather than non-football. 5-7 seconds should be allowed for a throw in/ goal kick/ corner to be taken, and then the clock should stop.

Swap a penalty for free beer for the fans and clubs can play a "joker" for 10 minutes where the goal is extended by 1 metre wide and 50cm higher, and theres no offside in this time.

Instead of sendings off the opposition can choose to add another 2 players to their team for 10 minutes. Meaning late cynical red cards get punished more.

Sin bin for orange cards and rolling subs controlled by a 4th official.

And if theres a penalty shootout. Use both ends of the stadium so penalties are taken at the same time with a stadium buzzer and 5 second countdown. Keeper needs to be ready, if hes not then tough you should have been. Will eradicate the in your face cynical keeper rubbish.

Diving punished by having Zaha thrown out of football.

Yes, banning Muff would eradicate 50% of incorrect penalties and unjust sending off's.
