MOTD would be infinitely better if they cut the terrible per match punditry and had two segments (middle and end) discussing some interesting football topic. Things could include the handball rule, 3 at the back, corner set plays. Basically anything other than watching Danny Murphy rub his knees and declare that he likes Sturridge as a player because he’s direct and offers something abit different.

Personally I prefer Gabby Logan to Lineker. She seems to know more about football and is nicer to look at.

Picking up on these words because they make up the crux of the MOTD big club centric argument (I don't mean yours specifically, but in general).

Viewing figures mean NOTHING to the BBC. It's a publicly funded company; they don't sell advertisements. Pandering to the biggest clubs makes no sense whatsoever, and creates a feedback loop: youngsters grow up hearing about the Big 6...er, Big 7 (sorry, Everton) and the next generation gravitates towards the clubs getting all the coverage.

The biggest appeal of a publicly funded company is it can do things advertising funded stations can't do due to the importance of viewing figures. There's no reason MOTD needs to follow the same formula as paid stations; rather than concentrate on what gets them the biggest views, they could focus on making a quality program instead. Realistically, MOTD could and should be the best football show on television as it's one of the view that's not hostage to ratings, but instead we get intellectually inferior former pros droning on about absolute ******** week in, week out.

Doctor Who has demonstrated what a quality show can do for the BBC around the world; it's internationally syndicated and making the Beeb a small fortune. MOTD could easily replicate that success if the focus was on the quality of the show rather than pandering to the biggest clubs/former clubs of the pundits/Leicester, but instead they just take the easy, lazy approach.

Simply put, MOTD could be so much more and the football watching public should be demanding that.

Glenn Roeders galacticos from the 1990"s were considerably better. We're on a par with Lewingtons legends though.

Strictly dancing seems to be interested I viewing figures, and I'm sure if the bbc spend millions on producing a show the bosses need to justify the cost. (License to show highlights and big ears salary).

However.... Surely putting the big clubs on last would keep the figures up? Or having a predetermined unannounced random order where you don't know when your club are on would keep you watching?

I wasn’t at the game yesterday but after reading the high praise Wolves fans are giving us on their board makes me ask you...was that our best performance of the season?

Lineker is one of the highest paid BBC presenters - well over a million. You imagine that the others who are on with him are handsomely paid too.

I agree wholeheartedly that they should be braver than aping Sky's efforts. I often have it recorded and fast forward through everything except the actual games themselves. As others have said, I'm not really interested in hearing that so-and-so is a really good player and watching super-slow-mo replays of what we've already seen twice, but this time with a sunbeam from heaven lighting up whoever scored the goal.

Almost every week the highlights fail to show 'the story' of our game. It's little more than showing the goals and a couple of other shots on target and major incidents. Considering the millions spent, it's little different really from poor old Ian Holloway's desperate Amateur Hour EFL Show over on Men & Motors 3 earlier in the evening. Show the goals, 25 seconds of 'sick as a parrot/over the moon' from the two managers, couple of ex-pros saying who played well and who played badly.

There are lots and lots and lots of people in football who would dearly love to have a chance presenting the No.1 UK football show on TV and who would happily do it (and do it very well) for £50k per year. There's no need to pay those enormous salaries. The money saved should be invested in making it an innovative and ground-breaking show. The length of highlights of each game should be increased and the aim should be to extract the 'story' of the game in a journalist's style. Perhaps a couple of quick quotes from fans of each team to go alongside the manager's thoughts. The analysis afterwards should concentrate on looking at the tactics used, how those worked out, where the 1 on 1 battles between players were won and lost, what changes were made with subs etc.

Leave the glamour and glitter explosions to Sky and go for the footballing geek market instead with a serious product that's completely different from banal commercial output.

Sorry Arakel but the first comment is simply not true. The BBC may be publicly funded but it still has to justify its budget and its programmes' budgets - viewing figures most certainly do matter. Your comment on Doctor Who is actually a case in point of how big viewing figures are important for the organisation.

As for MOTD, I can't be bothered to get too wound up about it. I was only annoyed about our slot because I put MOTD on in bed but fell asleep before our match was shown so missed the highlights. What irritated me more were the comments by Garth Crooks and Dion Dublin on the BBC results show or whatever they call it. I'm away this weekend (Longleat Center Parcs - that's info for @Horace_goes_up_north ) so had limited access to tv channels. I was out until the second half of the match, which I then "followed" via the Shoutbox on here, the match thread on the Wolves forum and this BBC show. The Wolves fans were extremely complimentary and were all saying how well we were playing and what a good side we were. The two BBC pundits both said that we won because, instead of trying to play football, we were just physical. Their summary bore no semblance to what the fans of either side were saying.

