Moog and I are having serious problems with weeds in our gardens. Please advise.

    Mostly moss in my case.

Raked out a load more this evening. Gonna sow some more grass on Sunday to see if the higher concentration of grass eventually displaces some of the moss

Spell my username correctly i might just help you ;)

PS You'll have to be a bit clearer on what you call a weed.. afterall a weed is just a plant in a place you dont want it to be. Every plant has the potential to be a weed.. and every plant has the potential not to be a weed. If you get my drift.

Difficult one moss. By raking it out you might add to the problem because the spores are microscopic and easily spread. You are right in thinking that to get the grass growing better will fight off some of the moss.
The best thing though is to improve the conditions. Moss thrives in wet and shady areas, sort out drainage and cut back trees or shrubs causing shade is the best long term solution.

When your single PS and double LLs are swapped about as much as mine then I may be more sympathetic! Actually it did look a bit wrong when I typed it but trying to find a post of yours to verify the spelling felt like too much hard work at the time. Everybody else drops the H from horn what makes you so superior?
Some pictures would be useful here I agree, when I moved in here about 5 years ago the dirt lot on the side of the house was really a small jungle. Weeds bigger than me and spiders bigger than the weeds. Before the conservationists get on my back that last sentence was maybe a bit of an exaggeration. There was only one spider and tho' he wasn't really bigger than me he was bigger than a 10p coin which made him massive me.
Anyways I spent a few months digging up the weeds, removing several skip loads of builders rubble and levelling as best I could the area with a cheap rake and turfed it with what they call blue Grass here....no clue if it's the same or similar to Kentucky Blue but that's what they call it. Turfing took an age too cos you don't buy it in long Swiss rolls rather it comes in small 6" square tiles.

It looked great for the first year then large bits of grass like weeds started cropping up that were next to impossible to pull up by the roots....I think they are all joined together underground anyway. No flowers or any other distinguishing features about them just tufts of long thick grass that grow overnight.

They've almost taken over the lawn now the blue grass is still visible but looks 5% now what it did when it was first laid.

I'll try and do some before and after pictures sometime.

I’m sure we’d all appreciate it but obviously only when you’ve got time and the inclination

Failing that, can you just rock up with the crew of Ground Force and make over my garden in three days?

I am superior.. haven't you noticed

The usual weed grass is something called Poa Annua. It normally crops up in every lawn and is considered a weed because it doesnt wear well and isnt very pleasant looking. Its normal to get it in turf you buy.. if it isnt noticeable at first the seeds are likely to be present.
Having said that it might well be different in a hot climate and it might be a species of couch grass https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=283 or Bermuda/wire grass http://www.better-lawn-care.com/bermuda-grass-weed.html#axzz5G57KyZy9 Both are warm climate grasses.
Have a look at the pics to see if it anything resembles what's in your lawn.

I was going to suggest a lower cutting height.. as often only the finer species of grass survive this.. but reading here it seems Bermuda grass at least actually likes a lower cutting height.
All lawn weed grass species can be eradicated with selective herbicides. I'd recommend asking at your local garden center.. if you have one.

As I mentioned on here before (and I think @Stevohorn found an obscure German link to them) was that you used to be able to buy "scarifier" "prongs" to fit on a Qualcast Concord(e) lawn-mower. Dad had one and used it on his lawn (mossy, weedy, dandelioney, daisey etc) every time he mowed it. It looked really rough during the ongoing treatment but by year two it looked like the 18th green at St Andrews. This was the only treatment it ever received.

EDIT: Presumably this has all the quality build you would expect from something that costs less than 33 quid...

This looks well worth a punt, though, it does make me wonder if I'm falling into my old "buy cheap, buy twice" habits.

You do need to get the seperate handle but all my garden tools are the same brand, just unclip the heads and then hang them up, saves loads of space.

Not only did it get rid of all the moss, the workout you get from it is amazing! It's bloody hard work but the amount of moss if gets up from the lawn is great. I used this in October last year, added loads of sand to my lawn and then overseeded any bare patches, the lawn is looking good league 2 standard at the moment but a few too many daisies growing for my liking, can't get rid of them! Definitely make sure you have no bushed overhanging as well, even a little bit of shade and nothing grows.
