I think our early ending this window will put pay to this lads move to England. No one is going to want to pay such an extortionate fee for him, he is not that good.

  5. lowerrous

    lowerrous First Team

He could still move soon for a reasonable fee though. Take the example of Ante Rebic, also in Crotia's team - as the World Cup finished lots of the press were linking him with a £50million move to Man Utd. However, in the end it turns out that he is moving this week to Sevilla for €21million.

That’s because they don’t have to pay the ‘English Club’ tax

Considering that Sevilla eventually had an offer accepted of €21million, if Utd came in afterwards and offered €22million then Frankfurt aren't going to then tell United to get lost, are they?!

Just seen on BBC sport that Fulham are looking to bring in Vida, I would love to see us go in for him.

Now he would be awesome. The club have to announce his arrival with him getting out of old Vauxhall with the heading Vida la Viva.

Would be another shocking decision. Welcome to Watford.

This thread was started in 2018 when he probably would have been a good signing. He's now 32 so the perfect age for a Pozzo 5 year deal.

Unless he's undergone a monumental decline he would certainly improve outlr shambles of a defense.

Exactly the sort of player we need to slap our dross into shape

This would be a fantastic signing if he is anything like the player he was a couple of seasons ago.

Which he isn’t. It would be a dreadful signing. But at 32 and unwanted elsewhere by any other club of note, it’s right in Gino’s wheelhouse.

Would have to have a dramatic decline to not be an improvement on our current defenders though.

I can't say I have seen much of Besiktas but Vida is still playing for Croatia which would suggest that he still has some quality.

William Troost Ekong plays for Nigeria.
    Francisco Sierralta plays for Chile.
Cathcart still plays for Northern Ireland.

Yes but in fairness there is a big difference between playing for the likes of Northern Ireland and Nigeria and playing for Croatia.

The problem, if we do sign him, will be the length of contract. At 32 Vida will probably want 3 years. Gino will probably give him 6 years, or something stupid. We will end up with a similar situation to Sissoko.

By the same token, you could easily say that Cathcart and WTE are regulars in the PL - whereas Vida has played 1 game for Leverkusen 10yrs ago and never played in a Top 5 league since. Stats can be used in a number of ways but it won’t detract from the fact that Vida isn’t the answer to whatever question is being asked.

(And 9 places between Chile and Croatia is hardly a lot either)

Unless the question is: Name a defender better than William Troost-Ekong and Christian Kabasele

  26. Burnsy

Which is only a fraction of what we actually need which is my point - there are plenty of defenders better than what we already have but they still wouldn’t be good enough to give us the requisite improvement required.

Anyway, I think we are agreeing on that anyway so no need to discuss it further really!

If we end up signing Vida and getting a player similar I’m terms of quality to Sissoko, on a deal similar to that of Sissoko, I’d be quite pleased.

  28. HeiaWatford

But it won't be. When's the last time he played in a league of any quality?

Oh no don’t get me wrong I think this would be a poor signing all things considered, although I’d have been happy if we’d signed him when we were first linked.

@folkestone orn said we might end up with another Sissoko situation, which would actually be a good thing in my opinion.

    Again he's not the answer.
I'd rather payout a significant loan sum for someone younger, fitter and better.

I'm not sure we will view Sissoko as such a good signing in a year's time. He could decline dramatically at any point

  33. Chumlax

I'm sure that will be a very attractive prospect both to the player himself, who will have no job security whatsoever once his contract runs out at the end of the loan, and to his current club, who will lose any chance at all of receiving any kind of fee for him.

Would be fantastic. Wishful thinking, I imagine.

Would people prefer another centre back over 30 on a decent contract who might not be good enough, or a younger centre back who might not be ready for the PL but can stick around for a few years and hopefully improve?

I just don't understand why the club go for these players, there must be centre backs in the Championship that would be better investments. Off the top of my head Fry, Worrall and Souttar would all walk into our team at the moment whether they're ready or not. Alright January maybe isn't the best time to be going for these players for a team with a limited budget but I doubt we're even taking notice of these players. **** me even Cooper at Millwall would improve as at the moment!
