Good grief! I knew Amersham but didn’t realise you were Chesham Bois too.

You, or I, could have been the ghastly neighbours.

BB, remind me, what’s the Watford link?

Now a Toby carvery. We never drank in the music part-to the right. That was for the "hairies" and they would park their motorbikes by that right side entrance. The "yoof" or whatever we were called then stood in the left hand bar and never the twain would meet.

Used to get a lot of passing trade-on route to Wembley and London games-blimey now my memory is returning

Come on then, chaps, where in Chesham Bois were you? I was St Leonard's Rd & my grandparents (my grandad's allegiance to Watford was what started me on this merry journey) were on Holloway Rd.

Don't worry, the "carding" doesn't really stop anyone.

Pubs and supermarkets were carding long before I hit 18; we never had a problem getting our beer on.

We were actually pretty lucky; one of our group's parents were both full time accounts who went away almost every weekend to decompress. They were fine with us doing whatever we wanted in their house while away...as long as it was in the same state when they got home that it was when they left. Many a quality weekend was spent with stupid amounts of beer, spirits, a takeaway (usually Chinese from Hong Kong House in Tring), a few choice films and some head to head console gaming until we were too pissed to hold controllers.

Their rationale was that we were going to be on the beers anyway (true) so better we do it in a safe environment. Looking back, this was spot on; by the time we all got to uni, alcohol was old hat. We certainly didn't go off the rails like some of the more sheltered types I saw...

I was born in St Leonard’s Rd!

I can’t remember the number but the railway was at the end of the garden.

Then a spell in Clifton Rd, before North Rd.

Btw, isn’t it Hollow Way Lane?

I recall being carted off to a house at the bottom end to be looked after or some such.

    Watercress down there?

You are quite right of course - Holloway Lane. My grandparents lived about halfway down, between the two St Leonard's Rd entrances. A (male) friend of mine lived on North Rd so spent some time there, post Boot & Slipper. Maybe it was you?!

  13. Me too. We used to get regular 'bans' and would then shift to the Southern Cross, later to the Wellington.

  14. Although thinking about it maybe my first drink in a pub was the Verulam on St Albans road on 'talent' night.

  15. We used to trek over to St Albans to the Horn of Plenty for music, saw some cracking stuff there - Streetband (feat. Paul Young)* were regulars. 'Toast' was their 'My Ding-a-Ling' moment unfortunately.

*Not actually billed as Streetband feat. Paul Young of course.**
** When did that ghastly thing appear? What is wrong with "and" or "with"? Don't go breaking my Heart by Elton John feat. Kiki Dee. Under Pressure by Queen feat. David Bowie. **** off.

Bois Lane near Green Lane which is where my mum still is. I had some good friends in St Leonards Road who's parents are also still there. Did you go to Chestnut Lane and Elangeni Schools?

North Road? Very nice. I did a paper round there in my youth, whereabouts were you? I know nobody down that road tipped me at Christmas! It is indeed Hollow Way Lane.
Excellent Butchers in Chesham Bois which is still there, blooming expensive but very good

That was the one with the old Irish fella who always sang 'Pennies from Heaven' under a hail of viciously slung small change from the unimpressed audience?

The Verulam was a pub I considered to be a 'regular' for quite a few years.

Towards the eastern end, near the triangle with Bois Lane.

Now you mention it, I do recall dark mutterings about papers being delivered late.

Mayo Bros, although I did have to look it up.

That was my recollection too, a kinda young Barbara Windsor type, but think it was a Jo Brand type that let us in most of the time! But they were a good bunch and put up with us hanging about and oggling them :)

Oddly enough this is the only pub I was ever refused service in or more correctly, asked for ID. I was 15 and it was after some evening (Milk Cup?) game.

Ah yes, the Southern Cross! Gravitated to there from St. Thomas' youth club across the road when we were old enough (ie. 16). The last time we went there the police raided it one night and most of us 17yr olds (by then) jumped out the toilet windows to escape. A couple of my friends were caught. One night my dad came to give me a lift home and he wondered why I came out the pub and not the youth club. An awkward car journey followed and that was the last time he offered to give me a lift home from anywhere for a long time....

First got served in the Three Compasses in Patchetts Green and then the Otter in North Bushey just down the road from Jimmy's off license who would also regularly turn a blind eye to my purchases while well under age. Jimmy was a nice bloke but a bit of a rare creature being a Scottish scummer. Southern Cross was where I had the first date with Mrs CYHSYF. Only pub I have been refused service was Dunning's Irish Bar not so much refused service but I was wearing a poppy and all the bar staff farked off out the back until I gave up and farked off as well, never been back needless to say.
