No Joe Hart or Jack Wilshere selected it seems .

Cannot say I am surprised as one has lacked form and the other a big injury risk .

Mind you guess Welbeck will be going and Jack's replacement will be Jake Livermore !

  2. No chance of winning the world cup without Jack Wilshire imo, our one world class player and a fantastic prospect at only 26

No Sessegnon, not even on standby.
    Livermore on standby???
    Cahill over Tarkowski???

I realise there isn’t much Southgate can do with the players available but he’s made a couple of odd calls on this one!

The dreadful Welbeck gets an undeserved place. Would rather have Murray/Barnes/Abraham over him.

I would've taken Sancho or Sessgnon instead - I'm not expecting us to play with wingers often during the tournament but only Young, Lingard and Sterling as wingers doesn't inspire much confidence if we have to switch to 4 at the back. Surprised Cahill got a callup as he's truely past it now. Tarkowski or Lascelles would have been a better option.

I agree with all points. I suspect Cahill has been taken as the squad lacks experience. Personally I think too much value is placed on ‘experience’ at that level anyway.

Sessegnon should definitely have gone. Can’t believe he’s not even on standby and utter dross like Livermore is.

Terrible squad. We will be so boring and turgid. Sideways passing. Little creativity. Slow.

We may get out of the group but our games are going to be so dire to watch.

Would rather Andy Carroll than Welbeck.

If we are losing 1-0 and we need to lump it up the pitch, for a striker to hold it up, Carroll is the best option. Likewise if we are losing then we need someone who can bully tired defenders for the last 10mins, be a threat from set pieces and just be a bleedin nuisance to the opposition, Carroll is the man. Admittedly he might get sent off before he does something useful but taking 3 out of 4 strikers that offer very similar attributes is just pointless.

As others have said, how Cahill is in the squad is just ridiculous.

The only reason I can see for not taking Sessegnon is lack of experience at the top flight, but Sancho has that (albeit only a few games, but he's looked very comfortable playing for Dortmund). Taking Sessegnon would have been a brave, but solid bet. I also don't see the point in taking Delph and Young. One or the other would have been more suitable I think (probably taking Young, swapping Delph out for an actual CM).

No Sessegnon. No Voldermoort (a superb passer of the ball). So not THAT adventurous really despite a couple of double-barreled surname youngsters. I'd have put Sessegnon and Voldermoort above those two.

Maybe what you need to get a pick as a young dark-horse these days is to have a ludicrously convoluted surname.

So, as an aside, when two parents, both with double-barreled surnames (which was once the exclusive privilege of rich toffs) have a kid, how do you sort out its name?

An inexperienced Sessegnon is still a much better bet and bigger threat than an experienced Welbeck.

The squad seems to have 4/5 players who can play 2 or 3 positions on the pitch rather than having proper players for each position.

    Cahill for Tarkowski/Dunk
    Delph for Lallana
    Welbeck for Sessegnon
    Sancho for Livermore (standby)

The squad would have looked far better and more exciting if the above happened.

Shelvey has had a good season and is undoubtedly talented. If he could behave himself, I’d have him over Delph.

I fully expect our Harry to drop at least one massive bollock in Russia, lucky to be there ahead of Dunk and Tarkowski.

My Arsenal supporting friend says that Wilshire has actually been performing well this year and – whilst I had completely written him off as useless – he would probably be a better choice. Maybe he’s too irritating to have around the squad.

Welbeck is limited, but deployed usefully in big games as he works very hard and does the defensive side well. He will probably free up Sterling on the other side to be able to roam more and allow Young to overlap from the back.

Lascelles has played well this year. Much better than Cahill and Maguire. You do want experience at the back, but Smalling was excluded, despite regularly playing in pretty much the best EPL defence this season.

Delph was selected due to his versatility, but Livermore and him should be nowhere near the first team. Even Hughes deserves a chance over Livermore, although I’m rather grateful that Will gets the summer off.

  20. Wouldn't there be a good chance that they'd be married and have the same double-barreled surname?

    Failing that, Rees-Mogg-de-Chair would do.

Delphs a sensible choice, just spent the season playing left back, left mid and centre mid for the champions, bit of a no brainer

Not sure we had to take Trippier. Jones is only in there as he can play 2 or 3 positions

Lets hope we play 4 3 3, doubt it though

Think they're absolutely mental to not bring Shelvey. Would have assumed he's a shoe in frankly.

Agree with most of what you've said Burnsy - However, Shelvey behave himself? Livermore is on the standby list - the guy has had a confrontation with a West Ham fan, and has stolen a taxi in Spain over the past few months.... Really don't understand how Shelvey is worse.

  26. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

I haven’t said he’s worse than Livermore. I’d have Shelvey all day over him. I’d have 99% I’d the homegrown midfielders in the country over Livermore.

And I think the Shelvey issues are overblown somewhat myself I agree. Although the reasons for Livermore doing what he did at WHU were perfectly legitimate and I’m surprised he was so restrained.

  27. KelsoOrn

    KelsoOrn Squad Player

Shelvey has a wand in both feet which gives him somewhat of an unfair advantage in his dealings with Harry (not Redknapp). Once he's settled his issues with Harry and spends more time shagging Bellatrix instead I'm sure he'll get picked.

  28. It may well be the case that a majority of those with double-barreled surnames are of a certain class - one in which the male lines would probably take precedence.

In the less rarefied strata of society it can be down to personal choice and commonsense - whatever each party agrees to.

My point was how do you avoid moving on to quadruple-barreled surnames?

Think it was the Muff vs Newcastle game earlier in the season, and Lampard was doing the MOTD analysis. One of Muff's goals Shelvey didn't bother to track the midfield runner and just stood and watched as he scored.

Lampard said that's the reason he's playing for Newcastle and not Liverpool. He's not got the concentration levels of a top player

Overall I think the squad is exactly right, and its at least one that's young and can be built upon

Fair enough. I saw that too.

What Shelvey does have though is unerring passing ability as exhibited both at the Vic. recently and on the telly. He pings it flat and low over 40 yards or more and straight to feet. Because he's so accurate he can get away with it. Most other 'excellent passers' have to give it a bit more air so the recipient can take a couple of steps one way or another to receive. But that slows everything down.

The only other player who I can think of who does this is Pickford. Many of his kicked clearances are similarly low, flat and accurate.

Yeah but this is the kind of thinking that we've always suffered from. Remember when the national obsession was not having a left midfielder. The solution? Alan Thompson getting a cap, in a midfield that contained Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard and Beckham.

I saw some journalist say the other day that he thought Huddlestone should be included! Madness.

  33. KelsoOrn

What kind of thinking? That maybe our best ball player should be released of any defensive duties so he can concentrate on doing what he does best? Be creative?

The thinking that gets us nowhere is always requiring clones.

The thinking that you have to shoehorn a player into a side just because he ticks a box.

We need to play to our strengths, which are attacking pace and a quality striker. Southgate favours Dier and Henderson as he feels he can use the pace to its fullest, while knowing we have two players that can cover gaps accordingly.

  35. KelsoOrn

    KelsoOrn Squad Player

Who's talking about shoehorning? He's our best passer. Build the midfield around that then. Support him. Dier and Henderson equals efficient but ponderous. Shelvey equals fast and exciting. Dier and Henderson - what pace? Just same old, same old.

Passing the ball quickly and accurately over distance with pace is a rare quality. As rare as a quality striker. So utilise it. Infinitely better than a couple of relative journeymen cluttering up the place.
