The 7 named on the bench last week were: Pantilimon, Pr*dl, Femenía, Watson, Capoue, Richarlison, Gray

There were already 2 midfielders and 2 strikers, it wouldn't have been advisable to have put Hughes or Success on the bench as a sub GK and a couple of defenders were required also. One could argue that Success and Hughes could have displaced Watson and Capoue but we needed a defensive minded midfielder so they couldn't displace Watson and maybe since the reported run in with Silva that Capoue had knuckled down and deserved the place on the bench in front of them.

When we name out 25 man squad along with some U21s, without injuries and suspensions some of them will miss out in the named 18 each week.

He hasn't posted anything on instagram for over a month. He did seem to be addicted to it beforehand. Wonder if Silva has told him to focus on his football...

  9. As he hasn't managed to displace the completely hopeless Amrabat you have to question if he has any future at the club

I have a feeling he might be moved to Udinese

Can't see Gino giving up on him just yet, wasn't he our record signing before Scarface?

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but Success seems to favour playing on the left wing. Even against Bristol, Richarlison was moved over to the right to accomadate him playing on the left.

Does anybody else think he would be more suited to playing on the right? From what I've seen he's more successful when taking players on down the outside rather than cutting in, but he then has to cross with his weaker foot or cut back at the by-line. Also when he cuts in he often tries beating 1 too many players and losses possession or snatches at his shot because he's had to rush it.

Unless we get a few injuries I can only see him being a squad player this season, but it would be nice to see him fulfill his potential with us eventually.

  14. I agree. If he goes on loan to Turkey, it would suggest to me the writing is on the wall for him.

For me, he should stay and be given a fair chance to get into the side.

I suspect Silva is just putting on a good PR face in public.

Sure the clubs have had a few strong words in private!

Yeah , I still have high hopes for him . He's got the ability to change games but lacks tactical and defensive discipline.

Am hoping time with Silva and watching Pereyra, Carillo and Richarlison in training each day will take him to the level he needs to be .

Do you think you can greatly improve decision making, or is that something innate? Even when he was playing well at Granada and his confidence was high, his decision making at key moments was abysmal. I think that for forwards in particular, they either have the ability to see the correct shot/pass or they don't, and from what I've seen of Success, he's in the latter category. He'll still cause teams problems because he's fast, powerful and unpredictable but I'm not sure he'll ever amount to much and wouldn't be that surprised if his move to us was the pinnacle of his career.

I think you could say the same of Penaranda and even Richarlison.

They are young so I think they can all improve through experience. Both Penaranda and Success have got some catching up to do after both going off the rails a bit but I've not given up on them....yet.

My impression of Peñaranda when he played for Granada was that quite often he saw the passes but chose not to make them as he thought he could do it all himself (something he should grow out of). I saw him play for Venezuela's senior team at the same time and he played completely differently, his decision making was far better for the team as a whole. Even at Granada he played some passes that I don't think Success would ever even be aware of.

I don't see a lot wrong with Richarlison's decision making - even when he's been missing chances recently, it's been the right idea but just poor execution. His footballing brain is much better than Success'. Cucho Hernandez, the 18 year old we have on loan at Huesca, looks to have the best game intelligence of all of them to me (from the weekly highlights I've been watching).

Yeah, you are probably right. Success is definitely the worst of our youngsters as far as decision making is concerned. I suppose I'm still trying to be optimistic that he can come good given time, dedication and experience.

I guess his recent adventures off the pitch shows that his lack of judgement is not just when he's playing.

Its a good question SLB. But I do think decision making can be improved, for sure.

Of course, it takes a good brain and a good teacher. As a youth player he may have only been in situations where he could use his strength and innate talent to get him out of situations because he was so good that he had no pressure to develop the side of his game that relied on decision making.

For instance, there is a current trend in youth coaching called Bio Banding.
This groups youth players by their physical, bodily age rather than their actual age. The thinking being that a smaller child struggles against kids that are the same age but physically bigger.
Interestingly, they find that smaller kids develop technical and decision making better than bigger kids because this is their best option to progress. Conversely , Bio Banding also helps bigger kids because they cant just rely on their physical superiority and have to develop the other side of their game.

Belgium is one of the world leaders in this approach, which is a major reason why we are seeing a surplus of exceptional players coming from this country. De Bruyne was Bio Banded.
I recently read a quote from a Belgium Youth International coach describing how De Bruyne never really stood out to impartial observers but all the Belgium youth coaches knew he would make it because his decision making was so good.
He just needed to be isolated from bigger players that would muscle him off the ball before he got the chance to express himself. Southampton are the UKs leaders in Bio Banding which has lead to Oxlaide Chamberlain and several others. Watford academy are also looking at this more and more.

Theres lots of articles on this.. Here are a couple , but theres many more if you are interested.

Getting back to the point about Success...

Hes a very strong, powerful player who may have relied on this instead of learning other sides of the game.
Now he is under the tutelage of Silva and playing with intelligent players, theres no reason why he cant incorporate this into his game .

If anything its easier this way around, because you cant teach a player power, strength and intuitive skills but you can teach decision making.

I remember a young Ronaldo coming to the EPL. His decision making was really poor. In his first season he had the worst shots to goal ratio in the whole league, because of it.
Because of his own dedication to excellence and very good tutelage he became one of the best in the world.

Im not saying that Success will become that but I do believe strongly in the potential for human growth. Its about reining in the intuituve side of your game a little so that your brain can double check your decision before you act.

Interesting thing about bio banding, as I've previously stated I coach youth rugby, on a recent coaching course we were told that it is not allowed by the RFU despite the nature of the game, yet it is common practice in New Zealand and the Pacific islands.

Very true. New Zealand are I think the creators of the concept or at least the first to implement it. Purely because a lot of the Maori kids get big at a young age that they needed to find a way to allow smaller but talented players to come through as well.

All Blacks are arguably the most successful international sports team in history especially considering its such a small country, so they must know a thing or two.

These comments seem pretty damning from Silva - comparing Success and Cathcart's recoveries from injury in his press conference yesterday:

''Craig looks closer than Isaac. Even when he was injured for a long time, Craig never loses his fitness. He’s focused, he takes care of himself and he looks in a good condition, although of course he needs more minutes during the week [in training].''
