If you could only listen to 3 albums for the rest of your life, what would they be?

    Magazine were sublime.

Maybe they still are but I wish this reheat/revival thing would stop.

Sentimental comfort blanket stuff. Always keep looking forward!

Me too. I would have been a couple of years older.

One of the few times I saw much argle bargle at a gig in those days.

So many bands passed through Hemel & Friars in that period.

The Cramps left an indelible mark on me.

Btw, this thread should remind us all to seize the moment.

When we are in Europe, going deep into the Fairs Cup or whatever, busy mid weeks will preclude these cultural diversions.

It will all Reids types & white boards.

Actually The Knife is about my 4th favourite (out of 6) on the album.
Saw them at Watford Tech when they were 2nd on the bill to Steamhammer Mark 2 & the a couple of weeks later at the Kingdom Hall in front of about 50 people...before Phil Collins joined & Gabriel often couldn’t face the audience.
As for the Dead, I’ve got pretty well all their ‘official’ official albums and a couple of poor quality bootlegs...a lot of them went missing when I was at Uni and certain friends were taking their ‘collectivity’ a bit too literally

How far into the fancy dress at that stage was Gabriel?

I was into them for a while. As John Peel said, every thoughtful middle class lad spent 1975 with a copy of Lamb Lies Down On Broadway under their arm.

    But then punk & Kaboom!

    Wire - fantastic!

With 20 tracks in 40 mins, Pink Flag is a miniaturist epic.

Always associate it with driving around Iceland.

I most certainly was NOT a punk, I was a trade unionist. I did however live with a fashion student girl from Welwyn Garden who loved Siouxie and the bloody banshees and modelled her blonde afro, big panda eye make up and leather jacket on her too.

I never tired of explaining to her what a turgid pile of steaming earache it was, but she was beyond reasoning. Fashion student as I say. You know what they're like. All style and no substance.

Alas the inevitable moment of our breaking up arrived and I had to tell her that I didn't want to live with her any more. Or rather I didn't want her to live with me any more, because it was my gaff.

Life has its twists and turns and, as Troy Deeney himself can confirm, nobody governs in matters of the heart. Who could have been more surprised than me when another woman moved in a few days after her departure. She got wind of that and was very, very cross about it. She even went to the time and trouble of dropping off a tin of maggots wrapped in Xmas paper at my work.

So if I was on the desert island and you'd brought along the wailing bloody susan banshees, it wouldn't take many plays before I ripped it off the turntable and sent it skimming out over the waves......

Impressive shagpad arrangement you had going there, Clive.

In Das Kapital, doesn’t Marx suggest fishing in the morning as part of the ideal daily regime in a communist state?

Sounds like Ms Bromley Massive was playing you in with the gift of bait.

The cure were and still are the best band ever to grace this planet !
Did you ever listen to the Glove, the Smith and Severin creation ? Perfect murder is great.

Yes, that's a really underrated album, as good as anything the Cure and the Banshees released at the time, with the exception of stand-outs like Faith, Head on the Door, Disintegration, and maybe Kiss in the Dreamhouse, and unlike most I actually really like Jeanette Landray's vocals on that. Lovely sounds and an intriguing mix of both bands' styles, with a strong psychedelic feel in both the music and lyrics. Perfect Murder is my favourite on the album after Like an Animal.

Furthermore on the subject of punk - that was a boat on which I chose not to sail. And in retrospect, when those punk groups come up on old Top of the Pops shows they put on BBC4, I can see that I wasn't mistaken.

Inelegant. Ugly. Lightweight. A short-lived craze.

I have nothing against the punks of the time. Indeed, I was grudgingly admiring of their anti-establishment zeal and important contributions to resistance to the fascist elements of the time. Hence, how come I ended up living with this Siouxie student and dutifully escorting her to various events of her choosing (including the Horn of Plenty in St Albans which someone mentioned here recently). These are the same events as described wistfully by the ex-punks earlier in the thread. I don't understand how all that flobbing and pushing and shoving represents having a good time. All a bit too homo-erotic for me.

And once I'd taken her to Gaz's Rockin' Blues and the 100 Club and the Whisky-a-go-go (WAGG) club and such places, even she didn't really push the idea of going to those punk place any more.

  14. You have reminded me of an amazing album which might have to go in - Deadicated, which was an album of covers of Dead songs. Included Friend of the Devil by Lyle Lovett, Ship of Fools by Elvis Costello, Bertha by Los Lobos. and loads of other great stuff. IMO better than the originals (ducks).

On another note Gloria by Patty Smith has without question the best opening line of any song ever:
Jesus died for somebpdy's sins but not mine...

  15. I bumped into them on my way to a mate's house in Nascot Wood - gave them a hand shifting gear into their manager's garage.

It was 1970, so no fancy dress at all...from what I recall he wore a leather jacket and jeans, very long hair and seemed a bit shy...probably why he went so out there on fancy dress later.
‘Lamb Lies Down’ was the last album of theirs I bought...and it’s my least favourite of the albums before Gabriel left. After that I found whatever had made me like them was no longer there.

Loads of her lines are brilliant & her book ‘Just Kids’ is excellent.
No matter how good a cover, without Garcia’s guitar there’ll always be the magic missing

The 100 Club of course famously staged a punk festival in ‘76. All the bands who were, or went on to be the biggest names of the time played there.

Was punk already well known as a genre then? I thought the punk explosion really began in earnest in 1977, and the Sex Pistols' first release Anarchy in the UK didn't come out until late 1976. I can't think of any other punk bands from that year, apart from the Ramones the other side of the pond.

Blondie of 76 (albeit heavily influenced by the Ramones) was punk.

Agreed, but just remembered that it was actually Gang of Four I saw, not Wire!

Im afraid too many loud gigs/cheap cider are playing with my memory.

I dont have much RAM these days so I have to delete any old data every time I need to remember something new.

There is a certain blurring of that period in my mind. Who played where?

A small wonder that A levels happened at all.

One of my memorable gigs of this epoch was Kate Bush.

She didn’t defecate on stage &, frankly, it never seemed a possibility.

The first punk single I believe:

The Saints were absolutely f*ckin awesome. There is a fantastic documentary about them forming in Brisbane which at that time was practically a police state (honestly!)

Or possibly Brahms & his 3rd Racket.

You lot need to listen to some proper music.

Britney Spears - Oops I did it again is a great album. 'Lucky' is up there with any song in the last 200 years.

MC5 , Stooges and Detroit sound for me any day .

Pistols were basically Malcolm Maclarens boy band .

Always thought New York Dolls and Ramones had the attitude but the music sounded like Bay City Rollers.
