    Fauda on Netflix is excellent

The trailer of Manifest on NBC also looked good (although looks a rip off of Lost). Presuming you need a VPN to watch that

Started watching Maniac, two episodes in and it’s hard work.

Also watched one episode of that new Karl Pilkington show, Sick of it. It’s ok, but I wasn’t inclined to watch another.

Maniac was good I thought for a couple of episodes but gets more surreal and odd as it went on. I've given up on it after 5 and read what happens on the web to the end. It apparently goes nowhere.

While we are doing radio no one should miss Rob Newman’s ‘Total eclipse of Descartes’ on Radio 4 and BBC Radio Player. Very funny and very absorbing.

In my undergrad years I was in awe of my fellow humanities (arts) students earnestly repeating passages from some books and certain writings. When I was a post-grad I was quite impressed. and still slightly stagestruck. by the way my fellow humanities (arts) students earnestly discussed what other people thought was meaning of certain books and writings. By the time I'm "doctored" Sokal's made virtually all of the "intelligentsia" look like the chumps/frauds they always were. Also I never found "The Mary Whitehouse Experience" in the least bit funny.

Phase though innit? Even I used to smoke gauloise propping up the bar of the local pub, but I was 19 then. There were plenty of galloping pseudo intellectual bullsh.itters when I went to university, for sure, but you are, if I may say so, getting a bit too long in the tooth to worry about it now.

Newman clearly felt uncomfortable with it all that chummy comedy showbiz uni mates stuff, which he left behind with the stadium tours long ago. His latest stuff is about philosophy, but the grounded view of a middle aged dad and he regularly satirises intellectual pretentiousness. He also does a very good Ronnie Corbett. I cannot imagine you would take issue with the subject matter of the first episode and suspect you would enjoy it from lots of other things you write about.

Incidentally I once went to a ‘radical philosophy’ conference which was 17 sorts of ******** and after a couple of sessions I asked the organisers when this ‘philosophy’ was going to address matters of the real world. He asked me what I meant by the ‘real’ world and so I said ‘that one over there with the buses in it’. He started to ask how I knew the buses were there and so I paid him my lack of respects and left.

I have listened to it (I'm a proper R4 junkie) I just don't find it all that clever and I never found him very funny.

Something's that really stuck with me about "arts" education in this country was my attachment to the RCA* (Dept. of Conservation RIP). The first thing was all of the "foreign" students complaining about how their UK colleagues just regurgitated whatever was in their textbooks. The second was running a charity pontoon** stall at an RCA student's do and discovering that the vast majority of UK students could not "add-up" to 21.

*The most academically vibrant institution that I have ever worked in and the "RCA Art Bar" has to have been the most amazing place I have ever socialised in.
**Chosen as the SU wasn't particularly keen on the name "Blackjack" and it was felt poker would cause too many problems with the rules.

Oh now, I just ignore/laugh at them - I think it's more a guilt/shame shame thing for taking the buffoons seriously at the time.

There are a half dozen or more adult cartoons on Netflix. Some are hilarious (Rick and Morty) and some are just easy viewing (Archer).

Bojack however is insanely good. Its a shame that the first few episodes were so slow to get going, but I guess they had to set the scene. By season 2 it's compulsive.

Is Bojack the one about the bald Spanish/US cop who goes about solving crimes whilst whinging that he never get to play for his footy team ?

Its decent from what I've watched so far.

The best BBC drama in recent years is line of duty though. What a show. If some people on here haven't watched it, I suggest put it at the top of your list. Season 1 is good but from season 2 becomes brilliant.

Raced through Season 1 of "Stranger Things" & started Season 2 tonight. Loving it.

Also on Netflix, "The Good Place" has been recommended to me. Has anyone on here watched it?

I enjoyed Stranger Things when it was first on. I went through it again with my 12 year old, he loved it. The third series is in production.

The "Town and Gown" relationship in the shadow of the dreaming spire* of my Alma Mater** was that students were "tolerated" with clearly defined boundaries of who went where to socialise. I can readily envisage that scene being replayed in "The Pilgrim" amongst the hateful bunch o'cnuts who frequented it but in the nearby "Grapes" it would have lead to someone getting glassed...

I would be very interested in hearing @352's view of this.

Regarding stranger things, the way it ended with the Snow Ball, I thought they missed a trick by not having the third series released at Xmas this year picking up where it left.

How strange - I'm engrossed by it. I put it on at*exactly* 15h33 yesterday and binged on 7 eps. There's some phenomenally engaging characters, acting and sub-plots.

  29. Waiting for Season 4 to apperar on Netflix. What happens to Thandie Newton is shocking to say the least!

Saving Lives At Sea and Ambulance have returned to the small screen over the last few weeks. Some times people do take the RNLI and Ambulance Service for granted. This series of Ambulance focuses on the North West Ambulance Service. Once more it shows a service under immense strain but despite it all the staff maintain their good humour in the face of everyday tragedy and often picking up the pieces of a social welfare system also breaking apart. Their sense of empathy and compassion sets them apart and of course they are genuine heroes each and every day.

And as for the RNLI one can say exactly the same about these volunteers. If you can spare some change send some their way. Both programmes also feature useful advice that can be applied to first aid and being wary of dangers at the beach which many people still wilfully ignore putting themselves and others into danger.

Line of Duty series 4 was added on Netflix last week, I binged through it in a few evenings. The programme has just got better in each series, I thought series 3 couldn't be topped but series 4 brought it to a whole new level. I believe the BBC will be broadcasting series 5 sometime in the new year.

I really, really liked her "Fleabag". I put the first episode of "Killing Eve" on last night thinking that Phoebe Wallace-Bridges "sassy" writing style couldn't sustain an action/spy-thriller narrative and was very, very surprised that I really, really liked it.

And while we're at it (Ho! Ho!) the second season of "The Deuce" finished this weekend - that's really been a slow burner and turned into a very interesting/engaging piece of television that has, surprisingly seeing its subject matter, quite an un-erotic series of performances/characters.

  34. I'd like to give a big vote of thanks to all who contribute suggestions to this thread - without them there would be so much excellent viewing I'd miss. I don't know what others do when they spot something that sounds interesting on here, but I go straight to my Trakt.tv account, search for it and add it to my collection, to be watched later on the Morpheus TV app at my leisure.

A special thanks to whoever it was who recommended Fauda - I binged on the first three episodes last night & think it's excellent (well - certainly better than watching Huddersfield v Fulham).

Now that I'm waiting for Season 3 of "Stranger Things" like everyone else, I thought I'd look for another series to watch that would appeal to the whole family. Step forward "The Haunting of Hill House". Highly recommended for those who like a dose of creepy drama that will, at times, make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. For those with (tween/teen) kids, though, be aware that - depending on what scares them - it may be too much. In our house, the 12/13 year old is fine with it, but the 14/15 year old is giving up on it - she can watch horror films such as "It" and "The Purge" with no effect whatsoever but is affected more by supernatural/ghost-related scares. She found the latest episode ("The Bent Neck Lady - Episode 5) so creepy that I had to go in her room with her afterwards as she couldn't sleep.
