If you could only listen to 3 albums for the rest of your life, what would they be?

Music Complete was a great album. Real return to form after a couple of below par efforts. Hooky leaving the band seemed to spur the other 3 on.

Selecting only 3 albums is like asking a person which of their children they'd keep/give away.. but here goes..

Now That's What I Call Quite Good- The Housemartins
Must I Paint You a Picture? The Essential Billy Bragg

    Hounds of Love- Kate Bush

Ok two compilation albums.. but why not if you really like an artists whole career. Kate for some soothing female vocals after listening to the other angry lot.

This is such a tough question.

    Green Day - American Idiot
The 1975 - I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware
    yawnmongers - X&Y

    Would be todays picks.

It's BBC 6music's National Album Day on Saturday, to celebrate the whole package of an LP. You should play a whole album, start to finish, from 3.33pm.

I'll be playing 'Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space' by Spiritualized.

    Loud.

I was told that the best live rock & roll album is Jerry Lee Lewis’ Live at the Star Club, Hamburg.

Having listened to it, I reckon it may well be.

Hairs on the back of your neck electrifying.

Prodigious innate talent in harness with a slightly larger ego.

The 50s guys were always playing short sets with half a dozen acts on the bill.

It was a point of honour to never not be last.

When he was informed, indeed instructed, that Chuck Berry would go on last, JLL played the set of his life, torched the piano & strolled off.

    He was a bad boy.

I don't care how good the 1975 are, anyone who releases an album with such a twatish pretentious title deserves to be shot.

Incredibly, JLL is still alive. Likewise Little Richard Penniman.

  13. He was heavily featured in Rock and Roll America on BBC4 last night. He spent a large part of his career convinced he was going to hell for playing the devil's music.

  14. Can I just say that I think that AC/DC are hugely overrated. Saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon with Bon Scott on vocals, underwhelmed. Screechy vocals (which continued with Brian Johnson,) clichéd lyrics and gimmicky overrated lead guitarist. Black Sabbath also banal. I do like heavy rock but it has to be intelligent or inventive. Deep Purple or Rush for example.

I concede it is a snivelling and pretentious title for an album, however it is an extremely bold and diverse release. Huge fan of this album.

Keane - Under The Iron Sea is another album I adore. One of my all time favourite band songs and an extraordinary release.

    Fantastic!

Lou didn’t have a hit before & he didn’t have a hit after.

That album was an act of genius by Bowie &, especially, Mick Ronson.

After all those years, I’d never really got Radiohead until the Rainbows one. A perfect collision of lyricism, catchy tunes & randomness.

That’s what being bred in the Bible Belt does to you. Confusing & certainly confused. Little Richard has spent 10 years as a rockstar & 40 as a preacher. Transfused with guilt, especially about homosexuality.

Pretty much all the 50s rock & roll greats were southern born & pretty much all were god fearing. They felt a glorious tension between their sin & their calling. Luckily for us, their calling won.

What inspired the white boys musically was hearing music sung in the fields, where they worked, led by black voices.

I’m not really sure they stole the black man’s tunes but they were irreparably affected by his spirit.

    Odd programme.

All the featured artists were white.

The single most inspiring aspect of this time for me is that the music smashed age old racial barriers. Jerry & Elvis were pretty much colour blind, as was Sam Phillips who set up Sun Records to give an outlet to black music.

Ironically, he enabled white guys to forge rock & roll.

All this in a time of apartheid in the southern states.

I’m struggling to think of a first song on an album better than Vicious. Man I love that song so much. Love the lyrics on that album too, I’m a big Smiths fan but Morrissey never managed anything as dry or funny as some of the lines on Transformer.

I’m with you on In Rainbows, I’d always been aware of them and liked their singles but I met a friend who really turned me on to them. IR had not long come out and I was about 17, it’s all I listened to for months. Nigel Godrich is a genius, I’ve heard that album hundreds of times and I still hear new things each time.

Actually, if Sue Lawley/the Mods allow the NTWICM series, that could be an outstanding shout.

They are upto #100 & have captured some of the most popular popular music in the post Scullion era.

Which is quite a coincidence as ‘Anyone who releases an album with such a twatish pretentious title deserves to be shot’ was the title of my 1980 punk concept album (available only on cassette).
