New season, hopefully more entertaining both for us in Friuli and for you.
Lots of very promising lads in the team, we hope they will blossom.

What'd you think of the players yesterday? Was unable to watch game.

Didn't watch myself but it did sound like Udinese had a solid game. The local Huddersfield press had a bit of a dig at the visitors "stereotypical" antics but conceded that Udinese were the better team, especially in the first half.

Particularly impressive considering that Udinese have an extra week before the start of their season compared to Huddersfield.

Indeed. Lasagna was quite spicy from my understanding.

Can any Udinese fans (@sherlock ) know why Bruno Fernandes was sold for so little? I thought he was very highly rated at the club and always impressed me whenever I watched him for Portugal U21s and Udinese. Now he's playing for Sporting and is apparently one of the best players in the league. For €8m he would've been superb backup for Pererya for us... :(

Sherlock, what do you make of Udinese's poor start to the season? What do you think have been the main reasons for this?

  8. reids

Having to play AC Milan and Roma in their first 6 games certainly hasn't helped and the games they've lost they've only lost by a single goal, i'd imagine they'll be able to turn it round

we'd beat them 10-0. That must be really irritating for their fans.

Plus, if they unearth any gems, we'll simply take them off their hands.

    LOL

  10. LOL? I hope you realise that Udinese will always be closer to the hearts of the Pozzo family than us, and any crisis that they have may well result in resources being diverted?

    Precisely.

Udinese have had a dreadful start to the season. Do these people think they will be taking richarlison and doucoure off us in january if udinese are in the bottom 3?

    ******* LOL

Don't get why you're taking delight in Udinese failing so far considering what they've done for us. Each to their own.

Italian football fans tend to be complete arseholes. I see no reason why udinese fans would be any different, so I find this whole situation amusing.

It just seems disrespectful to Sherlock who does take an active interest in us as well as Udinese, his actual team and provides good insight into how things are going at their end and general perception of us overseas.

Depends what you mean by ‘resources’? They won’t get any of our 25-man squad...unless it’s a fringe player who we replace with a better player in January. Someone like Djedje? But why wouldn’t he have gone in the last window - and I can’t see him being too keen on staying anywhere that’s connected to the Pozzo’s. But I can’t think of any other players we have that would go there. I will always be grateful for what the Udinese link has done for us. But is it not seemingly coming to a natural end? The standard of Serie A gets worse and worse each year. And so do Udinese from where they were a few years ago. I don’t want to see them struggle but I don’t let our links cloud my judgement when I look at their results and their squad and see they are pretty poor now. Maybe some money could be filtered their way somehow, but make no mistake - Udine maybe the Pozzo’s spiritual home but it’s not at the centre of their business anymore. We are. And for as long as we are in the PL, it will remain that way and the gap will get larger with every passing season too. Gino’s Dad is not getting any younger and I really wouldn’t be surprised to see Udinese sold on if a reasonable offer were made. Karnezis and Wague should be the last time we ‘visit the well’ if you ask me.

If the Pozzos were clever about it (and I imagine they are), I'd propose a shift in both teams philosophies. As we cement our position as an established PL team, we spend more on youngsters like Penaranda, Richarlison and the like. Obviously, many of them won't be ready for the Premier League instantly, which is where Udinese comes in and acts as a feeder club (look at what Man City are doing with Girona and NAC, Chelsea with Vitesse and Red Bull Leipzig with Salzburg) giving them vital experience and preparing them ready for life in the Premier League. Obviously without the money that Chelsea/Red Bull/Man City have we have to be a bit more careful with our spending, but this is certainly the model I'd adopt if I were in charge. Both teams benefit, everyone's happy.

Yes, because we took resources away from them. Now we're in a position to give it back and help them up the table - why would they be against that?

  25. Relegation Certs

    Relegation Certs Squad Player

because who would want to be a feeder club to a team like watford?? It would be bad enough if it was man city or chelsea, but a minnow like us?

Every time one of their players got good, they would know we would step in and take them back. I cant think of a more depressing scenario.

RBL, Man City and Chelsea can all afford to have a succession of feeder clubs that are obviously inferior to them. Whilst we are getting better and Udinese aren’t, the gulf is still to small for that kind of relationship.

Are we? Regardless of the riches of the PL, Watford still don’t really run at much of a profit. We tried to send them Peneranda - didn’t work. We have raised our profile a lot over the past 2+yrs and Udinese have gone south of competing for Europa League spots in Italy. The game in Italy isn’t doing well financially either. The fact of the matter is that they look like they are going the same way as Granada. The PL rules of having a squad of 25 also means that there really isn’t any played to send their way.

  28. reids

    reids First Team

We were hardly complaining when we were essentially a feeder club for Udinese were we?

  29. reids

    reids First Team

As I said, obviously we don't have the finances to compete in that aspect yet,
but as we cement our position in the league we'll be able to take more gambles. Sure Penaranda didn't work out, but it hasn't anywhere he's been (other than Granada), and players like Behrami etc who no longer serve a purpose could still certainly do a job for Udinese. The 25 man squad would actually help the model if we were to adopt that - if there's no space for someone (like djedje) then off to Udine they go.

As far as I can remember we just took players from them. We never weakened our team by giving them a decent player we needed.

  31. reids

I'm not saying we weaken our team, just send players who aren't ready or not needed (see Behrami and djedje)

I think that's probably the case with Giampaolo, who from everything I've read it Udinese through and through.

Gino...I'm not so sure. He seems to be not only more outward facing than his father, but is also relentlessly pragmatic. It would not shock me at all to find that Gino Pozzo has little emotional connection to Udinese.

What do you make of your squad for this season then, Sherlock?

Who are the youngsters to keep an eye?

How's Simone Scuffet's delevopment going? I see that you have a 39 year old Argentine in goal today, and Scuffet and Davide Borsellini as GKs on the bench! Is it normal to have 2 keepers as subs?
