Starting the new season thread (with a farewell and good luck to Granada's former cousins of the Pozzo's family).

Today at 3:30PM (your time) the first international friendly for Udinese, in Austria, against FC Krasnodar.

    Web live streaming on http://udinese.it/portal/EN/handle/?hil&page=homepage&language=inglese

Krasnodar: I never heard before but the club was born in 2008, reached first division after two years and high positions and twice qualification to EL in last two seasons.
A very quick rising, I guess the owner is one of the usual Russian oil tychoons or similar.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC_Krasnodar
    http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fk-krasnodar/startseite/verein/16704

A decently strong team it seems, also ahead in preparation as they are at their 6th friendly already http://fckrasnodar.ru/en/team/news/object/?object_id=126538

    P.S.:
    By the way:
I have had the pleasure of being able to watch, for years now, almost all Udinese's friendly matches and those of the Primavera team for free, on air or by web, on Udinese Channel.
Now that you are a rich and powerful Premier League club, what are you waiting for to set up your own "WFC Channel"? ;)
I guess Pozzo might simply hire "en masse" the guys of WDSports and give them a recording study, some cameras and hire also a couple of good-looking presenters.

I'd love to see Udinese pick up a bit this coming season. They've slowly declined for the last few seasons whilst we've improved, do you think they have a realistic chance of top 8-10?

If Zielinski stays (unlikely) they might be able to achieve a small climb up the table (along with Penaranda). Sherlock has the new manager decided on a tactical system yet?

Something like this would work wonders I feel. Not sure who would take the right wing spot though...Fernandes? Edenilson?

It's difficult to predict. Many players changed.
Iachini in the two friendlies sticked to the "old" 3-5-2 of last seasons and tried first the complete "old team" and then a completely "new team".
Probably in order to see most of the players play in their usual formation and evaluate them.

But more and more, with the transfer market going on, it seems possible that (finally) after 6 seasons we might abandon 3-5-2 to move to ... who knows? Maybe 3-4-1-2, 3-4-3, 3-4-2-1 ... or maybe 4 in defence (unlikely, most of our defenders seem more well suited to 3 in defence).

The main point is that 3-5-2 requires very good players (and good subs) in the RWB-LWB positions. We are lacking that.
On the contrary we have an abundance of AM, wingers, strikers, secondary strikers.

What software do you use to create that picture? Seems useful. As soon as I have more info (after a few more friendlies) I might try it to show our possible formation.

P.S.: anyway Kuzmanovic and Iturra are both "past". Kuz, we didn't use the option to buy after the loan. Iturra was released.

Ah, didn't realisee Kuz and Iturra had gone! The team does suit 3-5-2 well, but I thought with Penaranda (aka the pozzos biggest asset atm), they might make a change to fit him in (presumably he'll be playing up front rather than as a wing-back?). How have you rated Adnan and Edenilson? I watched Edenilson a few times for Genoa and was very impressed.

    The website is lineupbuilder.com

Adnan is promising but still raw. Edenilson was very good at Genoa but didn't impress last season (not a shock, in a whole disappointing team it's difficult to shine) and neither in the friendlies so far.
The attacking line will depend a lot from the chosen formation. Penaranda is a good asset but not the only one.
I'll open a thread to keep informed any interested on transfer movements, as soon as they quiet down a little because our new Sporting Director Bonato (the old one was Giaretta) is very very active at the moment in getting rid of deadwood and buying interesting players (Rodrigo De Paul, from Valencia, the last one).
Thanks for the link, I'll certainly try it.

    A very important anniversary today.

July 28th 1986 Giampaolo Pozzo bought Udinese from former owner Lamberto Mazza.

    30 years in football!

In his first season 86/87, Udinese was relegated from serie A, due to a penalization of 9 points for irregularities of previous owner (without penalization they would have reached safety).
In the following years some yo-yo between first and second division until in 94/95 we reached our last promotion.

    Since then:
    - 22 consecutive seasons in serie A (counting the oncoming 2016/17).
    - 2 times each we arrived 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th in serie A. Thrice 7th.
    - 11 times qualified to European cups (record for "provincial" teams).
Three very good decades, I'd say.

The last Summer's friendly begins in 10 minutes and is a very interesting Udinese-Middlesborough at Udine's Stadio Friuli (Dacia Arena).
Live on Udinese channel and also on a link from the Boro website, easy to find if you're interested.

There are several good ones. I was waiting for the end of the transfer window for a good complete summary of all movements with comments.
One to watch tonight is Rodrigo De Paul.
He was in our radar two years ago but went to Valencia, were he didn't play much.
Came for 3M€ now and he seems hungry of regaining the two wasted years and very good with the ball.
He had the "balls" of choosing for his shirt number the "magical" #10 that was of Zico and Di Natale in the past. He certainly aims high and has no fear. Hopefully he can do it.

Heavy and undeserved punishment. 4-0 for Roma.
We held very well until they scored at 70' with a pen (soft and with an offside, IMHO), then we collapsed.

yep thats very intertesting , wondering how that might affect us in the long term , we are obviously Pozzo main interest now, but in the future will we have links to red bull as well , global brand that could push us on even further or is their wealth thinned out between to many sporting clubs?

Whilst it's not an extreme sport, it's one of the most followed sports in the world so it's easy to see why they do it. They also buy young attacking/flair players to relate that image to the rest of the brand.

They have already bought Leipzig and owned Salzburg. The former being the club that Oliver Burke signed for and scored against Dortmund yesterday. And they have money to spend. RB Leipzig are hated by almost every other team.

I can't seriously see Red Bull buying Udinese. It doesn't fit their business model, as I believe Red Bull have traditionally bought clubs when they have been far lower down in the footballing pyramid (Leipzig and Salzburg being prime examples). Obviously, with the rather small fan base they must have had then, changing the clubs' colours, logo, kit, identity etc would have been quite easy. Udinese however are in Serie A, the top division of Italian football. I simply don't see Red Bull having the audacity to come in and enact all these changes when they'd be under the Serie A spotlight. If RB want an Italian club, I think it's far more likely that they'll invest in one that's far lower down the pyramid, as they have done in the past.

It makes sense, relatively close to Salzburg, large catchment area (no teams near Udine other than Udinese), new stadium etc. Udinese also doesn't have a large fan base (average crowd of 13k this season). It'll be unlike their model so far, but the club fits so they could easily change it up.

    Good win for Udinese.
Could have easily been a 0-0, in a torrid humid afternoon where both teams in SH were walking, tired and sweating.
But we found a little bit of more willing it and Perica is perfect for that: he often enters as a sub and always gives 110% and often scores.

After the horrible debut Vs Roma, two victories both with clean sheet.
We smell again the nice smell of the left side of the table! Long may it continue!!!

20' from now the KO of Udinese-Chievo.
It's two years since our last three-wins-in-a-row.
It would be nice to gain the 3 points but it won't be easy.
Chievo is a hard nut to crack, they'll stay covered and wait for chance of counterattack, which is what WE usually do.
Fall has finally arrived and the match will be played under heavy rain.
