    Take Shelter.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. It is rather slow paced, but well acted with some nice landscape shots and a consistent logic throughout. The film revolves around whether the central character played by Michael Shannon is going mad or is indeed getting genuine premonitions.

Just got back from seeing, what I can only imagine was pitched at the film's producers as
    ..."

But I have to say it was great fun and I absolutely loved it.

I didn't think it was that good...typical Guy Ritchie make everything cockney and it didn't work for me.

However, one Guy Ritchie film I absolutely loved was The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

    I found that film annoying...

I've got a rifle in my hand, instead of shooting him in the back of the head when he's unconscious, i'll hit him across his back, then drop the rifle and run away...that'll do the trick

Watched 'Jason and the Argonauts' (1963) and 'Clash of the Titans' (1981) again last night, bit of a sucker for the old Harryhausen stop-motion films. Hadn't watched 'Clash of the Titans' for a few years since I was given a DVD way back, still as good as I remembered from first time round.

Saw Wonder Woman the other week, was alright, thought Chris Pine's acting stood out more than Gal Gadot who I found a bit bland.

Logan Lucky - Didn't really get the film, was it meant to be a comedy or an action movie. If it was a comedy it missed it by a mile. Daniel Craig was great in it though.

About 4 weeks ago I did go and see Dunkirk, it was alright but not fantastic but I agree with other posters that the dog fighting scenes were very good. I went to see it with my brother who's a history teacher, he was very disappointed.

Watched la La Land....I know, I've already quoted it in the most disliked film thread...but I really hated it.

I'm a big fan of Gene Kelly and those 50s musicals - Singin' In The Rain, one of my all time favourites and let's me know Xmas is here - the jazz was great but no chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone...it felt flat and dull and I just didn't care what happened to them throughout the film,

Just got home from watching American Made.

Personally I was disappointed. For all the great reviews and write ups it received over here in the States, I've left thinking, why?

Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, but the hype it received made me expect so much more. That is honestly how I would describe this movie, they could have done so much more to make it better, it just feels like it is lacking something.

XXX the return of Xander Cage. Actually not that bad in a bang crash wallop James Bond type of way. I like films where you don;t have to think occasionally. Sets up a franchiss for one if not more spin-offs. Looks like Mr. Diesel has learned from F&F.

Just got back from watching “Thank You For Your Service.”

Very insightful movie of what soldiers go through after fighting for our freedom.

This movie is based on a true story so it definitely chokes you up even more because it is so real.

This movie definitely affected me when the main character tries to re-immerse back into his family and everyday life. Being somewhat of a new dad (my son is 14months old), my heart broke for what these men and women must go through when trying to get back into society.

I would recommend everyone to watch this movie.

    The Balloon Goes Up (1942)

Watched this little gem on the new TV Channel Talking Pictures that's appeared. I'd guess they've got the rights to some vast archive of old British films from around the 1930s to the 1970s and there's some treasure amongst the rubbish.

This one was a sort of feel good war propaganda movie. The sort of thing you can imagine Captain Mainwaring taking the platoon to see at the cinema. There wasn't much propaganda in it though - it was mainly comic and centred around a very funny double act called Ethel Revnell and Gracie West. Ethel is over 6 feet tall and Gracie is less than 5 feet, so they called themselves The Long & Short Of It and worked together their whole careers. Ethel was definitely the funnier one of the two, with Gracie playing more of the straight woman. Ethel does a thing frequently where she sticks her bum out and crouches down and walks about like an ostrich. Very comical.

Most of the comedy is very fast-talking of the sort that I remember my grandparents thinking was very funny. A lot of music hall vulgarities and word play. Unfortunately there were no subtitles and the sound wasn't great. With all the speech changes that have happened in the intervening years and the fact that the two gals were both cackling Cockneys, it was a bit hard to follow sometimes - but very, very smart and well done. The big tall one, Ethel, reminded me of a much, much funnier Miranda Hart.

The story line isn't much, but by accident they get inducted into the women's RAF and put in charge of a barrage balloon. There's an interesting few minutes showing how they winched those suckers up and down and towed them off and stored them in aircraft hangers. As ever, the duo avoid getting caught and do a few musical numbers too. Ethel does brilliant baby noises! They catch a Nazi fifth columnist (by accident, comically and inevitably) and make him say "Heil Churchill!" and "Heil Stafford Cripps!" and then look at each other and say...."Who else we got?" - like I say, very funny and a little bit disrespectful to authority throughout.

The film finishes with a rousing patriotic song and a close up of the two grinning gals who give the thumbs up to the camera.

I Googled Ethel Revnell (the tall ostrich walking one) and found she continued working long after Gracie retired. Apparently she lived out her days on a houseboat moored to an island on the Thames near Molesey and was a well known character around there. She died in 1978 aged 82. Gracie died in the 1980s.

With all the current pretentious Holywood cack around, Hornets could do worse than check out some of these old British films. 4Cyclones and I loved it. Cifriana and Lilly Long Tongue thought it a pile of old shyte...but each to their own.

Was stuck on a flight to Vancouver and watched Pacific Rim for the first time. Giant robots = cool. Worst acting I've ever seen.
Saw the other day they're making Pacific Rim 2 with some of the same actors, hope they do a much better job this time.

These restored gems are from Criterions 100 Years Of Olympic films. An enormous box set retailing at around £200 and something which I will probably buy in the near future.

1912 Olympic football final. The GB team were really an England amateurs team featuring players like Liverpool great Arthur Berry.

Note the prawn sandwich brigade leaving the hospitality section empty just after half time in what is still a famous old stadium the Rasunda.
The 1924 Olympic finals between Uruguay in the pale shirts where they astonished European teams with their individual technique, movement off the ball and flair in what could be described as the first unofficial World Cup.

I try to see a few of the Oscar nominated films before the ceremony to see if my opinion is shared by the Academy. It isn't often.

    Anyway, recently I've seen :-

    The Post...........................................................................Disappointing & overhyped
Darkest Hour...................................................................Not bad. Gary Oldman is very good
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri...................The best of the bunch; I really enjoyed it. Frances McDormand is sensational in it.

Chips. Have watched the original TV series I feared the worst. Actually wasn't bad, a couple of bloody funny moments.

Has anyone seen Dax Sheppard and Zack Braff (Scrubs) in the smae room together though?

Agree with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - very very good film.

Mother! was an interesting film, as an athiest it made me think why is religion still a thing.

One under the radar which I really enjoyed was 6 Days - about the 1980 Iranian Embassy raid by the SAS.

The Shape of Water was weird but enjoyable.

    I really enjoyed I, Tonya

Jumanji - Welcome to the jungle...meh

The Disaster Artist was very good - I'd recommend watching The Room (not the Oscar winner with Brie Larson) it's the worst film ever made, but so bad it's brilliant.

Possibly the wrong audience on here, as I'm guessing there aren't an awful lot who are fans of musicals. But all four of our clan - me, Mr HH, the 11 year old and even the stroppy 14 year old - loved "The Greatest Showman". Obviously if you go to it thinking it's a "warts and all" account of Barnum's life you'll be disappointed. But if you like a feel-good cheesy romp with catchy songs and great song and dance set pieces, it'll hit the spot for you. I can see exactly why the critics hated it and loved the more pretentious, cynical La La Land. And that's why I ignore 90% of what pretentious film critics say - we all much preferred this.

Finally saw Blade Runner 2049. I liked it. The atmosphere and ambience are cool. Could have done with less Harry Ford and CG Sean Young though. Ridley Scott just works for me. I get why those who disliked it felt that way though.
