Feathers in Ricky, couple of the pubs in Chorleywood and then The Essex when Doug was landlord and the old barmaid who used to constantly forget your order.

Oh, right at the bottom. I lived in the lower half of the road but everyone I knew was up nearer the top end.

Back bar or front at the Boy's Home?

So do I and this is so true. When I was 16/17 (about 20 years ago) I lived near and used to go out in and around Staines. All the pubs were packed to the rafters with underage drinkers. Of all the pubs the hardest to get into was the Litten Tree (now a Chinese) but basically if they thought you were underaged they’d ask you for ID, you’d then fiddle around in your pockets for while pretending to find it, and in the end the bouncer would just ask you for a bank card.

Within about 10 years it has all changed, everybody who wanted to go into any pub would be asked for ID, even if you looked 40 they wouldn’t let you in without ID, because police used to come and do spot checks, if they found anyone without ID the pub would get fined simply because they didn’t ask.

All the pubs we used to visit as teenagers that used to be absolutely packed are all now restaurants. I know things change but getting into a pub and getting served when underaged used to be one of the best feelings. It does make me wonder what all the 16/17 year old kids do now instead, I presume just for round each other’s houses.

As Wilfried Z would say Crazeee!

I was lower half & I was actually born in the house. Oddly, I can't recall the exact number. I was only zero at the time & my folks are no longer around. I always thought it was #66 but when I went back 10 or more years ago, that didn't seem quite right.

Btw, my other half (Oxford Utd) went back to her village with our younger son recently (for City cup game), loitered with intent outside her old place & eventually got a guided tour of the premises.

I wouldn't impose that on St L Rd (lower half).

I was #87. I am pretty sure the house would bear little relation now to how I remember it.

  9. Once we all got motorbikes, the Black Horse on Chorleywood common was a regular haunt, together with, unless my mind is playing tricks, the Barley Mow in Tyttenhanger near Hatfield. I ask the question as it doesn't seem to be there any more. It had about 20 real ales IIRC.

Who remebers the Bushey Pub crawl....IIRC it was 20 pubs ;starting at the top of the hill and working down which was clearly a wiser tactic than starting at the bottom.

Do you remember when facing the house if the front door was more to the left or the right?

(Or, which side was the living room?)

Facing the house, front door was to the right - sitting room to the left of it.

I think it was probably "The Plough" in Kenton Middlesex, we used to go in there at lunchtime while still at school, and sometimes we saw teachers in the lounge bar, we used the the public bar minus our blazers and school ties of course.

The Barley Mow was legendary in my youth because of all those ales. Sadly it closed many, many years ago.

  15. Sad. Am I right in recalling that if you could drink your way through all the pumps (in halves) you didn't have to pay? Probably a myth. I think there was one called Dogbolter which was about 9 %.

I did it for my stag night. We started at the Forresters, across the road to the Devonshire Arms. Last place was a blur but was probably the Victoria before heading to the town centre.

The front bar, I didn't realise there was a back bar until this thread!

I've never heard that but they definitely only served 'Owd Rodger' in halves.

Best thread on here for a while. Mine would have been The White Swan, in Aylesbury town center. I’d have been just 17. A real dive, usually packed with goths, but rammed full of underage drinkers on a Thursday night. Pint of piss-water Fosters was 1.50, and 5 shots for a fiver, before trying to wake up for school on Friday morning and double film studies.

    Lol.

I remember the target amount of money to get together for a Friday night was a tenner, which got you ten pints of bitter, pack of Marlboro Reds and just enough change for some chips on the way home.

  25. I think you know what to do...

  26. Another haunt was Blake's Wine Bar on Market Street before going to the New Penny on Queens Road.

  28. I think it went through about half a dozen name changes, but you may very well be right. I was very, very drunk...
