Dawson has been a fantastic stalwart for WBA. Versatile & solid as a defender & a real goal threat.

But isn't he older/more expensive so a poor fit with, what I believe is called, the Pozzo model?

In Burton's draw with Boro yesterday, the Mackem goal was c/o Assombolonga, equalising the effort by Sordell, assisted by Dyer N!

Add Tommy Smith as lino & you would have the classic WFC old boy result.

Jonny Evans (although he'll be going to a top 7 club)
    Oliver Burke
    Butland (again no chance though)
    Bertrand (no chance)
Redmond (if <15m, would be an upgrade on Carrillo and HG)
Romeu (would be an ideal replacement for Doucoure although not as good)

The strange thing is on paper you take Southampton nearly fully!

And even if you pick it apart - Cedric, Stephens and Bertrand - all come in and start.

But they are going down, so something is not right there.

They would be my top 3 across all teams that have potential to go down.

We score goals this season, it's our defense that has let us down. Improve that and buy a proper striker from abroad and we are golden! (again, as we always have been ha)

The reason is that there's some real over-rating of a number of their players here...
Quite a few people have mentioned Stephens, but whenever I've seen Southampton their defence has been as much if not more of a catastrophe as ours, and a number of their fans aren't even convinced he's good enough for the Championship: https://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthr...-see-sold-replaced-in-the-summer#.WsOMgNVua2x
Hoedt is also an error-prone horror show.

Also Redmond - sure he has looked lively against us in the past, but he's considered Southampton's worst attacking player with a weak mentality and no end product, their fans want him gone.

As a side-note, some of the relegation-threatened teams' goalkeepers have been mentioned as possibilities here: Forster, Foster and Butland, but I see no reason to replace Karnezis with any of them. Bizarre suggestions the lot.

I don't think he would be an upgrade on Carrillo, and that's not even a very high benchmark...

"although not as good" - i.e. not an ideal replacement for Doucoure...

Cedric starts for Portugal. Not overrated.
Bertrand has won the Champions League and has consistently performed for 5 seasons now.
Stephens is very promising. And if you look at Goals Against in relation to the rest of the league around them. Saints don’t fare too badly.

No, but if we end up selling Doucoure we could do a lot worse than Romeu who is very under-rated and probably available at a decent price. Not as good going forward as Doucoure but a fantastic DM.

The sum of Soton's parts this season has disintegrated.

I suspect the continual sale of their best player each window has eroded confidence & stability.

Like Sisyphus, as soon as they recover from the last departure, a new one blights the horizon.

    Bound to sap the soul.

I bet that if/when So'ton go down, Everton will buy Bertrand. Mark my words, kiddos.

Every Saints fan I've seen thinks Redmond is absolutely useless, and Charlie Austin would be ludicrous given his injury record, which is a shame given his goalscoring prowess. Couldn't argue with Romeu, and what about Hojbjerg? Would seem to fit the model and Doucoure mould better than most.

For whoever suggested Ramadan Sobhi, again, every Stoke fan I've seen thinks he's utter *****, and the sentiment 'could do with a year in the Championship' has been expressed on more than one occasion.

Luke Ward-Prowse? Would be nice to have someone who can put in a corner and beat the first man.

Slightly off topic - but should Southampton get relegated by 2 points, Doucoure's handball will suddenly seem even more significant for them......

Yeah and he has got another brother Darren Ward-Prowse. Used to be on our books I believe.

If this Dahlberg is anywhere near as good as being made out, I don’t think we need a keeper. Sign Karnezis, give Gomes a player/coaching role and we’ll be fine there I think now.

If we are ignoring positions that we specifically need, then I’d say Ward-Prowse, Shaqiri, Sakho, Milovoijevic, Zouma. Perhaps Gabbiadini and Romeu.

I would not want anyone at all from WBA, Swansea or Huddersfield.

And Bertrand is better than what we have but I’m sure there is better out there who won’t cost £20m and want a huge wage.

  16. Burnsy

Stephens is not rated highly by their fans. He’s a young, English CB and they are usually coveted - not heard him linked with anyone which is usually a good indication.
Bertrand is ok. No better than that though and his wages/fee wouldn’t be worth it to a club like ours. And saying he’s a CL winner is like saying Djimi Traore is as well.
Cedric I can agree with but we don’t really need a RB.

It is truly amazing that Southampton are genuine relegation material. That's a squad that should be top 10. That handball by Doucoure could relegate them.

I don’t covet young English CBs.

In fact, I would run a mile from any of them, from Dopey Rio onwards.

Stones, even dimmer & more error prone.

    Keane. Disappeared from view.

Man U Jones. Mentally feeble & physically feebler.

Arsenal one’s. The vapid progeny of the Gaffer.

CB requires heightened positional sense & toughness. Knowing & showing you’re tougher than the CF.

    Get Angella back!

And Angella to lay a massive cable in the Dean Court centre circle, preferably on the 26 second mark.

We should sign Gibbs. He's really proven himself top top level at West Brom.

Sorry, are you suggesting you would not want Rio Ferdinand, at his level as an active player, playing for Watford?

West Brom - Foster Gibbs Dawson Rodriguez Phillips
    Stoke - Butland Shaqiri
Southampton- Forster Stephens Bertrand Lemina Ward-Prowse Gabbidini Redmond (I think Southampton will stay up)
    Huddersfield- Mooy Hogg Ince

Oh I know. It baffles me why they replaced Puel, a good manager with a poor style, with Pellegrino, a poor manager with a worse style. And now Hughes! I assume they'd have gone for Silva had he not still been in severance talks with us, may not have worked out, but surely more inspiring than Mark Hughes.

  28. RookeryDad

I feel he was hugely overrated.

A litany of unforced errors. At the level at which he played, his team were a goal down before they started many times.

    Similar to Stones.

Hilarious if he has to prove himself second top level there, too.

Bauer at Stoke. Solid full back and would make the team bus a more entertaining place tinkling the ivories. No problems in conversing with his team mates either. Speaks multiple languages. Get Vydra back in. Let go far too early. With players like Pereyra and Hughes capable of threading the needle we need a finisher who plays off the last defender and is a comfortable one on one finisher.

Rio Ferdinand was a brilliant defender in his peak. He would be the star defender in every team in the league if he was still playing.

Stones has absolutely nothing on him. Entirely different league of player.

Ndaiye has also been excellent for Stoke since his return from injury.

I'd take him as a replacement for Doucoure/ Capoue.
