You can put 2 upfront, but if the opposition 5 midfielders outnumber and dominate our 4 then we end up not having the ball anyway. A well sorted 4231 will normally come out on top of a 442.

We could play a 4411 as a compromise, or even play Deeney as a 10 in 4231, but that just wastes better #10s in Hughes or Pereyra.

    Fix the problem at source.

There’s quite a lot in there that I don’t think will happen. As stated, I expect Success to be brought back in and given an ultimatum of now or never. We can’t keep shipping out a £13m on loan - he’s got talent and he needs a manager to coax it out of him. That’s what I’d be looking to do now. I really don’t expect anyone will pay us what we want for Richarlison given his potential - Gino will hold onto him knowing this I expect. 1 more year and then he’ll be off. Deulofeu is 50/50. I think he enjoys it here from the looks of social media - I think it will come down to just how much he believes he can play for Spain - as he will be further away if he joins us rather than a Sevilla or such. But it’s not guaranteed by any means that he won’t sign.

And we can dream of Cucho. But the chances of him getting a work-permit are slim. I’d like to think we would try though.

I couldn't agree more with that. I think Deeney is a great footballer and could do a lot of good still, but he needs a partner up front. I have no idea why neither Silva or Gracia will play two up top with Hughes/cleverly backing them up

Not only 4 goals for Ighalo, and although all of these are at a lower level, no less than 4 other former WFC players and 1 of our out on loan players have scored for their respective clubs today -

Jakubiak our out on loan player 1 for his team; Theo Robinson x 2 goals for Southend; John Joe 'O Neil 1 for Northampton; Forsteiri 1 for Sheff W and Gavin Massey 1 for his team.

That's 10 goals so far, yet none of our current players seem capable of scoring

Let's forget about the Jakubiak goal as he is still a WFC player, the final score: -

Current WFC Players 0 v 13 Ex WFC Players (Ighalo 4, Theo Robinson 3, Forestieri 2, Assombalonga, Lansbury, JJ O'Niel, Gavin Massey)

I suppose you could add Craig Beattie to that - he scored for Edinburgh City.

I've just emailed the club telling them to re-sign John-Joe O'Toole and play him upfront next game. That was the point of this exchange, right?

I don’t really agree and I think your view is half our problem. You are talking about us playing a formation to suit the players we have up front, we've only looked better playing 4-4-2 because all the strikers we’ve had have suited this best. The same goes for now with the strikers we have at our disposable.

Playing 4-4-2 is just making the best of a bad situation, it’s accomdating players who aren’t up to the task in every other formation we might choose to play. We would be just as good but hopefully better if we had a decent lone striker and binned of our current crop who can only play half decent in a 4-4-2. There is a very good reason why the vast majority of the leave no longer play that formation.

Obviously the tricky part is finding a good 12-15 goal a season lone striker, but we have 5-6 midfielders who are infinitely better footballers than Deeney, Grey and Okaka are. Better to have an extra one of those on the pitch and one GOOD striker, than trying to make a silk purse out of sows ear with our existing sub standard strikers if you ask me.

I know it's a bit simplistic but if you have a lone striker, the opposition defenders know where the ball is headed so therefore know who to mark. Two strikers splits the options giving them a decision as to which one to mark, possibly freeing the other one up.

If you just play long balls then I think that’s true. If you’ve got three or four realtively creative midfielders and decent full backs that can deliver decent intelligent passes to each other then it shouldn’t be an issue. The lone striker is then just another player, but of the ball happens to fall to him in the box he’s got a better chance of tucking it away than the rest of the team.

Bad example but every team who play spurs know half the battle is just trying to stop Harry Kane scoring, but they are very rarely able to.

...because Man City have found it such a struggle to score goals this season playing with a lone striker every game...

Rubbish analogy mate, comparing our squad to Man City's is like comparing Champagne to Stella.

I'm illustrating that a lone striker system has nothing to do whether a team is able to play offensively and score lots of goals or not. Wolves and Fulham are also scoring goals for fun in the Championship with lone striker systems.

PS were I to bother furthering your irrelevant alcoholic beverage analogy, I'd point out that both Champagne and Stella can still easily get you hammered.

Jay Rodriguez is a good shout, I’ve seen a few people mention him and I’d be happy with that move.

I’d also considering getting Britt back if Boro don’t come up

As you say, several have suggested this, but I haven't seen Jay Rodriguez do almost anything of note since that major injury he had at Southampton; definitely had a long term impact on the way he plays, and he hasn't exactly been pulling up trees at Bromington this season. Also he's not actually a straight-up, out-and-out striker, is he.

Dzyuba? He gets paid a lot of money to play for Zenit thanks to the Russian premium/quotas. He's the reason they sold Rondon in the first place.

    Since we stopped doing bants
    Coz of people having rants
    About threads gone off topic
So some of us stopped it
Now the threads are all lame
    Its just not the same
    It's missing threads about cheese
Due to those hard to please
    Or about all the loans
    Coz of members who moaned
    Or about Deeneys weight
Now the threads just ain't great
    So to those I implore
    You moaned now you bore
    You wanted it serious
    So we took out mysterious
    And abandoned high jinx
Now it's threads that all sink
    Now it's boring as ****
    You bunch of soft ducks

That’s just the scorecard from the Blackpool game.
