After his good performance against Argentina Lester apparently have bid 12 million pounds. Not going to happen as likely to be a bidding war after WC.

Everton to make an improved bid per a link on BBC football gossip page. Think we have missed any chance we had.

They also failed with a bid for Diakhaby - seems Silva stole our transfer targets on the way out...

For all the lazy journalism that will see us and Everton linked to lots of players in the coming weeks and months, I think there's almost certainly going to be some truth in that.

For €18mil+ that is being reported in the Turkish press, they can have him. Would have no issues in him coming here but paying that amount for a 29 year old who will turn 30 before the season finishes is ludicrous.

If you are good enough you are old enough. Vida was one of Croatia's best players against Denmark. Very commanding and made some vital clearances. The price quoted is not excessive in today's market if he helps keep your team in the EPL for 2 to 3 seasons. Sometimes it's not just about resale value.

It's not ludicrous if you can afford it. He will no doubt be better than the players we start with at the centre of our defence.

I think you are overplaying his contribution last night a bit, even if I do get the sentiment. Any nation with a half decent striker would have punished Croatia last night. When it comes to Vida, I’m tempted to believe more of the opinions that he is average at best that are littered all over the internet spanning the last few years as opposed to watching a few games at a WC. For the price supposedly quoted, I’m not sure he’s the improvement we need. A classic case of a players price being driven up by tournament form.

I honestly don’t think we will be buying any CB’s at all, and certainly not better ones, unless we shift some of the ones we have. And I don’t think we will. Spending big on the defence doesn’t seem to be part of the plan.

When talking about Vida, let’s not forget that Prodl is highly rated within the Austrian set-up. Belkalem had a good World Cup with a MoTM performance against Germany. I just prefer to look at their history of form at their clubs before using a few international games as a gauge.

So whether I think we will be signing anyone better or not, doesn’t impact on my opinion that £18m for this guy is probably double what he’s worth at least.

And while I understand the view that ‘it isn’t our money, why should we care’ - a club like ours doesn’t have endless amounts to spend so it’s why I worry when we clearly overspend on one player or buy one who seemingly will never play at all.

Slightly off topic - but maybe the club are gambling on Kaboul staying fit this season, so won't be looking for any more central defenders?

Huge risk being as he seems to be made of glass. And even if he does stay fit, has his quality diminished due to the length of time he's been out and the fact he's getting older?

They could also be taking a chance on Wilmot being up to the required level, as well as Navarro being able to play in the centre. Throw in a fit again Cathcart, Prodl and Kabasele, and maybe they believe we have sufficient numbers and quality?? Only time will tell, I suppose (of course there's Mapps and Britos as well).

Kaboul features in the first-day-back vid posted in the pre-season thread, so at least he's fit now........

I think young Ben Wilmot will feature this season and Kaboul, Kabasele and Cathcart are all decent. Enough has been said about the others who can also show real quality so I don’t think we need another. But whoever gets this weird looking Croat is probably getting a PL level player. Too expensive for us though.

Liverpool had bid of £16m rejected. To think a few on here were saying that a deal for £5m or so was too much for a 29 year old with 58 caps for Croatia ?!!

WHU likely to sign Franco Vazquez per bbc gossip page .:-(

Always remember the ridiculous amount of clubs lining up to sign Gary Breen after the 2002 World Cup. This bloke is 29 and every teams scouts must have known about him for years, he's not suddenly become the worlds best defender

Maybe £5mil is too little, but for sure £16mil is too much for him. Sounds like Besiktas are trying to push the price up as much as possible.

I don't think anyone thinks he has. But the market rate for an experienced international defender at his prime isn't sub £5m though it would have been great if Gino had managed to pull it off pre the WC !

Sebastian Prodl is an experienced international defender at a similar age - would you pay £5m for him after last season?

He's 2 years older and past his priome, plus he's an international for a weaker national team. If he was under contract and we were looking to sell I would think we could get c£5m. But this guy for the reasons above would be worth much more.

Croatia are ranked 20th by FIFA while Austria are 26th. Hardly a huge difference. Prodl has played his career consistently in better leagues than Vida. Yet Pr*dl is a player we are probably looking to replace. I think you are reading too much into him having a decent tournament and not enough into his distinctly average career at club level. I don’t think anyone would give us more than £5m for Prodl and I suspect we’d get less.

This is a maxim about young players, not old ones, and with good reason.

With a player of his age, you have to consider potential for improvement, years left at any kind of 'top level', and how much money you would be able to attract for them in the future.

None of these are concerns that are appropriate under this sentiment, except potential for improvement, and part of the reason of why it is appropriate for young players is exactly why it isn't for old ones; there isn't likely any room for improvement, and with a young player you can say 'he's good enough so he's old enough', knowing that he will also improve and learn by playing. That is not the case in the scenario of buying an ageing player.

I'm simply saying that Vida would be worth more than Prodl before the world cup due to being younger and playing more a better national side. Nothing to do with the WC thouh I'm sure that will push his price even higher. As others have said before on here, the FIFA rankings don't really help - there is a gulf between Croatia and Austria.
