Any of the older members on here remember this cup game from 1987? Looks a cracker, just before my time as a supporter! What happened after this game? Assuming Walsall back then were in Division 3 (League One)?

Yes....I went to this and I went to the replay as well, which we won 1-0 thanks to a John Barnes goal.

We draw the first game 1-1 at their place, then 4-4 at the Vic. It was a crazy match, similar to the game against Harlow in the 4th round, a few years earlier, which we won 4-3.

Remember it well as my Grandma was a Walsall season ticket holder. Went to all 3 games. There was a little bit of niggle after the third game I seem to remember

Yes, went to this game. A young David Kelly up front for them who had a cracking game. Great atmosphere that night.

Part of a remarkable run that saw us go to at least a 2nd replay in FAC games for five seasons running.
Starting in 84/85 when we had three 5th round games vs "them" In the 85/86 season we faced three 4th round games vs Man City, then came Walsall. In 87/88 the third round tie vs Hull City went to three games and finally we topped it having three replays to see off Newcastle in the 3rd round. All bar the first season, against you know who, we went through to the next round.

Here are the goals from the first and last game against Walsall and yes they were in Division 3 at the time.. trying to do a "Watford" on us..

went to all three, the 4 - 4 is still one of my fav games ever, if i remember correctly they almost won the first game with a late shot that just shaved the post in the last few minutes, got the special train to both away games, over 20000 at the vic that night and walsall bought about 6000

I saw Craig Shakespeare was turning out for Walsall in that 4-4 game! Also did Barnes leave for Liverpool in 1987?

Wasn't the replay won due to a Walsall own goal? Andy Dornan(sp?)

Those were the days.....unlimited FA Cup replays. The record was 6 matches (Oxford Utd and Alvechurch in 1971)

Not sure.....I remember Barnes swinging in a cross and it was missed by everyone and went it. Could have been a deflection though I guess. Just plucking this out from memory.

Yes great days. I remember a sheff Weds v Everton epic from around same time as that Walsall game. 4 game I think. Same as our epic verses Newcastle in 1988.

Only just realised that Craig Shakespeare was in Wallsalls lineup

Yes. I went to all three. Walsall just wouldn't lie down and could very well have won any of those matches. I vaguely remember the third as a bit of an anti-climax: I think both clubs knew too much about each other by then and cancelled each other out.

I was also at all 3 games. Went up to the first one on a football special from Watford Junction Station. The 4-4 replay at the Vic was madness. Trevor Christie was their main man. We should have won the Cup that year, but the goalkeeping injuries that befell us at the last minute. Still maintain we should have chucked in David James - but Sherwood was fit apparently.

Yes. Shame for them. Walsall had a really good footballing side and Shakespeare was a very elegant midfielder