Excellent win with 2 very well taken goals.

Held on pretty well under pressure in the 2nd too.

Can Lawro and Merson predict us to lose every week ?!

As for MOTD - they put the big teams on first or games with lots of goals in.

Plus Newcastle if they lose and Shearer is on so he can rant at Ashley .

We will never be that high unless we beat someone like Spurs or win/lose in a high scoring game.

  13. Not that I don't agree with your general point about the poor quality of MOTD but they can't syndicate it because the PL has the rights to 80% of the content and does its own syndication (obvs). I'm not sure 20 minutes of Linaker Murphy and Shearer talking to each other, about matches you'll just have to imagine, would be a big sell, no matter how erudite and incisive. (Lol)

People really do get so annoyed about MOTD. If it bothers you so much, don’t watch it. You won’t miss much. It’s really not aimed at “proper” football fans going to matches, but rather at those millions who like and follow the sport but very rarely, if ever, attend. And most of those couch supporters follow ManU, Liverpool, Spuds etc.

Some people on here seem to watch the programme just so that they can complain about it.

  15. Don't worry, Capoue will get into Crook's (apt name for someone who steals a living) team of the week. As will Doucoure for 2 assists.

Their forum is great to read. Giving us huge credit and we’ll worth reading.

Nice that a losing team don’t try and make excuses and give the winning team credit.

Saying we were by far best they have played even with half 1st team miss8ng

Monday Night Football with Neville and Carragher has by far the best analysis. They do have a couple of days to prepare but nonetheless it’s the only punditry that actually goes into depth

Just watched the match highlights on sky, and I must say we were brilliant in the first half. Some of the neat passing, running off the ball, and pressing were a joy to watch. I honestly cannot recall any point in my WFC watching career where i have felt we were playing so well, and not been looking downwards rather than up. This is a truly special team at the moment and we should all enjoy this season for all its worth. Ps Garth Crooks is the biggest of the big ******* football pundits on tv at the moment. At least you can blame mersons stupidity on class A drug addiction

Imo Motd should go back to its old format of having 2 or 3 extended highlights with a modern day Brian Moore type (not Hill obviously) giving a synopsis and interviewing the managers.

The rest of the games could just show goals which is pretty much all they do now anyway.

The first half performance was one of the best I can ever remember seeing. I’m in my thirties so don’t remember the eighties, but I honestly don’t remember ever seeing such a complete performance from us. We’ve beaten bigger teams and had more important and exciting results, but I was seriously shocked at how well we broke up play and then passed the ball around with such composure. The second half performance was till good, but more about containment and managing the game. Overall I don’t really remember seeing us play that well for 90 minutes for a long long time.

With regards to MOTD, for those with Sky wont goals on Sunday not provide a better analysis?

To be fair to Murphy and Shearer, I seriously doubt they sit and watch all the games in full, for one there wouldn’t be enough time, so they’ll just be basing their opinions on the same highlights that we see and the narrative the producer gives them. They might have watched the Man Utd Chelsea game and one 3 o’clock kick off, but the wouldn’t have watched out game so based on those highlights what else could they say?

And also slightly defending the producers, we played fantastically well yesterday but as far as ‘highlights’ go, a clip of us spraying passes around for 5 minutes or Capoue breaking up play for the 1000th time wouldn’t really be highlights.

Hanker for the days of the Big Match with Brian Moore, concentration on fewer games and regional orientation so more chance to see the 'smaller' clubs

MOTD is a classic example of a program so bad that we're simply used to it. If someone had the guts to totally revamp it then we'd be sitting here wondering how we put up with that pile of steaming **** for so long. It's not a Watford thing, it's **** for everyone. Like Clive says, the best way to watch it is to record it first and speed through the "so called" analysis, (which always gets me wondering if they know their stuff so well why are they pundits and not managers).

Agreed. People expect too much from it and will always be disappointed. For me it’s just a convenient way of seeing the goals from that afternoon, nothing more nothing less. I’ve got Sky so in reality I don’t even need it for the goals, but if I’m at home I know I can pop it on at 10:30 and see them.

They've a few 80s hoolie wannabees going on about Moo but 90% of their fans are what you'd expect from them (a reasonable sized club with little to crow about for a generation and so no hanger on glory hunter fans) - reasonable knowledge and understanding of the game and awareness of clubs outside of their own.

She’s more intelligent than Lineker & doesn’t feel compelled to make some smirking reference to Lesta every week.
