    Hello all!

I am a researcher at the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science at LSE. I am conducting a research with The Emotion and Social Relations Research Group at University of Oxford on the emotions football fans experienced during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The study divides into 2 parts. The first part requires you to fill in a 3-minute survey about your favourite team and your basic information. Click on this link NOW if you are interested: http://tinyurl.com/2018wcsurvey

The second part will happen at a later stage. You will receive a 3-min survey through email immediately after two selected matches.

This study is designed to follow the progress of the World Cup (I don't know what will happen!). I hope this will be as exciting for you as possible.

    Taking part in the research automatically enters you into a lottery for amazon vouchers or equivalence totalling £800!!! In this lottery, you could win one of the eight prizes: 1 x £250 (~€283/ $333); 1 x £150 (~€170/ $200); 2 x £ 100 (~€113/ $133); 4 x £50 (~€57/ $67).

Share this link with your family and friends! Your few minutes will definitely help our research and science!

    Thanks a lot in advance.

A researcher at the London School of Economics doesn't know what PHP is? The world is going to hell in a hand cart I tell you.

  5. Do you have any cheese related questionairres? Particularly regarding the emotions people experience when they are mentioned in non-dairy related discussions.

That would be some really worthwhile research.

  6. You’ll find a lifetime of behaviour to research on this forum pal, forget the world cup

Haha, You'd never know. Perhaps one day people would be interested. Like there is quite a bit research on how people respond to discussion about meat in vegan related discussion etc.

I'm sure it does! Human behaviours are always in a black hole. Though world cup is interesting in a way because it's a collective event that lead to exceptional emotional responses.

Do you really need to conduct a survey with cash inducements to study English people's emotions during a WC?

Disappointment, despair and anger should just about cover it.

How do I collect my Amazon vouchers?

Well, it's not really that easy to find participants to complete surveys. And with a longitudinal design, the drop out rate is high and you need a bit of incentives to keep people interested. The money we have is quite limited comparing with many other research groups who are more business-oriented. We can only try our best :/

Hahaa, maybe the results are not that bad. And you would be surprised about how diverse people cope with disappointment against losing teams.

If you win the lottery, we will email the winners and send them the vouchers accordingly.

Your silence maybe suggests that you are using public money in this study.

If so, is this really the best use for it?

Clive, nice view of your pad tonight, only slightly obscured by Ghastly Gary’s ears.

Btw, does one say ‘Arab’ these days?

Sounds like something from Evelyn Waugh.

I believe it's fine provided you precede it with filthy or dirty.

Well, my supervisor may have some funding from the university but I don't think we are under particular research grant to fund this. After all, this project is basically a continuity of my Phd work. I did a similar study 4 years ago. I pay myself to make posts on Facebook.

What we want to achieve is to understand the nature of certain emotions. World Cup is used as a context because people are usually very emotionally invested in the games. Of course, we believe this knowledge is important because our scientific understanding of emotion is not as throughout as we'd like to believe. Even till these days we cannot agree on what "emotions" really constitute.

As a researcher, you do hope your work will have a small impact one way or the other toward the constellation of knowledge. I cannot speak for others in the team but this is what I hope out of this project, even if it's through my naive vision of life.

How do emotions work within the computer simulation we call reality then? What are they for?
