Arsenal 3-0 Watford FC - 11/03/2018

I had beer with a couple of football tourists before the game. Father and son over from Dallas during 'spring break', mainly to see Man Utd v Sevilla, but had been to West Ham v Burnley, had away tickets for our game, and were in the Stoke end on Monday night for the game against Man City.
They enjoyed the game, impressed with how we kept going for 90mins - 'unlike the home team we saw on saturday'

Based on the number of selfies being taken in front of me it looked like most of Row 1 in my section had been sold through ticket agencies rather than the club.

The view from the front reminded me of the old away section at Roots Hall, with the pitch at eye-level if you were at the front.
It brought back memories of a Boxing Day there in win (1992 probably according to the archive).

    (sorry still catching up)

I take it there aren't any decent pubs for football in your neck of the woods hence the 12-hour round hike? ;)

Nice pub the Fox & Hounds, went there and another pub in Bushey (think it was the Railway Arms) regularly during the 2006/07 season as they were good for showing 3 pm KOs, don't know if that's still the case and the powers-that-be have clamped down on that.

Your point is an obvious one. I’m not sure why anyone is disputing it, other than the fact he shows occasional ‘pashun’.

Holebas isn’t our worst player in general play, but consistently switches off in key moments.

Because of that lack of concentration, he needs to be the first player replaced in our starting 11 in the summer. He’s just too much of a liability.

But highgrade's great grandpa was already hanging out down at the rubbish dump in anticipation of the first home fixture.

Where is the lovable scamp anyway?

Ha! Not a six hour round trip anymore. I've now relocated back to Ricky from Edinburgh. So more like a 10 min round trip.

The Fox and Hounds, Croxley was the first boozer I ever drank in. Late 1970. 1 shilling and tenpence a pint of mild, one shilling and elevenpence for bitter. So both under 10 newpence.

It's still rather a good boozer to watch a match in. But what p.ssed me off yesterday was an almost total lack of 'Orns. Certainly no shirts.

It's the third boozer out of the Vic. towards Ricky. Harvester/Two Bridges, Red House, F&H. So why no presence except one who sat on his hands throughout? I really don't take kindly to being outnumbered in my own boozer by Gooners.

    Don't worry. They knew it.

Blame zonal marking, not Holebas. The ball didn't reach Holebas - who also had to have an eye open for Aubameyang behind him.

Yep. Holebas at fault. Asleep when Elmeni played the key pass.

Holebas was aware of Ozil and stepped forward to let Ozil run offside. You're criticising where none is due.

Poor analysis. The problem stems from Mapps' header straight to an Arsenal player. Holebas is left marooned by the header. Aubemayang is not his man to track. Mapps comes out of position to try to solve the problem he's caused, allowing the gap for Aubameyang.

By the way, this is the incident where someone else on this thread has used a still shot to blame Holebas. You can't use stills to apportion blame. That's an Alan Shearer level of poor punditry. Look earlier for where the real problem occurred.

Probably same place as Nnnnnn. Maybe the great forum in the sky ? The average age of members seems to be about 87 :D. Lets face it, there's no other reason to suddenly stop posting on the forum without saying goodbye !

In fairness to HB1, he did post a motion picture from the Brighton away game to similarly illustrate defensive problems leading up to their goal. Perhaps he could provide one for each of the build-ups to Arsenal's first two goals then we as jury can decide if Holebas was that much to blame?

Why would anyone go to the trouble of writing or, for that matter, reading all this??!! HB1 might be making a fascinating point, but I'll never know

Elmeni must be one of the worst players to play for arsenal in the last 20-30 years, yet he ran the game because he didn't have an opponent within 10 yards of him all game. We sorely missed Cleverly yesterday, as at least he would have injected a bit of urgency in closing them down. They were sauntering round like it was a training game - exactly what not to do against them

So basically you believe Holebas is a fine defender and is not to blame for any defensive problems.

That’s fair enough, if that’s your opinion. My view is different to yours.

He did say goodbye. He said he was moving permanently to Germany with his german missus post Brexit and wouldn't be posting on here anymore. It would appear he's as good as his word.

Shame really. I liked the lovable half-Scouse brickie. Disagreed fundamentally over Brexit though.

I have frequented all of those. For my wife's 40th we took over the upstairs of the Fox and Hounds. She's lucky she made it that far as she gave up her season ticket at the Vic a year after our first daughter was born - some excuse about babies and time - huh - no commitment.
Surprised that your first boozer was not nearer the school Kelso - we used to go to the Horns or Two Bridges with some of the teachers.

In other news: does anyone else hate those big corporate flags they wave at the Emirates whenever Arsenal score a goal? It’s being copied by other clubs now. I wouldn’t say it’s ‘everything that’s wrong with modern football’ but it’s certainly a symptom - another element of manufacturing the atmosphere at a game.

    Not too concerned.

We looked pretty good going forwards, could’ve scored a couple, should’ve scored at least one. Arsenal scored their goals at the right times to kill us off but 3-0 flattered them.

Deeney was always missing the penalty.

It’s like the out of office message, often used by Americans: I’m traveling so will only have intermittent access to the interweb.

NYC is appalling for mobile access.

Oh and Phantom of the Opera.

Maybe the office in each of our care homes should also tune into WFCF.

A failure to post within any 45 minute period would be a sure red flag for Matron.

Well, we also beat Arsenal twice in 2017 and Man Utd the previous year, but we are still yet to beat a top 4 team (and looking at the table that looks likely to stay that way). Still we did manage a couple of draws against Liverpool and Spurs, and assuming they stay in that position, that's our first Premier League points against top 4 opposition since that famous Anfield win in the heady summer of 1999, so some progress.

I can't see us getting anything at Liverpool either, but that's not surprising - apart from Muff's 3-0 at Chelsea, just about all the scalps this season have happened at the home of the lower placed team.

I don't think I ever went anywhere with the school other than gate-crashing a trip to Stratford. Certainly not to the pub. Anyway, I think I'll try the Red House next time. Maybe all the Croxley 'Orns are in there.
