    Good question!
Federer went 13 years between Australian Open wins but not sure of between different events.
One would have to favour Djokovic but Del Boy is such a big hitter,he could blow him away.
Let's hope Osaka makes a match of it and it isn't 0&0 Osaka!

She seems in awe of Serena saying its a honour to play her in a final- mind you Osaka is only 20 so probably knows no-one else!

    Osaka wins!

But that won't be the main story as Serena had a long running row with the umpire calling him a cheat and thief!

    :eek:o_O

Well done to Jamie Murray and Mattek-Sands.

Great news that Osaka has won.

Always good to see young ‘uns coming through.

Good to see the bully bested.

Great result for Naomi Okaka/Stefano Osaka!
If I'm correct Carlos Ramos was the umpire?
    He's normally a sensible official,if that isn't an oxymoron.
Serena has a history of problems with officials at FM,the Sam Stosur episode springs to mind.
It's very hard to argue against her achievements but "the lady doth protest too much, methinks".

She was claiming sexism and all sorts - and quite a few players backed her up it has to be said.

Ramos was the umpire and again he was getting a lot of stick from former players etc.

The first warning was for coaching which her coached admitted but Williams claims she didn't she and then it all kicked off from then!

Her complaint was that it happens all the time - bit like in football everyone does with decisions made.

Probably didn't help Serena mood that she'd lost the first set 6-2 anyway..

Watched the whole thing. Some outlets seem to be suggesting it was a one off remark.

She just couldn't let it go and ended up questioning the umpires integrity after several warnings. She claims stuff about men's behaviour but she wasn't playing against a man, her opponent was a 20 year old girl.

The coaching thing is ridiculous but it's a risk that they took. She should have accepted it and moved on.

If anyone was robbed of anything it was Naomi Osaka of what should have been the greatest moment of her career to date.

Or that she'd just been broken in the second set with the writing on the wall.

Can genuinely say that listening to her rant at the umpire and the nonsense spouted in the press conference that I've never known any sportsperson with the overinflated ego of Serena Williams.

To shout at the female referee who came onto court, 'I've worked so hard for women' was something special.

Then again, anyone who has 'queen' on her tennis bag probably is uncontrollable away from the court.

I feel sorry for Osaka in all of this after doing brilliantly to win her first Grand Slam. She had played a fantastic tournament dropping only one set I believe? Williams is an absolute arse and the fawning over her (especially from the BBC is embarrassing). She claims this is sexist but I'm pretty sure when McEnroe threw a strop in the past or Kyrgios more recently has gone mental they have been called to account. This is basically just a case of her being a sore loser pure and simple and finding any excuse, the chip on her shoulder is pretty large. Bringing her child into the complaints to the umpire as well is daft, all those previous gushing words written here and there about her and her child and how difficult it all is for her, crazy. I'd accept that, apart from the fact she and her partner are multi millionaires so I'm sure they can afford to get all the support they need if required.

    Just a big cry baby.

    Sensible comments here I think.
Serena has used this as deflection therapy.
Play the female card here. Rubbish. She wasn't doing it for women.BJK and Martina have trodden that path to the extent that women now have equal prize money. Whether this is quite as black and white as Diamond suggests is not the issue for me. The right hand side of tennis draws are so hideously paid as to render the whole 'men v women' debate futile. More money should be given to the left hand side of the draw. THAT would be real equality. Only the top eighty men and women make a decent living in tennis. The remainder rely on parents, sponsors or federations to help them compete.
Williams saying she was making a stand for all women is absurd. She was doing it for herself. Every tennis player does,it is a singular game, hence the name 'singles'! Just as daft as Spurs fans bleating that their new ground is 'for the benefit of all clubs'. Puffed up poppycock!
Barry Cowan nailed it earlier on SSN.
I await her apology but I suspect I will be with Bob Marley on this matter.

I am dumbfounded by the defence of the indefensible from other tennis experts.

The umpire could have explained his actions in detail and warned her he would apply a penalty if she continued, but why should he? She behaved like a spoilt child during the match, and a 5 year old afterwards with the but the men don't get told off comments. I hope the tennis authorities give her a ban and not just a fine.

Damn - just seen the footage of the complete meltdown. YouTube removing a lot of the uploads, seems Williams has her PR dept on the case.

This is still up at the moment of posting. Sick bucket required to watch:

Are there any comparable athletes/teams to this drama queen being such poor losers?

Brief-ish summary of whole pathetic episode:
    - Sulky baby is losing tennis match to younger, fitter player.
    - Sulky baby starts to sulk.
    - Sulky baby is then illegally coached from the stands, caught and given code violation.
    - Sulky baby denies this, despite coach admitting it afterwards.
    - Sulky baby then smashes racket after double faulting and losing serve.
    - Sulky baby given second code violation, and thus a point penalty - as per the rules.
    - Sulky baby flips out at umpire during change of ends.
    - Sulky baby is subsequently given a game penalty due to the abuse and previous behaviour.
    - Sulky baby loses match - just as she knew she was going to after the first set - but has ready made excuse as a result of her tantrum.

As posted above - how anybody can defend her is a mystery. Completely ruined the moment for her opponent.

The irony of saying she had a point stolen from her, when she's guilty of stealing the limelight from Osaka after her greatest triumph.

When will it finally come out that she's been on the 'roids' her whole career? Anybody remember when they tried to randomly drug test her, so she hid in her panic room and called the police!! https://nypost.com/2011/11/02/serena-williams-locks-herself-in-panic-room-in-drug-test-mix-up/

In case it's not clear, I'm not a fan.

Shameful oppression of Serena by that umpire.

She's absolutely right that she wouldn't have been penalised if she'd been a male and she was right to stand up to it and call it out.

The match ought to be replayed with a proper neutral umpire in place.

The worst part is the bald faced ******** in the post match interview.

Not sure how Williams is standing up for women but she's certainly representing the loud mouthed & the entitled.

    Actually, it's all pitiful.

Maybe. But the solution is obviously to punish the male infants as well, as opposed to allow Williams to act like a mindless petulant child. I’m genuinely baffled that some former tennis players and presenters are actually supporting her ridiculous tantrums.

It's made me wonder if they're all scared of her. Some of the governing bodies have made crazy statements in supporting her, rather than the good of their game, and if I were in the umpire's union I'd be calling for them to withdraw their services from the next few WTA tournaments to see how they like the alternative.

She was caught out. She threw a tantrum. She wrecked a memorable occasion for her opponent.
She threatened the umpire's career as if she was bigger than tennis.

She's a horrible person that needs a lenghty ban.

Playing the race card, gender card and mother card all in one vile rant because she was losing.

Serena Williams, possibly the greatest female player ever, has been treated disgracefully and there's absolutely no doubt for me that it's a part of the racism and sexism that pollutes world tennis.

That shamefully racist Australian cartoon was outrageous. The cartoonist is the one who needs a lengthy ban.

The crux of the whole affair is Serena's assertion that white male players wouldn't have been treated like that - and that is unanswerable, because it's absolutely true.

The sexism/racism cries are completely ridiculous.

She full deserved every one of those punishments. If a male player would have been treated differently (and you're going to need to prove that with empirical evidence, which almost certainly doesn't exist) then the correct approach is to apply the same punishments to them. The fact people are actually trying to excuse Williams' behavior with whataboutism is jaw-dropping.

There is no version of events when Williams is the heroine here. She was 100% out of the line and watching professional bodies fall over themselves to obfuscate that is sad.

Davis Cup time again without the big 2.
